Carriers Ahoy! Things that fly on things that float! chat

@trickyrich I am probably going to do the Firefly I DV119/S281 for this Group Build.  It was the Firefly in which SLt JP Stott shared in the destruction of 2xKi51s.  This action took part on 12.04.45 whilst escorting a Martin Mariner on a SAR mission.  I might save the Walrus for the Pacific build (or will I do an Implacable Seafire for that? )

I had another "fondle" of the Phantom sprue's yesterday I'm not sure I'm in the mindset to takle this kit yet with what I hope to do in other GB's

so I think a couple of small simpler build's may follow the Fulmar,a Skyhawk would be nice maybe a Corsair.

Steve, I to have been fondling Phantom sprues a lot prior to this GB. Don't forget there's an F-4 STGB next year.

Oh dear, I didn't realise that this GB was about to start. And I've not decided on the subject yet !

Should I build a Tomcat ? Not sure, as I may build one for the Grumman GB. What about a Hornet ? Hmmm, none of the units I have in mind is actually carrier based. A Super Hornet would be easier as I have nice ideas for these. But what about a Phantom ? And if a Phantom, USN or FAA? Speaking of Phantoms, I even have a kit of the first Phantom, the FH-1... again, not sure if the markings I'd like to use are for a carrier based unit. And what about that A-3B ? Now a Skywarrior would make for a very unusual subject, can't see that many being built for the GB but will it fit on my shelves? Wait, I've got another couple of quite unusual subjects, what about an interwar type like the Northrop BT or a Helldiver (the biplane, not the WW2 sort). But do I necessarily have to build US Navy ? Why not go FAA with a Scimitar or a Gannet ? I've got quite a few ideas for a nice Gannet ! And of course, a Sea Harrier is always a welcome subject. Or should I go for even less known Navies, like Russia with a Su-33 or a French Crusader ? Or should I dare with an Italian AV-8B? Decisions, decisions...

Giorgio you know what Enzo would say!!!

build them all!!!! :D

For some reason I was expecting that kind of answer

That would be really difficult, I have in the stash around 30 different potential subjects for a GB like this and some of them in multiple copies. I don't think I could build 70 models in only a few months :D

Damn, popped into LMS and for the first time in years none of the Skyhawk's he normally has were in stock,Airfix's little Zero was a land based

scheme and no sign of the four Airfix Martlet's that were there last week either it seemed the God's of modelling were trying to tell me to move up a scale

so went safe with a 1/48 Tamiya  Buffalo  simple   US Navy scheme which should lend itself to some nice weathering.

I wonder if they were bought by Britmodellers planning to enter this GB ;)

If often wondered the same thing, where there are runs on certain models or accessories when we have our GB's.

What to do, what to do!!

I finished two models in the Radial Engines Rock GB, but abandoned the one I was doing for the M3/M4 GB. Feel sure I could do at least one for this GB, these are the eligible subjects I possess, any thoughts peeps?

The MPM Sea Vixen FAW.1 as I've got the same kit and I'd like to see how she goes together ;)

Well... if time is something you feel is limited then I would go for one of the Seafires. It's a manageable number of parts and perhaps go for a scheme with as few colours as possible. Unfortunately that is why I opted for a Zero. Although if I manage to finish in a relatively short time, I may look to enter another one similarly - Wildcat, Hellcat or perhaps a Skyhawk.

I actually was thinking doing both FAW.1 and FAW.2 as they are the same kit basically with the same colours, it also happens to be amongst my favourite aircraft.

The Seafire's seem simple enough, I like the Banshee even though there is a fair bit of PE and PUR, the Sea Harrier is beckoning as well! Can't decide...... !!

Hey Rich,

Please can you count me in for this one - I'd like to enter with this:

I've never built a Japanese aircraft to date so I thought this would be a perfect chance to kill two birds with one stone for this build.

Thanks

Davey

to quote our illustrious GB leader........"build them all!!!"

The Sea Vixen's would be nice, so would the Barracuda, with the Skyknight you just need to be careful with the scheme chosen as some of the Korea war aircraft were land based for that operation.

mmm i think i may have jumped the gun with the T-2c, although it is a training ac, some of their squadrons have undertaken carrier ops/evaluation for its pilots. So to clarify would a training squadron be classed as operational on carriers and be included for this GB?

Permission to come aboard?

The last time I signed up for one of these, I rather over-reached by starting no fewer than eight Sea Kings for that type's STGB three years ago, and didn't finish any....

....I'll keep things a little more modest this time, and initially only declare my intention to build an SH-3A of HS-5 aboard the USS Essex - namely BuNo 149918 AT-55, the aircraft that carried out the recovery of the Apollo 7 crew in October 1968:

....depending on how things go, waiting for possible launch will be an SH-3H of HS-15, USS Forrestal, 1988/89, and/or a HAS.6, squadron and ship yet to be determined...

no problems welcome aboard, it' nice to see another Apollo mission aircraft. Get a thread up and go for it.

Would it be a tad late to join this GB??

Not sure what I'd bring to the party so I'm off to the loft for a look-see.

It's never to late to join, the really nice thing about a GB like this there's just so many choices! So once you find one start a thread and go for it.

If the training squadron operated of a carrier or carriers then those aircraft would be fine.

Well welcome everyone, it's now off an running with an amazing number of builds listed even before the GB started, this looks like it's going to be a big and epic GB.

So good luck to everyone who has signed up so far, I'll try to keep up with everyone's builds, I know there are some already epic ones to watch. To those still thinking about it, go for it, have a wee look in the stash or in your LHS, you never know what you me find!
