Opel Blitz 2,5-32, ICM, 1/35

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

With my Grizzly finished I decided to move to next project. This time I wanted to change something in my way of building models. Up to this point my modelling was pretty straight forward. Bulding, painting, filters, washes, oils, chippings, streakings, pigments. In the end I had a nice looking model, but it is not what I desire. I wanna do a little bit of storytelling with my work. I wanna build a vehicle (scaled) that has been somewhere. I also want to be more aware of what I'm doing and how that affects the whole project. That said, I wanna break down my weathering to smaller sections rather than do it on a whole model. That way I'll see the difference and possibly understand the WHY of using some method.

Also, with every new model I want to try something new or do something old differently. The main topic of this project will be: WOOD. Painting and weathering wooden structures. To do this, I chose ICM's Opel Blitz type 2,5-32. Here's some pictures.

The boxart. First of all, I'm not gonna use shelter as my Opel will be a little bit post-war.

Opel%20Blitz-2_zpstjx3iiju.jpg

Opel%20Blitz-3_zps9yryddpq.jpg

That's what's inside the box. Not too many parts and rubber tyres. There will be some additions. Let's get to work.

Opel%20Blitz-4_zpsxskth5ca.jpg

The plastic is rather soft, so work goes nicely. There are a lot of small or thin parts though, so pay extra attention to cutting it.

Opel%20Blitz-5_zpsxy1maztf.jpg

Chassis is quite detailed.

Opel%20Blitz-6_zps7hjlvqpm.jpg

I also started with interior. I broke down building stage to four stages and I do the separatly: engine, chassis, shelter's floor and cabin.

Opel%20Blitz-7_zps1ar6spr4.jpg

Engine is quite hard to build as it consists of 21 parts.

Opel%20Blitz-9_zpshckugu1u.jpg

Interior is the first thing that's gonna see paint. First: the primer.

Opel%20Blitz-10_zpsfiuv9e3j.jpg

Door with details. Pretty neat.

Opel%20Blitz-11_zpsotsor6mf.jpg

Opel%20Blitz-12_zpsp6rqsnbu.jpg

Floor. Interior is quite simple.

Opel%20Blitz-13_zpsdkzepfad.jpg

The seat needed to be roughened up a bit in my opinion, so I did some folded tarps. That's paper towels soaked in PVA glue and water mixture.

Opel%20Blitz-14_zpsiaxgr5c3.jpg

First layer of paint: steel.

Opel%20Blitz-17_zpsh1po44sf.jpg

After that I put some chipping fluid on which was followed by some dark grey colour. Next stage was chipping with a brush dipped in water.

Opel%20Blitz-16_zpsf3dlt0hu.jpg

The same happened with the door.

OK, that will be it for now.

Thanks for watching.

Hi folks.

Here's a little progress on a subject:

Opel%20Blitz-18_zpshx30o0pw.jpg

The engine consists of 21 parts I think. Real pain in butt. Especially when it is not going to be visible.

Opel%20Blitz-20_zpswd1eg0hx.jpg

I got tempted to maybe open it, so it will be seeable. Still thinking about it.

Opel%20Blitz-21_zpsljy5itmw.jpg

It really takes some patience to build it, so if you wanna build the truck closed, you may skip most of the build, leaving just main parts visible from underneath.

Opel%20Blitz-22_zpsaybszipq.jpg

And that's where it will seat.

Opel%20Blitz-23_zpspatarkxg.jpg

And some more details.

Opel%20Blitz-24_zpsis9ysbku.jpg

The frame. Well, most of it.

Opel%20Blitz-25_zps2teiypvt.jpg

So far, the build is pretty much flawless.

Opel%20Blitz-26_zpscfc269nk.jpg

Tested the fitting.

Opel%20Blitz-28_zpsclxwbcc8.jpg

And putting the primer on. Tamiya's primer.

Opel%20Blitz-29_zps03ciarpy.jpg

Opel%20Blitz-30_zpsgu4zu17c.jpg

Also, some more scratches inside of the truck...

Opel%20Blitz-31_zpsoqvlrlvp.jpg

I want to make an impression of an old truck.

Opel%20Blitz-32_zpsala5ewt5.jpg

That is it for now. Soon more progress...

Thanks for watching.

Back with some more progress...

Opel%20Blitz-34%20copy_zps0jfpbnei.jpg

I decided to weather the parts surrounding the engine.

Opel%20Blitz-33%20copy_zpssthitcql.jpg

Why I did that? Someone might ask. The answer is simple.

Opel%20Blitz-35%20copy_zpsuodgwilv.jpg

Training purposes. If I screw up something, I'd rather have it here, where it will not be visible than on some other, more 'open' project. So - it's just training.

Opel%20Blitz-36%20copy_zpszovstidu.jpg

Never ignore an oportunity to train.

Opel%20Blitz-37%20copy_zpsqv0xsyfz.jpg

I also continued work on interior with some pigments and drybrushing.

Opel%20Blitz-38%20copy_zpsp1svuyzb.jpg

I like the effect, I'll try some more of that in future.

Opel%20Blitz-39%20copy_zpscajm5kd0.jpg

And that's the engine. Painted and weathered.

Opel%20Blitz-40%20copy_zpsfyjgixxj.jpg

Tested fiting. It's not bad.

Opel%20Blitz-41%20copy_zps2dp6j0pt.jpg

Everything goes well up to this point.

Opel%20Blitz-43%20copy_zpsmrey5gnw.jpg

As I've mentioned in the 'introduction', wood will be main poin of focus. That's balsa wood cut to replicate the floor on a back of the truck.

Opel%20Blitz-44%20copy_zpswrcxwhxn.jpg

And that's the back of the truck itself with some filler filling the gaps.

Opel%20Blitz-45%20copy_zpsoarnz7dl.jpg

Put some primer underneath.

That's it for now. The work will intensify now, so stay tuned...

Thanks for watching.

Ok, looks like I have some final shape of the project. Look for yourself.

Opel%20Blitz-46%20copy_zpsryaprquf.jpg

The cabin is closed and windows were masked with a tape.

Opel%20Blitz-47%20copy_zpsreexnbzz.jpg

The fitting is not bab, but it's not Tamiya, so I recommend staying focused.

Opel%20Blitz-49%20copy_zpsqzlhkofi.jpg

Also I glued the balsa floor.

Opel%20Blitz-50%20copy_zpsfcnu7pvk.jpg

Finally, the load. That's some furniture.

Opel%20Blitz-51%20copy_zpsybmsbryt.jpg

They come from MiniArt's Furniture Set

Opel%20Blitz-52%20copy_zpsre6qobm4.jpg

Still need some side fencing.

Opel%20Blitz-53%20copy_zpsbvtonoi9.jpg

I'm gonna put the truck on this cobblestone street.

Opel%20Blitz-54%20copy_zps0xttgjgq.jpg

Finally have the final shape.

Opel%20Blitz-55%20copy_zps5whkyizg.jpg

And the primer's on.

Opel%20Blitz-56%20copy_zps113adnwg.jpg

I really like that.

Opel%20Blitz-58%20copy_zpshfdzy998.jpg

Hope that you do too.

Time for paint.

Thanks for watching.

one question, you use some particular product for those oily stains?

Yes. AK's fuel stains and Mig's Fresg Engine Oil. They were speckled on or put directly on the pigments, so there;s that sooty texture,

Hiya

Looks like paint job is done.

Opel%20Blitz-60%20copy_zpsfd8iyly1.jpg

First, a layer of red primer paint. That was followed by rather handsome portion of hairspray.

Opel%20Blitz-61%20copy_zpsi88i8tfb.jpg

Afther that, I put Panzer Gray which was chipped. A lot.

Opel%20Blitz-62%20copy_zpshurkzz8m.jpg

I want to have lots of layers.

Opel%20Blitz-63%20copy_zpsehmfrygh.jpg

Next layer was a Dark Yellow. Of, course, I put hairspray before that.

Opel%20Blitz-64%20copy_zpstwhcbymd.jpg

Next: some more chipping. Looks good for me.

Opel%20Blitz-65%20copy_zpsmgiyjpkd.jpg

The final layer: white.

Opel%20Blitz-66%20copy_zpstcd2wedh.jpg

I want to make impression, that truck was painted white after the war.

Opel%20Blitz-67%20copy_zpsd72rkhhh.jpg

Due to lots of use it nearly wore off.

Opel%20Blitz-68%20copy_zpsgdfdfmlq.jpg

That's how it looks now. Hope you like it...

Thanks for watching.

Hiya. Some weathering done. A I've mentioned in the begining, I'll try and change the ways of my weathering. I want to break the process to the smaller sections and do the weathering of particular section in one seating. All the filters, washes, streaks etc. This should help me pay attention to details and focus on smaller things which make the difference. We'll see what happens.

Opel%20Blitz-69%20copy_zps6xqff8gw.jpg

First, it was driver's door.

Opel%20Blitz-70%20copy_zpsmv3gsh1o.jpg

That's AK's filter and wash. After that i just used oil paints. Some brown colours mixed with white or black, then some white streaks and speckles.

Opel%20Blitz-71%20copy_zpsc5rtelah.jpg

I did the same with side engine cover. To make it moore sooty I used more Black.

Opel%20Blitz-72%20copy_zpsiycvdajd.jpg

Then, the upper cover. Lors of white speckles here.

Opel%20Blitz-73%20copy_zps5c6byhbm.jpg

Then I moved to the back. Done the wash, because I have different plans for it.

Opel%20Blitz-74%20copy_zpszlnt7abw.jpg

Also started painting the wood. That's Old Wood from AK with something like ten thousand different oil washes :)

Opel%20Blitz-76%20copy_zpsbwgm1env.jpg

Then I moved to passenger's door. I wanted it to be different so I dedided to make the white dominate in this area.

Opel%20Blitz-77%20copy_zpsdz6vzlww.jpg

After that I did the front...

Opel%20Blitz-79%20copy_zpsqbfipygi.jpg

...and the fenders.

Opel%20Blitz-80%20copy_zpsn1rcotyk.jpg

Don't forget about the roof... Lotsa speckles here...

Opel%20Blitz-81%20copy_zpsz4i9icog.jpg

The back... ugh... I wanted to paint it enamel black on a hairspray coat... That didn't go well at all... Lucky that it won't be visible too much.

Opel%20Blitz-82%20copy_zps8czfpqka.jpg

Put it together... Looks good.

Opel%20Blitz-83%20copy_zps2stlorpt.jpg

That is it for now. The cabin is pretty much done. It's just few finishing touches. Now the focus will go to back and furniture. Stay tuned.

Thanks.

Dawid.
