Nice work Stix they look great.

I really like the sag on the tracks for the KV very realistic.

Hi Craig and thank you. I cannot take any credit for the track sag - that's all down to Tamiya.

Thank you Stix for explaining your steps how you do your weathering - looks like a recipe for success.

Now with all the hulls done, I am sure you look forward to do the fun bits next!

Cheers, Peter

Hi Peter and thank you. It is always nice to get the wheels and track sorted and I have started some work on the upper hulls this morning.

Glynn

Hi Glynn and thank you - but as I mentioned above; Tamiya get all the credit for the track on the KV-1 - they have engineered it really well.

This morning I managed to get some work done on the hulls for the T-34 and SU122.

Exhaust shrouds, rear hull plate and side engine vents fitted on both:

35048014465_1f73e34a10_c.jpg

Drivers hatch for the T-34 assembled and fitted in place:

34916172631_1661bc57e3_c.jpg

I also made up the T-34 external fuel tanks and started to look at the forward machine gun. On close inspection I realised the end of the gun barrel was rounded:

34916173921_e043f48ff8_c.jpg

.....so I filed it flat.

Still not happy with it I decided to drill out the end with a micro drill:

35048016295_2e0f40ac4f_c.jpg

It looked better - here it is with the external fuel tanks:

35048014975_dfd84f6d11_c.jpg

My only problem with it now was that it looked slightly tapered so I decided to replace it with some .5mm metal tube:

34240466183_b46dc8bd9b_c.jpg

34240465663_08d0ed8a0a_c.jpg

I think I'm happier with that.

The next issue I decided to fix was the open sponsons - why Tamiya make these kits with these large gaps is beyond me. I used some plasticard and I also filled in the spare holes and ejector pin marks:

34663203790_8c8c5dabf7_c.jpg

Next up I started to damage the front and rear mudguards with some pliers before trying a test fit of the upper hulls:

34663202330_061ef1905f_c.jpg

I still need to add more damage in places before painting the undersides of the sponsons.

More tomorrow.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Stix

Glynn

Hi Glynn and thank you.

I did do more on this project yesterday but didn't have time to post any details. The first thing I decided to do was get the hull of the KV-1 up to a similar level of completion as the other two. When I build armour I try to get stuff attached to the hulls and turrets that won't interfere with the main painting process and initial weathering but that will be difficult to attach later without spoiling the paint layer.

First job was to attach the angled support struts that run down the sides. When I came to look at these I realised that the backs all have two ejector pin marks in them:

35086961605_281082089a_c.jpg

So out came the filler and, while it was out, I decided to fill all the holes on the undersides of the sponsons that I felt could be more visible:

34276705373_2f65a6965f_c.jpg

At least Tamiya didn't leave a large gaps to fill between the hull and the sponsons!

Once the brackets were all attached I got all the upper hulls screwed to the lower hulls:

34922869132_62df228900_c.jpg

Then I started adding some of the parts to each of the hulls. On the T-34 it was things like the forward machine gun, the various grab rails and the engine cover:

35086960535_66a760a1e6_c.jpg

34276705033_af04e03f2c_c.jpg

On the SU122 it was the mount for the main gun and various hatches and covers:

35086963075_f573a699d7_c.jpg

34922869952_b53eb9bf23_c.jpg

Plus I made up the main gun unit:

34276703383_8db8f2607f_c.jpg

Before adding the grab rails:

34721690250_c23b95c302_c.jpg

On the KV-1 I got the engine deck fitted:

34977749881_4bcb97cf2c_c.jpg

And added a few more touches to the T-34:

34977747981_d21c46c462_c.jpg

You can also probably see the damage I have done to some of the fenders, etc. All three hulls are now just about ready for painting. I'm going to get the two turrets assembled first so I can do them all at the same time.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hi Stix,

Nice progress on your Russian tanks. I like the damage to the lightly armoured parts. Are these all going to be uniform green or will there be winter whitewash on any??

Looking good :yes::yes:

Cheers

Very nice work Stix.

I like the damaged fenders, adds a touch of realistic used look to the models.

There were a lot of ejector marks to fill weren't there, if that had been done by other manufacturers rather than Tamiya there would have been no end of complaining by some people!

Hi Greg and thank for your kind comments. With regards winter whitewash - I'm kind of tempted to try some on at least one, possibly the SU122, but we'll see. I've never done any before and it's going to have to be done with brushes so I might have a practice on some scrap first.

Hi Craig and thank you. Yes I was surprised by the amount of ejector marks on these and you are probably correct! ;)

Great progress Stix. Roll on the day when they can produce kits without all those ejection marks ;)

Thank you Nigel and I totally agree! It must be possible soon as some kits manage to avoid them in similar locations.

I have done some work during the evenings on the T-34's turret - I will post some photos when I get chance.

Kind regards,

Hi Peter and thank you - to be fair it a fairly quick win with a pair of pliers! :fight:;)

If you're going to put some whitewash on, it would probably look more authentic applied with a brush as it probably would have been done just that way in the field wouldn't it?

Cheers

John

Hi John - that is a very good point. I think I may risk it!

Thank you very much Glynn. Yes the filling process was a bit tedious at times...... ah well......

One quick update photo to show I have been doing a bit this week in the evenings on the T-34's turret:

I got a bit done today - mostly building up the turret for the KV-1 and preparing other parts and sub-assemblies ready for painting. The KV-1 turret in place:

35172761666_2631cb067c_c.jpg

....and the turret in place on the T-34:

I'm hoping to get some paint on these and the other parts tomorrow.

Final update of the weekend. Yesterday I managed to get all the green areas painted on all three kits - all painted with thinned (with water) Humbrol 102 applied by a medium flat brush

All the SU122 parts before:

35193771046_77e307c441_c.jpg

....and the bits that needed painting green after:

34389817204_2a5888397a_c.jpg

All the T-34 parts before:

34389816984_e562bf7d6e_c.jpg

....and the bits that needed painting green after:

34846975190_966e7fa621_c.jpg

Finally all the KV-1 parts before:

34389816614_4fdedfd356_c.jpg

....and the bits that needed painting green after:

34846974510_e015f9f6e9_c.jpg

A couple of photos of them all together:

34389816184_74b5849bf8_c.jpg

34846973800_6325301c5b_c.jpg

The barrels on the T-34 and SU122 are only temporarily held on with BluTack. I will attach them permanently once the painting and weathering is complete. Next up I need to add the decals before starting the various washes and dry-brushing.

Glynn

Hi Glynn and thank you. Yes the KV-1 was a bit of a brute next to the other two!

Didn't get as much done today as I'd hoped. Mostly worked on the SU122 - first getting a very thinned Revell Gunship Grey wash all over the green areas, then a targeted wash of Revell's Anthracite around and in all the detail before finishing with a dry-brushing of a lightened version of Humbrol's 102 with a touch of Revell's matt yellow added:

34548197173_bb39f57ab6_c.jpg

.......and with some of the other parts:

Hopefully I'll get some more done on the others tomorrow.

The washes are most effective,,really nice painting and weathering,

Glynn

Thank you Glynn. The use of washes and dry-brushing came about from my reading how other people on Britmodeller achieve the results they do. BM is a really great source of information and ideas.

Looking good there Stix, the dry-brushing pulls out the bulk of the SU122.  I'll be intrigued to see the KV-1 beside it.

Thank you very much Robert. I've got the KV-1 to a similar stage so I have the two next to each other in the last of the photos below.

This morning I was able to get the T-34 and KV-1 washed and dry-brushed like the SU122 - T-34 first:

T-34 alongside the SU122:

Next the KV-1:

I'm hoping to get some more work done on these this afternoon.

I was sure I posted a comment on Wednesday, but couldn't see it and when I started this post, it popped up again - I forgot to hit the "Submit Reply" button :wall:

Anyway, since the pictures of your production line you nearly completed them :yikes: Your washes did bring all the small details alive and made the monotone colour scheme much more interesting. They will look stunning after the weathering is in place.

Cheers, Peter
