"Oooh Matron" It's a P-38 Lightning with a saucy paint job in 1/48

Recommended Posts

Just a quickie. I've found out that thinning the Vallejo varnish with water is the way to go. I used my second old airbrush but it's spitting everywhere so I used the Iwata and it went on a dream. I quite like the finish on the metal. I need to do a few more weathering and stain passes, the olive I'm guessing should be Matt but I might leave the metal with the Vallejo finish.

Thoughts?

I bunged the turbo chargers in too.

Great stuff.

+1 for a satin.

Matt will kill off too much sparkle and make it look like light grey instead of NMF 👍🏿

Thanks Tony. Do you like the look of the metal the way it is in the last two shots? It looks kinda satin now it's been watered down.

the painted finish needs Matt though right? :rambo:

Yeah that's what i'd do Johnny.

Satin for metal then matt for painted areas. Especially the olive drab bits, whole reason they are there is to stop the glare 👍🏿

For me she looks just right as she is, with matt on the Olive.

Good job Johnny (apart from the wheel pun, obviously) :D

I agree with the others, satin finish on metal looks spot on  And I just love the weathering effect of oil on metal :worthy:

Good luck with all that resin, Johnny. I incidentally noticed it contains some wheel bits ...  :D

Ciao

As per the others Johnny, matt on the paint, satin on the NMF. Looking wheely good ... erm... ok.. :coat:

Only troublesome glitch though, as noted above, will be removing the tyres from the casting blocks. You should be able to rescribe the main wheels, but the nose wheel looks tricky as it appears to have an elliptical thread pattern. Any thoughts?

Wheely nice... but good luck separating them from their lumps!

Has to be satin on the NMF and Matt on the anti glare.

You're ploughing through this now!

I've had to work all day so no plastic for me... better get on it tomorrow before you beat me to the finish line :o

Thanks. Not a chance that I'll catch you up, I still have heaps to do.:christmas:

Very impressive with weathering looks natural, definitely not a tail sitter.

Thanks, no she has a lot of lead up there.-_-

Thanks dude. The wheels look worse than they are if you catch my drift. They are only attached at the tips of those flash parts and at the base, the rest is just loose. Hopefully I haven't done the wrong thing and sanded the joining part slightly flat, as I do with all my tyres. The slight join mark got sanded too and I re scribed the lines.

I'd post a pic but Photobucket is being a fist and won't let me upload. They look ok though.

They look pretty good. I was going to paint them but it's such a nice day, my back is feeling better and the chickens needed cleaning out so.

I did however do a little chipping with a silver Water colour pencil I bought a while ago.

Hopefully more later.

Hope you're all having a fab weekend.

OK, wait wait wait....

Are you guys talking about a flat finish on the tyres, as in " Matt", or is it about a flat spot on the tyres to sit on the ground surface so it doesn't look like the tyres are made of steel? Or both...?!

Ref. the second option, I just enjoyed building the little airfix Mustang in 1/72, and it came with bulged and flattened tyres AND rectangular axles and holes to put them in the right position. Well pleased with that (once I noticed!)

Anyhoo... are you gonna flat them, or just flat them? And if you flat them, do you flat the flat, or flat the tyres too...? 😊

I think it's both. I have made a flat spot for the Tyres to sit on and I'll paint em matt/flat.  To be fair I think you are meant to sand these flat on the bottom because of the little connecting bit.  I hope that clears it up.

What a delightful looking garden you have! Love it! Chickens look healthy.

Those resin wheels look really nice and very detailed, looking forward to you painting them and really making them pop

Absolutely Spadulous dahling. Just caught up with those latter painting steps, shuddered then cheered at the decal drama, and admired those lovely dirty Alien turbochargers. You must rightfully feel pleased at how this baby has emerged from the wash(es).

Bravo Johnny!

Does the oil wash take an age to dry. It looks really effective.....

Before I wash off I leave it an hour or so. And pretty much the same before a top coat.

And thanks.
