Bell UH-1, Huey, U.S.Army, South Vietnam,

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Just put the finishing touches on my `Easy Build` Hobbyboss 1/48 Huey

Rxd3CN8.jpg

Which I painted up in early US Army camouflage, inspired by a photo of a `B` model Huey of the 117th Aviation Company, based at Ban Me Thuot in the early 1960`s.....

...I found in Squadrons `US Army Aviation in Vietnam book.

It really was an easy build but some people may not like the lack of some details, for me, I just added: seat belts, cyclic stick, a bit of cabin roof detail , sanded the ends of the skids into shape.......

....added footpedals and some hydraulic lines.

I did manage to make life a bit difficult by not adding any nose weight and had to cut the nose off and add some.

Decals were some from the stash and some from the kit.

Hope you enjoy, thanks for looking

Cheers Russ

Hi Russ, I have seen a couple of your builds and the one thing that makes them stand out is the paint job and this is no exception, I love it and it is not a scheme I am familiar with, was the 117th a specialist unit? With a scheme like that it should be.

Gary

Cheers Gary, I don`t believe it was, the caption just says; camouflage scheme was applied to Vietnam Hueys in the early `60`s. I have seen a photo of similarly camo`d ones mixed in with a `Gaggle?` of Olive Drab ones.

Lovely build, and how good it is to see an alternative to the olive green standard colour schemes.

Inspires me to dig out the UH1D in 1/72 by Esci from the stash.

Regards

A lot of the Thai helos were done in this camp scheme. It was not the norm, but it was also not that unusual for older Hueys to have a cameo scheme rather than just OD.    The 117th also had some "tiger stripe"  Hueys.

Salute for a great build... Great camouflage rendition and tropical background... I don't see any "lack in details" . . It is more than complete in itself.. Thanks for sharing the inspirational camouflage rendering... Regards..

Hi Russ,

I have seen this type of camo on photos , etc. but never on a model. I dare say it looks plain fantastic!

Congrats

Hello,Russ - There's a handsome 'Huey' indeed. An intricate and interesting scheme which you've splendidly achieved and portrayed in your customary style.

Great work.

😉👍 All the very best,Paul.
