Flipper
Hi folks now time for my 5th car build, it's Revell's BMW M3 DTM from the 2012 Season. Before I kick of here is some info on this car and its driver. "The German DTM championship is an intense German race which pits touring cars against one another. These cars are designed to exacting standards lain out by the race rules. Every vehicle has to be under a certain cost and be the same wheelbase, length, width and weight as all the other cars. In 2012, Martin Tomczyk was successful in the new BMW M3 DTM. He had been champion in 2011 and won 69 points in 2012 thanks to several podium finishes." First up is the box And the instructions. The decals call out, "OMG" and here I though the 1/12 MotoGP bikes had a lot of decals, what have I let myself in for. The decal sheet, the decals do look really good The body shell, there is quite a lot of mould lines and flash, but nothing a bit of sanding and scraping won't sort out. Now the sprues, first of is the horrible chrome one, yes I know they need to chrome some parts, but for the love of g, try and get it right. For example the new 1/24 Aoshima Pagani Huayra kit, has some of the best chrome parts I've ever seen, so it is possible to get it right. The side profile of the tyres which look nice....... ....... Well until you turn them round, the flat road surface is well not flat, hopefully the wheels will push them out a bit, but I feel the sandy sticks will be coming out. The fronts The rears which are a bit better And on with the rest of the sprues. Now it was always my intention to add a bit of carbon fibre detailing to the kit using decal sheets from Scale Motorsport. However after a surf on Hiroboy's site I found that a company call "Racing Decals 43" did a carbon decal kit for this car. However it was out of stock. I then contacted the company who kindly sent these out very quickly. http://www.racingdecals43.com/ The decal sheets, yep if there wasn't enough decals lol The outside The inside The instructions These decals sheets are quite comprehensive, but by looking at them the miss just a few bits, so I found that a carbon decal sheet in the 1/12th scale from Scale Motorsport is almost the same design and colour, and to add a few other touches I bought a Carbon Kevlar decal sheet as well. The kit comes with pretty decent wheels (apart from the chrome), but Hobby Design do a wheel and brake upgrade kit for it, so I though sod it, so whilst the wife wasn't looking at the bank account, I ordered a set from Hiroboy. I ordered them on Friday past so they've yet to arrive. Here's some pics from their website. That's it for the moment, as I study the instructions (I can feel a headache coming on) Thanks for looking, cheers.
Flipper
The basic chassis of the car which had a slight curve to the front. Other than that and the odd seem line it was in good shape. On the rear the tow hook was moulded into the plastic defuser. I didnt like this so I sanded it flat. I'll replace this with a piece of wire later on in the build. I then gave it a coat of UMP prime, then a coat of Tamiya Semi Gloss Black and then clear coated in Pledge Kleer. Next up was the carbon decal kit from "Racing Decals 43". Like I said this is quite a comprehensive kit, but it could be better. Thankfully I found the the Scale Motorsport Decal 1012 was a close enough match. As you can see here it doesn't go back far enough. And after I've added some more carbon decals. I was looking at this and kicking myself for not getting rid of the injection marks, but I did a dry fit of everything and thankfully you don't see them. The rear defuser only had a kit decal on the flat face of it. And again after I've added carbon decals to the other faces of the upper part of the defuser. Next up the "vanes" of the defuser. The kit only supplied decals for the faces of the vanes or whatever they are called. And looking down onto the rear of the underside of the car. I thought this part particularly needed some extra carbon decals This was a lot of work. I gave them a satin finish by holding the part a long way from the airbrush when using Kleer. I was going to do the rest of the underside of the car, but I didn't have enough carbon decal sheets left. Next up the engine etc
Flipper
Next up was the engine, which in terms of detail is night and day compared to the i8 build. All the parts that make up the engine I then built it up. Here it is with exhausts and the inlet manifords. The engine was then painted in UMP Black Primer The engine was then painted in Vallejo Metal Color Aluminium and I highlighted a couple of area in Vallejo Metal Color Magnesium. I then gave it a Dark Wash. The inlet manifold/inlets were then painted in Vallejo Metal Color Dark Aluminium, and were also given a Dark Wash. These were then attached to the engine. Next up was what I believe is the plenum chamber. My apologises if I get it wrong when naming these parts. Me being me, I didn't take any pics of the process before it was finished. I wanted to use a different carbon decal to add a contrast between these parts and the rest of the chassis. I used Scale Motorsport carbon decal no 1424. There is also the first decal from the kit which if you haven't got good eyesight reads MV8. Next up was the exhaust. I added the heat staining using Tamiya Smoke, Tamiya Clear Blue and Alclad Hot Metal Violet. And all attached to the engine That's it for the moment, next up all the ducting etc.
Flipper
Next up was the intercoolers and vents to the front brakes. The vent outlets that lead into the wheel arch are solid. I then decided I didn't like it, so out came the drill and I opened up the holes It was then painted in black primer and Tamiya Semi Gloss Black (yep I go through a lot of it). I then clear coated it. Next out came the Scale Motorsport carbon decal sheet no 1424. Also on various photos I've seen of the car there is a red tow hook or cloth in the front of this part. So I created a small tow hook and painted it red. It was then installed in the car. Hopefully the difference in carbon will add a bit of contrast.
Flipper
I must be sadistic as I like doing all these decals. Next up was the front suspension struts and steering. The wheel upgrade kit came with all new attachments for the aftermarket wheels. The grey parts are the aftermarket Resin parts. These were then painted up in a mixture of Tamiya German Grey and Tamiya Semi Gloss Black and fitted to the chassis. Then it was onto the prop shaft and rear gearbox which came in 3 sections And all joined up. The prop shaft was then painted Tamiya Semi Gloss Black, and the gearbox in Vallejo Dark Aluminium. It was then given a Dark Wash. The driveshafts were then painted in a mixture of Vallejo Gold and Magnesium. The rear suspension crandle was also given a coat of the Tamiya German Grey and Semi Gloss Black All the components of the rear end was then fitted to the chassis. Next up is some other engine details.
Flipper
Next up was the air intake for the engine. Here it is along with the unpainted plenum chamber. The air intake was then painted Semi Gloss Black and decalled using more of the Scale Motorsport Carbon Decal no 1424. I then highlighted certain parts using Vallejo Model Air Aluminium. It was then given several coats of Kleer. The engine and intake were then fitted to the chassis. And that's how it stands at the moment. I've just started prepping all the interior parts. I'm also waiting on the Hobby Design PE kit arriving from Hiroboy.
Flipper
Next I though some of the exterior parts were a bit clunky so whilst SWMBO was again looking the other way, I got back onto Hiroboy and ordered the Hobby Design PE Kit for the car. It's fairly comprehensive I should use a fair bit of it. (Famous last words eh) Next part or section to be started was the tub/interior section of the car. Thankfully it wasn't warped and appeared true in shape. Also shown is the firewall section of the car. After I had sanded off all the flash and mould lines, I painted it in UMP black primer before giving it a coat of Tamiya Semi Gloss Black. It was then clear coated. I then dug out the Racing Decals 43 Carbon Decal kit, and applied these decals. Although it was quite a comprehensive kit, there were some areas that were not included. The major area being that taken up by the parcel shelf area, firewall and floor areas. I covered these with sections from the Scale Motorsport Decal sheet no 1012. This did take a while to do. Using the Pledge Kleer I then gave the tub a satin finish, I also applied the kit decals and painted some of the knobs in the centre console. It must be a sadistic side of being a modeller as we do all this work and it will almost certainly in the most be hidden from view. So that's the basic tub finished now on with all the bits and bobs that go into it.
Flipper
Next up were the door panels. These were also painted with UMP Black Primer and given a coat of Tamiya Semi Gloss Black. Then the Racing Decals 43 kit decals were then added. There was a couple of areas that the kit missed, but thankfully the kit gives you a small area of spare decals, so I used this on the top edge of the doors. These will be put away until the shell gets painted as it looks like they attach to the main shell. Next up here's all the parts that make up the interior, Most of these parts will be carbon decaled in the Scale Motorsports carbon decal no 1424 instead of being painted. The only part that I'll not carbon decal is the roll cage. More of that later. All the parts were painted with UMP Black Primer, Tamiya Semi Gloss Black and then given a clear coat before the decals were applied. First up, is what I think is the fresh air intake system for the driver. The pedals, the kit calls out for these to be painted aluminium but I like them in black. Then onto the firewall The "flappy" paddles which is a PE part. The tiny steering wheel which is less that 1cm in width The display, to show you how small this is, the carbon decal is the same used in the engine plenum chamber. I was surprised my iPhone picked up the detail on this part. Various bits and bobs that sit next to the driver, where the passenger seat should be. This is the shroud that goes round the head area of the driver. I don't know wither this should have been carbon decaled or not, but I though heck why not. (I was on a roll lol) Another small part the interior mirror. The "mirror" part was a kit decal. I might replace with a PE part from the kit which I'll polish up, The roll cage (which I'll fit later), steering column support and steering column. All these parts were painted in Vallejo Metal Color Gunmetal. I painted the pads Tamiya Black Rubber, and picked out the rings on the cage with Tamiya Semi Gloss Black. I then fitted up most of the parts. I'll leave the steering wheel off until I've fitted the seat. More of that later. The floor area not covered with carbon decal will be covered by the seat. The firewall fitted up. Cheers folks.
Flipper
Well its been one of those days!!!!!. First of I shattered one of the inserts on the resin aftermarket wheels arghhhhhhh. Well I didn't need the £20 I've just had to splash out for another wheel kit grrrrrrrr!!!!!!!. If I hadn't already fitted the aftermarket kit hubs I wouldn't have bothered and just used the Revell kit stuff instead. Anyway I though the day could only get better after that. So next up was the seat. You can see the harness moulded into the seat. I wanted to use the PE kit harnesses. So I smoothed and filled the seat to get rid of the belts. Next up I flocked the seat. I then spent most of the day trying to get the harnesses to work, and the day didn't get any better as I just couldn't get the PE harness kit to work. Me and PE just don't get on at times. Anyway I gave up on the idea of harnesses, I'll find a better solution and come back to it at a later date. So I fitted the seat and head protector into the tub. I also fitted the flappy paddles and steering I then fitted the roll cage and rear view mirror And loosely fitted into the chassis. I'll glue it in later And that's how it stands at the moment. So whilst I wait on a new wheel kit arriving I'll crack on with the body work.
Madhatter
I think I almost used up my entire daily "like"lmit with your thread! What a great machine you've made so far. I give you full kudos for having the patience to do all of that carbon Fiber decalling!! But man - what a fantastic result and it is so very much worth the effort you have obviously expended on it I always think some of these DTM cars would look awesome as street machines and when I first saw this one 10 minutes ago, I thought the same thing that this would look wicked in Fire Engine Red with black trim or even Metallic Electric Blue with dark Grey trimming.

Flipper
Cheers folks, I honestly must be sadistic as for me the best part of any model is the decal work. Also I've just purchased a Tamiya Mercedes CLK-GTR which will also hopefully have the full carbon treatment, although I don't think there is a kit for that one, so it will be all my own work. Oh joy lol
vrsmatt99
Amazing Carbon Fibre work! Really brings that interior and engine bay alive! I have built this kit too and used the Racing 43 decal sheet aswell. Really good quality I thought. This will look fantastic when finished. Scale Motorsport do a Carbon Fibre Decal sheet for the Mercedes CLK GTR, but it is quite difficult to get hold of now, I looked to do one myself a while ago. Cheers Matt
Flipper
Cheers Matt, yeh I think I saw your build when I was doing some research for this build. I agree the decals are of good quality. I never knew Scale Motorsport did a decal sheet for the CLK, like most older kits it's like trying to find hens teeth getting bits for them. Grey Beema
Can you make the harness out of a softer material like the thick foil from a wine bottle (unfortunately you might have to drink the wine but every hobby has sacrifices) if there is a seatbelt decal you could put that on the foil and cut around it once hardened..
Flipper
Cheers folks. Grey me likes wine mmmm so that might be an idea lol. I'm having real problems with Photobucket not recognising photos on my phone, and my iPhone deleting pics when it shouldn't. Due an upgrade soon so hopefully that will fix it. Anyway as my pics of the brakes won't upload here's a generic pic of the brakes from the resin kit from Hobby Design. I then used various shades of Vallejo Metal Color to get the desired effect I was looking for. Here's the finished result. The way these attach to the wheels and hub I think I'm gonna need a degree in origami and an extra pair of hands. The calipers The discs and calipers Now onto the wheels here's a pic of the wheels and centre pin located in them. And the difference between the aftermarket wheels and the Revell wheels minus the chrome. And my nightmare which resulted in me buying a new wheel/brake kit. Since learned that resin can be very fragile. The wheels of the original car look Black in some photos however as far as I am led to believe they are a dark Magnesium shade. I then painted the wheels in a mixture of Tamiya Semi Gloss Black and Vallejo Metal Color Magnesium. The wheels are a lot darker in real life, the daylight lamp fairly lightens them up. Without the centre pin And with the centre pin That's it for the moment until I sand off the tyres and mount them.
MikeGTC
Yea I did that to once with some resin wheels, lucky I found all the tiny parts and was able to glue it back together. Mike
Flipper
Hi there folks not been on here for a while, due to a lot of personal stuff going at the moment. However I've managed to get some minor work done on the car. The Revell decals are good but where the front side vanes (I think that's what you call them) they don't quite cover enough. I could have left it as is, but I wanted the stripes to cover more. So I did it the expensive way and bought another kit. Here's a before pic And after, not great but hopefully it will look a lot better when it is given a coat of 2K and the vanes are fitted. Next up was the area above the firewall. Before And after Hopefully over the next few days I'll get back into it and put some clear coat down. Edited April 23, 2017 by Flipper
Flipper
Did some more on the M3 today. One of the issues with the original kit decals is where the horizontal stripes pass over the position of the door handles. So using the 2nd kits decals I cut small sections out and blended them in. Much better. Once all the decals were applied, I let them dry overnight, I then gave the car a coat of Zero Paints Diamond Finish Clear Coat. Once this is dry I've got several areas of black to paint, then lay down some more Diamond Finish. Next up the wheels were mounted to the tyres, the white lettering is hand painted with the smallest brush I could find. That's it for the moment, hopefully I'll get some more done tomorrow.
shood23
Looking great flipper. Bad about the decals not fitting as well as hoped but you fixed well (albeit expensive fix) Shaun
Flipper
Cheers Shaun, still not doing as much as I should be doing due to the local Dr's playing about with my pain melds for my knee. I'm hoping over the next week or two I'll get a lot more done.
