AZ Model Bf109G6/AS "Green 13" JG 1 1/72

Recommended Posts

Hello!

This will be my entry in the group build

109STGB

Ok so I was planing on building a Bf109G2 belonging to JG5 flown by Rudi Müller, but the winter camouflage with green blotches kinda scared me off. I am not that familiar with my airbrush yet and will need more practice. Therefore I chickened out and decided for this beauty instead. Overall RLM76 I can handle. Besides I build veeeeery sloooowly, so if this gonna be finished in three months I have no time to loose and an easy paint job would be the best thing.

BTW I am going on a weekend trip with my wife and two daughters tomorrow and  won't be back home again before Monday. Starting of good ehh? Hopefully a new update in the end of next week.

Good Luck to all of you! Looking forward to see your progress and models!

-Thomas

Looks like a nice kit.

I haven't built an AZ Models kit before so I will be interested to watch yours progress.

Cheers

Hi! This will be my first AZ Model 109 also, if I can finish it... I have several in the stash and have started on a couple of them.

Nice project, the boxart shows green 13, the last mount of Walter Oesau in which he was shot down ?

Thanks and you are quite right! I have read about that encounter both online and in some of my books on the 109.

So progress this first month since the starting of this group build has been slow. I have spent the time studying the instructions, the kit and my books on the Bf109 that are relevant.

Here is some of my books I am using as reference for this build.

What you get in the box is the sprues from their G6 kit with most of the small parts and upper/lower wings. The G6 fuselage have been cut off and replaced with a new fuselage and some additional small parts. Actually you get an Bf109G10 and then the instructions tells you too fill and sand smooth some hatches and replace/re-position them with the use of a decal to get an G6/AS. I guess this is a way for a model company to get the most out of their investment. But there are a few more corrections that the instructions have left out that needs to be done to get a more correct G6/AS version.

As I have understood, the G6/AS was equipped with a DB605A engine that was fitted with the supercharger from the DB603 engine. Because of the larger supercharger it got a silmilar type of cowling as the G10/K-4. But most machines still retained the smaller oil cooler (Fo870) and the smaller oil tank (38.6 ltr). Therefore the small bulges underneath on both sides of the lower front part of the cowling has to removed because they are usually synonymous with aircraft installed with the larger oil tank (54 ltr). Although it is not carved in stone, my reference says "it is quite possible that some machines also had the larger oil tank" and some even where fitted with the larger oil cooler (Fo987).

:worms:

This machine had Werknr: 20 601 and according to my reference this machine was built as a G6 and fitted with the DB605AS engine. Planes in this batch had the 30mm canon firing thru the propeller shaft/hub and where designated U4. And since Walter Oesau was the commander of JG1 I am guessing that his machine also had the Fug16Y radio set and a Morane antenna installed under the fuselage.

I. The Oil Filler Cap is in the position synonymous with the larger oil tank used in the G10, so it needs to be removed and repositioned.

II. New location for the Oil Filler Cap for machines using the smaller oil tank. I am not good with the rescriber tool, so I would use the decal that comes with the kit...

III. This bulge is got to go cause it is also synonymous with the larger oil tank.

I. This hatch must be removed... (Don't remember what it is for at the moment.)

II. And re-positioned here. Again I will use the decal that comes with the kit.

III. This bulge on the right side must be removed.

Bf109 aircraft equipped with the MK108 30mm cannon must have this hatch.

There is however some faults/errors to the parts of this kit. The cockpit tub does not fit in the fuselage. I know because I have read it here on this forum somewhere. I guess the cockpit was designed for the G-6 fuselage and something went wrong designing the the G-10 fuselage. A considerable amount of the cockpit tub and front panel needs to be sanded thinner to be able to close the fuselage parts with the cockpit tub inside.

That's my update for know. Not much actual model building done yet. I have just started on filling in hatches, removing bulges and sanding the cockpit tub. When all that is done and the cockpit fits nicely in the fuselage I will start painting the cockpit. I guess the next update will be then. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Any hints or tips is welcome.

Hi!

Here is a small update.

35775922235_20e83d6ecd_c.jpg

This is an overall view of what I have been doing. After finishing removing of some hatches on the front fuselage I have been mostly painting the cockpit and other small parts as propeller, wheels and struts etc.

Here is the cockpit. Not yet finished painting it. Also it will need a wash and some drybrushing. Same goes for the cockpit tub and instrumentpanel. I have added some strips of plastic inside the fuselage  where the exhaust should be placed. This way I can paint and weather the exhaust stack and put them in place at a later stage.

Added brake wires to the landing gear struts and painted the rear wheel. Still the struts will need some metallic or silver on the oleo's. And of course a wash and drybrush for both.

Sorry guys! I didn't make it. Even with the extended deadline I had no chance.

I would like to thank everyone in the group build for great inspiration and I would like to honor those how did finish their kits! Many fine looking models!

Also a big thanks to everyone who have shown interest in my build. I appreciate it!

So that was the bad news I guess...

The good news is that this group build, although I did not finish it, has kinda kick started my modelling building again. I have done more model building the last 3 months than almost the entire year.

I will finish this kit. When it's done I will post pictures in the regular RFI section.
