Dave_R
Hi All, I'm going to be building a variation of the well known Eduard MiG-21. I like the camo colours of this one, matching the colours could be tricky. At the moment I'm going to use Humbrol 166 Lt Aircraft Grey, 226 Interior Green and I'm probably going have to mix the blue. Basilisk
Welcome aboard Dave. Looks like the MiG-21 will be a popular build. The Cuban MiG certainly looks different with its camouflage. Cheers, Peter
Jb65rams
Nice choice. Planning to do this kit as well.
fewr9fkr9595
Yeah another one for me to do one day if I live long enough. Love it. Got the paints for it too, speaking of which - PM sent.
Dave_R
Hi All, Here's the sprue shots. ....phew that's a lot of sprues! But as usual with Eduard a lot of these parts won't be used. Lovely surface detail - but the canopy is a bit thick and has quite bad flow marks in it - oh well. Dave.
Dave_R
Hi all, I've made a small start...... .... an ejection seat. Looking at the photo I can see a few things that need fixing - the camera lens is better than my eyes these days. It looks as though it'll go together easily, hopefully I'll make more progress tomorrow. Dave. Edited May 1, 2017 by Dave_R
modelling minion
And a very nice start it is too Dave! Great job on the seat, are they fabric seatbelts you have used?

Basilisk
Great looking bang seat Dave. Yes pictures of small parts can be brutal - but you have to keep in mind that the seat on the picture is something like 10 - 20 times larger than the actual seat in your model But it is a good way to check the parts as imperfection show up really well. Great job on the seat, are they fabric seatbelts you have used? They're the PE belts that come in the box. But the fabric effect on them is good. 12 hours ago, Hewy said: Dave the camera is better than most of our eyes in this gb i bet ,but still, very well applied etch ,what glue do you use ,thin cyano The glue is just regular Locktite from a well known supermarket. I'm getting a bit more experienced with the PE by now, it's fiddly but I find that bending the belts into the right sort of shape before gluing helps a lot. Dave_R
Hi all, Thanks for the positive comments, but the credit really goes to Eduard for a well produced kit. Today I got the rest of cockpit together and the fuselage halves joined. The infamous turquoise colour is a mix of Citadel paints mostly "Sotek Green" -which is definitely blue and "Moot Green" which is a kind of green I can't really describe... unripe lime perhaps. It's another world in those Games Workshop shops - but it's hard to believe how few proper Model Shops there are in London these days, high rents I expect. My experience of using Citadel paints for the first time is don't thin them with IPA - it turned to sludge and that they do self-level surprisingly well. Oh yes, and the Instrument Panel on this particular MiG really is black - it's in the Museo Del Aire, Havana, looking quite sad. Dave. Jb65rams
Great start. Will be following with interest as I am building the same subject. The etch looks great.
Dave_R
Hi JB, Yeah, I saw you were doing the "Weekend Edition" - I can only assume Czech weekends are a lot longer than British ones. I do sometimes wonder why I bother with the PE though. I'm going to close the cockpit, as I prefer the more streamlined shape - but then you can hardly see the cockpit anyway . For what it's worth I found a lot variations of colour finishes on MiG-21s, But my best guess/match for the wheel wells for this MiG is close to RLM02. Personally I don't really trust the way 111 appears in the Museo Del Aire, Havana - it looks like dodgy restoration. I never trust a museum piece unless I can it check against in service photos. Dave_R
This one of the better photo references I've found - but look how different the blue is on the MiG-23 - I think the paint was from the Havana equivalent of B&Q. No stencils at all - bonus! or this one... ...pays yer money take yer choice I suppose. Dave. Edited May 2, 2017 by Dave_R

Dave. Lots of truth here in regards to the cockpit and museum examples. But your pit does look nice. Cheers, Peter
Dave_R
Hi all, I've got all big bits together now... The fit is very good and it only needs a little filler, but the airbrake recesses need cutting-out which is a real pain in the posterior. Dave_R
Hi All. Here's the last couple of shots of the cockpit before I close it up. Just little more clean-up to do and then onto the paint stage. Dave.
Dave_R
Hi All For the last few weeks I've mostly working on the Jaguar for the NATO/Warpac GB. But this hasn't been forgotten and now work is resumed. So, all it's filled, sanded, masked ready for primer. Dave.

zebra
Very nice. The Eduard MiG-21s are lovely kits - I've built two so far, I think I need more. Dave_R
Hi All, Got the primer on. I'm trying out a new primer - Citadel Chaos Black. It went on really well, if it takes the paint nicely I'll stick with it in the future. Looks good matt black - it almost seems a shame to paint it.
