Tamiya Porsche Boxster

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

i have decided to make a replica of a Porsche Boxster I bought brand new back in 2004

It was in lapis blue and I pumped loads of extras

I found this kit on eBay for £20. So I couldn't resist 😎

The main body and bumpers are made in a bright yellow

The first mod I have had to do is the front bumper

IMG_4711

the grills on this kit are joined together vertically as you can see on the left so I have cut them out to match the grils on my car.

Finished shell with front and rear bumpers attached and all mold lines removed

Finished front bumper. All ready for prep work to be sprayed

Good morning

being a back holiday weekend I hopefully should be able to get most of the body work done in-between the other builds I am doing.

so after my first cup of tea I have cleaned and scrubbed the body work using Zeropaints Key And Clean.

This stuff is very good you can buy it in a kit with two pads and cleaning solution.

so a quick clean and leave to dry ready to be put in the booth to be primed.

As you can see this system will remove all the chemicals that they use to remove the plastic from the moulds but also it gives it a nice key for the primer to hold onto

I will let these dry for an hour or two then I will spray the primer.

I thought I would get some other parts ready also while I have some primer on the go

Hi Ian,

Love this car. I think that it and it's Cayman sibling are my favourite Porsches.

Your preparation work is meticulous. I'm sure that the primer and top coat will adhere well to that.

I shall have to take a look at the Zero Paints 'Key and Clean', as I use their primers and colour coats already.

I only wish I could afford the real thing!

Keep up the great work!

BTW. What's the other white car front?

All the best, Alan.

HI Alan

thank you for your kind words

the other car is a Porsche GT 1/12 scale

its nearly finished, I didn't think to do a build thread on this one, to be fair

this is my first build thread so far, my friend told me its a good idea to put things on hear like this so I can get advice and suggestions from people and learn new things.

and also help other people also

Ok So we are ready to start spraying

34178809002_7f09bf1796_b.jpg

For all my cars I use the Zeropaints Grey Filler Primer.

very easy to use and sprays very nice out the gun.

Just apply 2-3 coats, at around 15-40 psi, the first coat I would do a very thin dust coat as this stuff will melt your plastic.

you don't need to thin this stuff, just put it in your cup and spray it on.

Ian,

Just bought a real one that looks very similar to yours. Wondered about doing what you are doing - so will watch with interest. BTW can a RHD version be built from the kit.

Regards

Nick

So back from a spot of beekeeping and back to the bench

I have started to use these little sanding pads for small models as I find them better to use

33531956073_690d21b564_b.jpg

I start at the3200 grit and then finish with the 12000

and you should get a shiny thing like this

34211855241_ef2f587ba7_b.jpg

Now the front of the bonnet (boot) where it meets the bumper is a little shabby so I have used a scribing tool that my best bro told me about,

not a great photo but the join is much nicer, I had to rub down one part as you can see the yellow showing through so I will touch that up later, when ive got some more primer in my gun

Hi Nick

unfortunately not, well not as I know, as always Tamiya always puts the wheel on the wrong side, that said the kit is a very good kit

it has options

roof up

roof down

side window up or down

hard top

speedster option that sits on top of the folded down roof

Hi Ian,

That's been my experience with the zero primers. I also found this out with the Halford's primer paints as well. Dust on a protective coat (or two), let it harden for 15-20 minutes. Then a couple more coats after that, all quite fine.

I have found on the few occasions that I have used ZP primer, that a fine sand was normally enough. I have used Tamiya lapping film, which seems to bring up a shine like yours on the primer coat.

I think though, that I will look up those sanding pads. Did you get them from Hiro Boy?

Fabulous finish on the primer, by the way.

I found that the most difficult part I had was with the clear coat. I used the ZP 1K clear-coat. I don't trust myself with the 2K stuff. I don't have a respirator mask. I ought to get one anyway! I think that I need more practise.

I shall watch this thread with interest.

All the best, Alan.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the info. I'll have to get some.

That will have to be the next order. I just ordered a Fujimi FIAT 500 Abarth. The wife won't be too pleased if I order anything more this month! :(

All the best, Alan.

My kids are both grown up. Just paying to get them through uni...

P.S. I would have 'liked' this, but like isn't the right thing.

I hope you get to see your son.

Cheers, Alan.

Good morning all,

first call of today is putting the kettle on and then the compressor or should that have been the other way around?

My Porsche I bought in 2004 was in Lapis Blue, I looked at all the colours in the range, and I just loved this colour.

thankfully the guys as Zeropaints make this colour (HAPPY DAYS)

So there we have it guys one shiny car and a pot of Lapis Blue

First coat is just a very fine dust coat as this stuff can melt your plastic also,

the idea is very fine light coats, you are not looking for a glossy finish, as this will dry matt.

33544640763_5da79174c8_b.jpg

Second Coat, so you can see you are just building up the depth of the colour.

34197532322_8bca8ea8fd_b.jpg

34355947305_c1b38846d5_b.jpg

This is the last coat which I will leave to dry for a good few hours or might leave until to night or tomorrow to spray the clear
