I was going to build the Vickers guns last night but couldn't find them. (those who read all my WIPs will see that has been a common theme this week!)

Instead, I finished the second last round of airbrushing of 507B grey, and stuck a few bits down. I also got started on railings, but the paint was still a bit soft and chipped like acrylic so I parked it under pressure to watch a dancing show in the living room which my daughters took upon themselves to choreograph

Today I received a picture message from dearest wife:

Accompanied by the explanation "They were in your red box of ####". Oopsie!

Gill folded up the remaining ammunition lockers.

I made up the Vickers guns. I actually only finished one (3 others about 75% complete) before there was lots of crashing and banging of furniture being moved so I gave up. These are really, REALLY nice, but some parts are quite small so you have to concentrate.

Wife and co-model builder!? Lucky!!

It does get through the tedious bits (e.g. folding up dozens of ammunition lockers!) rather more quickly with help, so yes it's good :)

It turns out that there are certain transferrable skills between model making and beauty therapy. The former can shape and paint finger nails well (good when you live with a wife and 2 daughters) and the latter can employ dexterity with tweezers equally well on photo etched brass.

just caught up with this thread and all I can really do is echo other comments about how well you have made those PE parts. What you've done with the kit as a whole is amazing though. I shall be tuning into this one as it goes along :)

I did nowt on models this weekend.

Tonight I finished assembling the Vickers guns and built up the UP launchers. I did start using the kit parts but they really are dreadful, then I remembered the Flyhawk turret set came with resin launchers. That's what I used.

Today I did some rigging. I'm not convinced it's completely right and there might be more to do pending the answer to a question I've asked in the right place.

20170401_115354_zpsn46t3gby.jpg

I started the foremast yard rigging last night and it was a complete failure, so this morning I started afresh by knocking out the funnels first, then removed the yard from the model and stuck it to blutac on a sheet of plasticard. Last night's difficulty was attaching the lower ends. Today I cut little sections if 1/700 ladder to thread through thus

20170401_122947_zpscpwvjcck.jpg

Securing only at the top I did them all like that off the model

20170401_130316_zpsyj9vv6tm.jpg

I then thought I'd just place the yard on top of the forward funnel and concentrate on fixing the little ladder sections at the bottoms of the rigging

20170401_134132_zpsbeugm6eq.jpg

Then lift the yard up in to place and sit stand very still whilst a dab of CA dries.

The yard is quite bent under the tension of the lycra. Both plastic and photo etched brass are really weak in this respect. Turned brass yards are far superior but I haven't got any. I've managed to straighten them out with well tensioned rigging from the yard ends to the tripod and spotting top

That's fantastic work Jamie, I try and learn as I go along and your helping no end, problem is doing it myself.:nah:

If you're anything like most modellers I know, you'll be your own harshest critic Ally. It's supposed to be about enjoyment so if you're enjoying it and getting a wee bit better as you go, you're doing it right by my book :)

Yes it's needle tweezer work for sure! :D

I'd like to have some artifact. If I had such a spoon it would probably get sent off in one of my daughters' lunch boxes and lost . I saw someone bought a tompion from Hood recently from eBay. It's amazing what's in circulation really ::)

Anyway, this weekend has involved a lot of emptying out a garden pond that hadn't been maintained for a long time (before we bought this house!). It was filthy really, so emptying it was the only option. 25 koi were found and moved to a bath tub (every country property has an outdoor bathtub, for the sheep) and we spent most of the time doing that. It's looking rather good now, but Hood isn't finished. I did finish the rigging though. Neither Flyhawk nor White Ensign sets contained the maintopmast yardarm / aerial spreader but I found a perfect sized one in a 1/700 Master set I'd bought for the Renown build I kinda lost interest in (1/700 just doesn't float my boat - chuckle chuckle, no? oh well) so used that. The aerials were fitted and the mainmast rigging completed.

I think I'm on the home stretch now and am at serious risk of finishing a ship model this year.

It's almost finished now. There are still a few small bits and bobs to add, as well as a bit of a painting touchup campaign (e.g. where pre-sprayed PE was cut from its fret, a few shiny bits of CA etc, plus painting some little details).

It's close though. Oh, and I fixed that damned crane!

That is beautiful Jamie. Did you clear the pond so that you have somewhere to display it? :D

I hope to see it finished when I am up that way next :)

Cheers,

Stew

And indeed you shall Stew - it's coming with us to Perth now too (which is the reason for me pushing on with it actually!)

Somewhat embarrassingly, because this isn't the sort of gaff I typically make, someone pointed out to me that I had two of Hood's screws on the wrong side / turning the wrong way!

I corrected that this morning half dressed on my way to the ironing board to sort a shirt out for today.

I was also asked on a Facebook modelling group for pics without glare. I couldn't help that past 9pm last night but the sun was just coming up so I took a few replacements this morning

Fantastic work, great rigging job.

The ships crest on the base plate is a very nice touch.

Hi Bernd, thank you.

The crest was on the White Ensign Models set and when I recognised it I wanted to use it somehow, so I painted it and glued it to the base as you see :)

The railings by the way are all from the WEM set. Flyhawk included plenty of generic railing but Peter Hall's design included specific sections for every position with the right stanchion spacings and diagonal braces. The Flyhawk would have been an absolute pain in the behind to use. They were almost all a perfect fit except the farthest forward shelterdeck sections ahead of the ladders which were a bit short, so I filled in the gaps with spare railing included in the WEM set.

There are a few little davits, the nightlife bouys and paravanes still to add. That's about it really.
