1/700 HMS Barham 1937, HMS Valiant 1945,HMS Queen Elizabeth 1918

Recommended Posts

We all know the sad history of HMS Barham and the film of her end.So went back to happy times and the model that Trumpeter produce of Barham 1941 is very close to 1937 version.Only have to take off the two 0.5 inch machine guns on B turret, add neutral stripes and the High angle control system without any radar on the fighting top.I also have HMS Valiant as 1945 Pacific colours and HMS Queen Elizabeth as 1918 waiting next on the slip way after Barham.

A bit more on the two models that Trumpeter produce of Valiant and  Queen Elizabeth.I have plans for both and the only difference is the after  superstructure  and change to the painting instructions.I will have to change were the aircraft were launched midships, this was changed and is similarly to what HMS Renown had and paint scheme she had.I will have to add tubs for the 20mm oerlikon which I do have the plans for. Biggest problem is the complete lack of photo,s of both ships in 1945.Even my three ref books say this. The only colour pictures I have are stills from a film that was taken in 1945 when the fleet were sailing passed the America fleet and were returning home.

And to finish off ,the complete details of what you get with the P.E. set. probably one of the best sets.

:hypnotised: Exceptional rigging! Steady hand and good eyesight there.

Probably explains why I can't rig to save me life!

Great work!

I'm enjoying these. I'd love to build Barham in my 1/2" paint brush scale.

In the mean time, I'll just enlarge your photos and admire!

I forgot to tell you that I really liked G3 this weekend. I assume it was yours - I can't imagine who else's it could have been and the water looked like Hewitt water!

That's the rigging finished,on to the aircraft,a swordfish with floats, the model comes with another Walrus. There is no model of a swordfish with floats ,so stole one from Hermes and floats (Japanese) from the spares box.

Very nice. What have you used to represent the water?

I use thin cardboard ,cut the shape of the hull out ,paint  ,my most poplar colour is humbrol 86 ,the colour for Barham is 230,just trying a different shade for once.

The pictures are from a different ship, but use the same system for all my ships. My thoughts are,the ship is what is being displayed ,so my water is very low key, mainly because I tried to do what other folk have done and it comes out all wrong.

Let the paint dry, then cover with a very very thin layer of wood glue,I use Evo-Stik Wood Adhesive,,this must be allow to dry for at least 24hrs,because is will dry clear, then apply another coat of glue, again allow to dry, this is what gives the sea some depth, gently dry brush the sea white and again allow to dry,fit ship with super glue and fill any gaps with wood glue, this will hold any plastic kit.For resin kits I predrilled holes and they are screwed in.Then gloss vanish with brush, allow to dry again.Hope that makes sense.

Bit of over kill on the dry brushing.
