OMG, it's nearly summer and it's a finished Eurofighter

Recommended Posts

My 14 year old daughter joined the air cadets last year & it appears that she has become mad keen on airplanes (swmbo is not impressed). Her favourite at the airshows we go to is the Eurofighter, despite my fondness for Lysanders, Hurricanes and the Miles Messenger. As it happens my step daughter gave me this kit for Christmas, so it seems it's time to build a kit that requires no ez-line.

As with most of the planes I build, this one will end up hanging from the ceiling, so I shan't be bothering with any aftermarket bits & bobs.

However, before it gets hung up & gets its' full load of weapons fitted, I'm going to try and photoshop it into this picture:

It worked quite well with Sally-B, so I thought I'd give it another go.

I can't remember the last time I built a Jet, so this could be a disaster. My paints of choice are Vallejo model-air, so if anyone has any thoughts on the shades of grey that I should use I'd be most grateful if you could share those thoughts.

Here are some pics I took that are fairly self explanatory, initial progress should be posted tomorrow.

I'm in Andy! Not my scale of course, but as it's you... and it'll be interesting to see how it compares with the 'little one'!

As above. I guess its the only real problem with the kit from what I've read. And you will need two more pylons for fully payload. I guess it was the most inner wing pylons that are not included ( as far as I remember). But they are not necessary. So you can also leave them out. Cheers

I'm in too, I'll be interested to see what you make of the intakes.

Stuff in some covers, and damn their impudence! (Don't know if it's common practice elsewhere, but the Luftwaffe guys seem to shove a large red bin-bag over the whole opening...)

Haven't seen many 2-holers so will watch this with much interest.

Quite a few hours effort on this today & nothing much to show yet....

Nowhere near as good as many of the cockpits I've seen on here, but as it'll never be seen once she's hanging up, it's good enough.

I did try dry fitting it  all into the fuselage & the tops of the seats do touch the canopy, but I reckon 0.5mm of the bottom of each seat should be enough. I'll try another dry fit when all the paint & glue has fully set - the first time I dry fitted one of the seats, one of the sides fell off !

This has been very therapeutic, yesterday was a god-awful day. Firstly I fitted a DCC sound decoder to an n-gauge merchant navy locomotive. All appeared OK, the sound worked nicely, the train moved off and then one of the gear rods jammed, the wheels stopped turning but the motor didn't, stripping the gears. So that's that - it needs a whole new chassis assembly. Then I sat down yesterday evening to watch the glorious gunners. I should have known better. Luckily I didn't decide to give up drinking or smoking for Lent.

I managed to sneak in a few hours this afternoon - finished the cockpit, fixed the two halves of the fuselage together & started adding the bits & bobs to the lower wing.

When the fuselage was set, I tried  dry fitting it to the lower wing - I was pleasantly surprised to find that everything aligns perfectly. I  fitted the wheel wells even though it'll be closed up as I guess they give a bit more strength to the body.

My airbrush has been playing up - spraying at an odd angle & spitting all the time, following Ced's advice I checked the nozzle & it looked OK, so I took the simple option - I ordered another one from ebay. It arrived to day, and I can already see that it is better than the one I had before. The original came as part of a bundle with my compressor. The new one has three needles - 0.2, 0.3 & 0.5, and a quick release thingamybob, all for a measly £15.

Here are a couple of pics:

Progress has been slow today - to try and get a smooth finish om the intakes, I thought I'd try what can only be described as a very amateur technique - paint as filler. a heavy dollop of white paint & leave it to set, of course it takes all day & I have to do each side independently - so there's two days gone, but it does look OK to my untrained eye:

So, while that was drying, I started making up some of the payload & had a go at spraying one of the 1,000 ltr tanks. I'm using Vallejo model air Barley grey, but I swear it looks too dark - has anyone else used this colour?. Oddly the number (71.051) is the same for their neutral grey & funnily enough, when I put a drop of each next to each other on my palette, they look the same.

Too dark ?

  • 3 weeks later...

Oh boy, I'd forgotten how much gardening there is to do once spring is here! Not much modelling over the last few weeks, just an hour here and an hour there. Now it's coming together, but there is a lot of filling & filing still to do before the base coat goes on....

The blu tac was used so that I could actually get a hold of the door  to move it into position - looks like a little bit of filling will be needed around both sets of doors.

This one wasn't so bad

So a bit more tidying up, fit the rear instrument panel & masked canopy, then it should be ready for a base coat (Citadel white).

John

I'm hoping it won't be long now. I managed another hour after work today - canopy fitted, a quick spray of black around the edges in the hope that no white shows through to the cabin & then the first spray of primer....

Not a lot happened this week - I was on a training course with 'uncle Bob' in London, but I did manage to get two coats of grey on. Before painting I used a Gundam panel line marker to pick out the panel lines, in the hope that it would show through only slightly once the grey was on top.....

That all looked good to me, so today I gave the whole thing a spray with Mr super clear in readiness for the decals. This is the first time I've used the stuff, but have seen others use it on here to great effect

.

This has had a somewhat interesting, and completely unwanted effect - it's brought the black ink back to the surface!

Yet another lesson learnt. I'll leave it a few hours & then give it yet another coat of grey, and then more mr super clear....

lots of excitement today - decal, after decal, after decal... I reckon I'm going t be another two weeks on these decals !  So as a little diversion I tried the Flory on the drop tank:

here it is before the Flory...

33222903633_da947eb97d_z.jpgWP_20170414_11_12_00_Pro_LI by Andy Moore, on Flickr

then a covering of the gunk...

33222902213_8310521c43_z.jpgWP_20170414_11_18_57_Pro_LI by Andy Moore, on Flickr

then just wipe it off..

And so back to the decals... I've done roughly  50% of the port side!

Phew - that's all the decals on the top done, just the underside to do now, and the nose is fitted. I'm a little confused, there are about 40 "lift here" decals, but no sign of them on the instruction sheet.

This week I managed some time to try out using the Flory....

33465533854_d167de253d_z.jpgWP_20170427_17_32_31_Pro by Andy Moore, on Flickr

I left it a couple of days, then started scrubbing....

34176206951_0468a2847c_z.jpgWP_20170427_18_13_46_Pro_LI by Andy Moore, on Flickr

then a little weathering above the exhaust thingy, followed by a coat of matt (Winsor & Newton)

so over the weekend I'll start attaching all the small details. I've left them off till now as I thought they'd make scrubbing the Flory off more difficult.

Ooh it's been a while since I caught up with this. Those decals go on forever don't they, :analintruder: great job though especially after the pen leak problem. She's looking the business. ( Flory washes are brilliant aren't they )
