RandyD
Hi Folks, New guy here and I must say that after looking around the site I'm very impressed !!!! A lot of gifted builders showing great projects. This is a build I started a couple of years ago and still have a long ways to go. Have always wanted to build a GT40 in 1/24th scale and settled on doing chassis P1076 as it looked when finishing in 3nd place at the 1969 Le Mans race. It is the 'sister' car to the famous 2 time winner of the race chassis P1075. The biggest reason for choosing this car is the reference material available on line for it. The www.racingicons.com site has a restoration of the actual car and lots of pics of other GT40s. The www.cunninghamcompetion.com site has the parts catalog on line for the Mark 1 that was sold to the general public. The www.gelscoemotorsports.com site has a build thread of a replica of this car. My biggest inspiration was following along as Dan built his gorgeous 1/8th scale Mark 1 car. His latest build that he has on this site is further motivation I like to work in metal with just your basic hand tools and fairly simple soldering equipment. I fashion my parts using files , saws and scissors. As the actual plans for the GT40 are one of the most closely guarded secrets in the world, I developed a set of working drawings using known dimensions and photos. I'm using the Fujimi kit for a body with some mods to it. A couple of ref. pics of the 'tub' My start using sheet brass in layers with some copper half rounds..... I'll post this and see if I have everything figured out here, more to follow
Codger
Randy, Welcome over here, the water's fine! I have seen your build in parts elsewhere and it's outstanding. Glad you'll post it all here; a wealth of technical material skills to learn from. I can't believe you have soldered those half rounds to the sheet; it actually looks like embossed stampings. What is the method for getting perfect edges with no sign of solder anywhere??
RandyD
This car was fitted with a 'crass over' fuel tube connecting the two fuel cells... more...
RandyD
Thanks Codger ! I'm not that neat ! Cleaned up with sandpaper and a moto tool with abrasive wheel. Shifter is next.... A mockup with the kit seats which I won't be using. The shifter will remain loose until later... Photobucket is acting up, I will post a bunch more pics when it settles down. Thanks for looking in! PROPELLER
WOW! Thanks Randy, but the 1/24 is also another thing! A bigger one...
CrazyCrank
@Randy, your metal work at this scale if absolutely "apocalyptic"...my jaws just fell right on the ground
Roy vd M.
Agree with all of the above. This is going to be fun!
parryj
Damn that looks good! Can't believe it's 1/24.
Alan R
This is simply stunning work. The size of the pieces is incredible. I con only imagine the skills you have had to learn to produce work this detailed in this scale. Is there anything of the Fujimi GT-40 that you are going to use? Cheers, Alan. shood23
Jesus Randy that is some amazing scratch building there I couldn't even think of where to start with a project like this. Shaun
RandyD
Hi Folks, Codger, Maybe just a little but no more than others here Dan, Thank you Sir !!! Crazy Crank, Appreciate the comment ! Thank you Roy, will watch your plating close as I will plate a lot of this one. Parryj, Thank you ! Hi Alan, thank you and just the body with some mods. After separating the front clip and the doors I might have to make the 'spyder' out of metal for strength. Thank you Shaun ! Hopefully the PB gods will let me post a bunch today as I try to get this caught up... Work on the engine bulkhead and seat back... Work on the door hinges... Back to front end... will post this before I screw it up, more coming.................
RandyD
This is where we are trying to get to.. The shocks are from RBMotion and they are functional.. Rather crude beginnings of the front uprights and the sway bar built up more...
RandyD
Checking the body fit.... The front clip framework just dangles off the front of the tub.... That is all for now, Thank you for looking in ! Randy
NickD
The trouble with this is that it looks within the grasp of mere mortals like me. I struggle to even cut a straight line. Utterly superb. Thanks for sharing Nick
RandyD
Hi Folks, Nick, Thank you for the kind words ! The steering rack is next. I want to be able to 'pose' the front wheels so I need the rack to function. I used shrink tubing in place of knuckle joints for this ... Added the hard lines for the brakes... Next are the spare tire hold down brackets..... I'll post this and start a new one....
RandyD
Some progress on the front uprights and building up the rotors and hats.... The rotors are pe and I filed the hats from white metal detailed with rbmotion bolts.. Nexi is the radiator. P1076 ran in '69 with a brass and cooper one in place of the usual ally one. A small oil rad was laid on top of it... ref. pic of P1076 after restoration.. That is all for now. Thanks for looking in ! Randy

Roy vd M.
Incredible stuff, have difficulty believing this is 1/24th scale... only when I see the size of the parts as compared to your fingers it becomes clear you're not joking.
Codger
There are no more superlatives in the language than have been listed by all viewers here. I will not attempt to out-do them. But I will give you a 'must-do' practical suggestion Randy. You must compile and publish a hard cover book on the project with every photo you have. So much detail will disappear when cloaked in body and paint as to cause crying fits. A book will be forever at hand for the appreciative and the small expense of self-publishing will be handsomely rewarded.

parryj
Wow! this is an incredible build - and even more so because of the 1/24 scale. Learning a lot - love the idea to use shrink wrap for the joint boots.
TheBaron
Randy hi, I'm not normally over here in the garage with all the cars but I just had to stop and say how fantastic your vehicle is looking. I can just about solder two tubes together so to see work of this quality is really quite humbling. Smashing stuff! Tony
