Fujimi Porsche 911 RSR leman 94'

Recommended Posts

This will be my newest build, fujimis Porsche 911 that raced in lemans 1994.

Those that know this kit will know it's not the most accurate in fujimis history, you will see why below. I know my last build was of a fujimi Porsche that I disliked so why would I start another fujimi kit that I know has faults? It's because I have never made a 911 and I think this looks the best from the kits available.

So on to the kit.

The box art is nice but also shows instantly when you open it what is missing/wrong.

20170418_122658_zpsnwrhu4z2

The decals are pretty nice, not sure how many of the red areas I will use and they may need a little sun to pull the yellowing out.

20170418_122813_zps1msqk4pb

The body is quite nicely made. No real flash pretty small seem lines although some in tricky places.

20170418_122732_zpsjcnpqdnn

The sunshine roof will need filling though as I am pretty sure that they wouldn't have raced lemans like this.

20170418_122738_zpsawkrd4rx

Now on to the first part that is bad. Now I would ask you take a little time and look back at the box. Now look at the wheels provided. Can you see the issue? They are completely wrong. And pretty small as well.

20170418_122747_zpsf1kilkz1

Not much of an issue though as I have a tamiya gt2 that I planned on changing the wheels on anyway so I have some spare bbs style wheels more like what they look like in the box art.

20170418_122756_zpslwajmhtg

Looks much better. More leman Porsche like.

20170419_180045_zpsyunmjshe

20170419_171601_zpshztmjbux

The only problem is they are different fittings for mounting the wheels on the car so I just cut out the central part of the fujimi wheels and glued them to the brake disk parts and the tamiya wheels fit in nicely.

20170419_180742_zps5fykjsnx

Another issue I made for myself by changing the wheels are that the tamiya ones are a lot wider so a few mods to the chassis have been needed just to get clearance and so the wheels fit in properly. Modded on the right side of picture old on the left.

20170419_180838_zps5yoggfkr

So not pictured as it would have been effectively a duplicate post the left side has had the same done to it.

A small update for this build which is moving very slowly due to no time to model much at the moment.

The brakes/modded wheel holders have all been done now with multiple mock ups just so I get the wheel track width right

20170425_123630_zps1cvaagm0

The roll cage is very simple but has no locating tags for the parts so it was mainly done by eye so if anything need changing this will be done when final assembly takes place.

20170425_123707_zpsafzxjehq

The floor pan and lower suspension parts have all been primer and are awaiting a coat of cheapy wilkos white paint.

20170425_122853_zps2mnzz61r

And the body after many..... minutes of sanding is close to having some primer put on once the filler in the sun roof panel and fuel filler cap has been sanded off.

20170425_123619_zps24x4hb4e

I hate so say it but so far I am really enjoying a slower build of a car with very few issues.

A little more has been done to this today.

The floor and suspension bits have been painted in wilkos white. It took really well which surprisedme A lot.

20170426_103718_zpsl12jagoc

For some reason the other bit look blue in the picture but they are the same white as above

20170426_103738_zpsvhhzgzxr

Suspension bits and brake disks have been painted also

20170426_103843_zpskjgqtgqm

The rear wing support piece has been glued on

20170426_155233_zpsw82wmyr7

I have had to fill the licence plate holes as these won't be on a lemans car

20170426_155249_zpsy3delyr3

I have managed to glue on all the lower suspension parts so hopefully soon I will have a rolling chassis

20170426_155314_zps7jr9tlf8

The front end was a little tricky with the offset holes

20170426_160619_zpsqwozzd5c

Brake disks have had the calipers painted

20170426_155307_zps0ogyrgiz

I have also had to cut out the rear seats as in the pictures it just shows painted metal.

20170426_155228_zpsbbzig9p9

Finally I must just say as this is the first 911 I have made I kind of get why people like the older shape of this car.

Thanks Roger.

So after all the little bits that were needed to be done the build has taken a step up in pace today.

I wanted to get the wheels on the chassis as they are bigger in diameter by 2-3 mm I needed to a) check once More for clearance B) check the ride height. I know the look like they are sticking out a lot compared to the arches but when the body is on they don't.

20170427_184642_zps6tfjrz8m

I have started filling in the hole that I cut to remove the rear seats.

20170427_184649_zpsrkgnwv9q

The body has had a coat of primer put on, mainly just to check the areas I had to fill and to see if I had missed and mould line. I love the shape of the old 911s.

20170427_191450_zpsnzxkahsu

Then mocked the chassis to the body to check for clearance of the wheels in the arches.

20170427_191744_zpsr2o3hias

The rear wing plane had to be trimmed a little as it was bowing when I forced it on

20170427_191924_zpsxpyeq3tx

And finally I wanted to check the roll cage as I have changed the main mounting point of it

20170427_192541_zpsfctew14f

And from the front and as you can see a few bends need to be made and a few areas need plastic rod added to make the correct length

So some pretty big progress on this over the last few days.

The modifications to the interior tub have been done, for a part that will be mainly hidden I couldn't see the benefit of going over the top on accuracy so it's just box sections to hide the cuts.

20170429_150025_zpswfkosxee

The dash was painted in semi gloss black. The white area to the bottom right is just paint transfer from another part and won't be seen when in place.

20170502_174804_zpsjywre0dl

And also the interior tub is painted and ready to have other parts added. For a bodge job modification it doenst look too bad

20170502_174413_zpsd7zqa8w8

One part of the interior that will be seen quite a lot is the roll cage and the box stock one left me feeling quite sad about putting it in the car as it was over sized and very scantily equipped, basically if this is correct for the standard of back then then I would have refused a seat in the car. So I am modifying that firstly to fit and secondly with better protection.

20170428_154001_zpsxf2hidra

This is how much I cut from the top bar, quite a lot for such a small scale.

20170429_170702_zpsmm9rxa5w

So then with 2 mm plastic rod I started adding more bars so it would fit snuggly to the inner body work

20170429_114756_zps7ppu1glm

I think at this next stage I was almost happy with it.

20170429_145726_zpsjx2qox0v

So then a couple more bits later, a coat of primer and a coat of gloss white paint and I'm calling the cage done.

20170502_174325_zpsuieehu6o

The body has has a 1st coat of white primer. 1 maybe 2 more to do depending on coverage.

20170502_174244_zpse6mcqaly

The rear

20170502_174256_zpsigqsau0p

And finally I may be adding the secondary front lights as I found build on another site where a guy used old bombs from plane kits to make them. So I have a few old parts from when me and my eldest made a red arrow kit.

20170429_145908_zps5rtbtnle

And what do you know the rounded end looks pretty similar to the rear section of the lights on the kit box and other reference material.

20170429_150012_zps78hqj2ar

That's it for now

Thank you Mr borez it's most probably no where near what a 94' spec cage looked like but you no how it is when you start adding a couple of bits, it just keeps turning into more and more.

A very small update for this thread today.

Right so not much has been done recently as I have hit i kind of wall on what I can do due to how i started with the floor first so I'm now being slowed down by waiting for the body and wing parts to dry from priming.

So I made a proper start at trying to get the secondary lights looking more like lights than missiles. Luckily I had some clear parts from the 917 so they will be used for this.

20170505_144443_zpskd0avmdq

Pretty close to the box art (and also the other reference I have)

An update on where this build is.

Not much has changed really the floor pan and interior parts are still just sat waiting for the body to be done. Also I did notice a few bumps and spot in the last primer layer that needed sorting but when I sanded them down i couldn't find what was causing them and the wing had similar parts so I think the primer was a little old or has very little pressure in the can so after a rub down I used a new can of tamiya primer and it's now finally ready for some zero Porsche white.

Looks lovely.

I always have a problem spraying white as I'm working under artificial light up in my loft studio, when I was spraying my 956 what looked like it hadn't been coated properly because of the shading had actually been coated. It's difficult to see so I had to be really careful not to overspray.

Yours looks great though.

Thank you borez. I'm the same I don't really like painting white but it's hard to avoid it as some of my favourite race cars are white. Its the same with black also, for me black is one of the hardest colours to get anywhere near good hence why I have no 70s-80s lotus f1 cars.

I've never actually sprayed a black model yet. I'm sure that one for the future though.

I've only done 1 properly black car and don't like the finish after stripping it 2-3 times and redoing it.

So the car.

I haven't shown this build the love it deserves recently as I have been trying to mix the correct colour of paint to match the decals on the side of the car, it's always been too yellow or too red, so today I have an epiphany and came to the realisation that no matter how close I get the paint for the orange/red the kit decals will inevitably miss parts where they should be and I'm then back at square 1. So I have mixed up the closest ratio I got again and masked the car off so that all the red/orange areas are covered and I will not use the kit decals at all for this bit.

So this is after masking and the first coat or 2 of my ghetto mixed paint.

20170518_163644_zpsshtngtyh

And the rear. The paint isn't fully cured yet so is a little shiny still.

20170518_163654_zps2yaj8s00

And masking tape removed mainly. There are a few small areas that need very light sanding to sharpen the line, as I expected really when you cut it from a stencil made in a sandwich bag with tape put on it. Also the front bumper I am not to worried about the line as it needs the black trim line to be painted after clear coating.

20170518_194700_zpsz0ut1vo7

And the rear again

Thanks flipper.

The build:

Again not much has been done recently as I've not got much get up and go for models recently.

This was the body before a light polish just to get a nice flat surface for decals. I guess the humidity wasn't great when I sprayed the clear as it really didn't take well (even though it's only 2 light coats)

20170522_125449_zpsj32eetye

So now compare the picture above to the roof now and there is still 3 grades of micro mesh to go but I happy with the shine for decals now and will maybe only shine up a little after decals have been sealed with the last layer of clear.

After what feels like a really long time finally I can update this thread a little.

I started on the decals for the main body and finally I found something with this car that I don't like. The decals are oversized slightly my best guess is the decals look about 1/22 on a 1/24 car. Bit on the bright side they go down very nicely and the carrier film is very thin compared with other makers and the edges have a curved radius unlike many that have an obvious step.

20170531_150117_zps9wtvku47

This is about 20 decals in and I'm a third of the way finished.

20170531_174033_zpse5aj008v

20170531_174042_zpslajtslzx

I have to say I'm really glad I painted the red areas now instead of using the decals.
