nuuumannn
Hello, I recently took the opportunity to visit The Vintage Aviator's hangar at Hood Aerodrome, where the aeroplanes are rather hemmed in, but make a pleasant afternoon admiring them at close quarters. Albatros D II; Albatros D Va; B.E.2c; B.E.2f; B.E.12; Camel; The One and Only Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; DH-4; More in a minute...
nuuumannn
More from TVAL; F.E.2b; LVG C VI; Pup; S.E.5a; Snipe; Tripe; Overviews of the hangar illustrating how tightly everything is packed in; B.E.2a at centre; Avro 504K at centre; As you all know, TVAL is the one-to-one scale arm of Wingnut Wings, and while I was there I took the opportunity to do some walkarounds, so if any of you require particular detailed images from the aircraft featured, let me know.
Beardie
Jings! You must have been tempted to jump in and offski in at least one of those beauties! Could you not contact Julien (I think he is still the walkaround specialist) and see if he would like to stick all your pics of these beauties in the walkaround section for all to admire?
nuuumannn
Hi Beardie, I haven't edited the pics yet, there are literally hundreds of images, of 14 of the aircraft from that visit, so it'll take time before they are ready for a complete look. If you want to see some particular detail, I can certainly post it here or send it to you, but, if you look at my signature, you'll see I have my own walkaround site, which is were the images will end up eventually. As it stands I still have nearly 100 aircraft types waiting to be added to the site, so they might be awhile. I'm sure forum members can admire them on my site - note, I don't get paid or make anything from it; I put the effort in purely for my own enjoyment: http://warbirdswalkaround.wixsite.com/warbirds
Britman
I hope they have an advanced fire suppression system there, that lot would go up in a flash! The one thing that has eluded me whilst building my Triplane has been a detailed image of the rigging that passes through the leading edge of the middle wing. In consequence I have had to guess at it and "wing it", an image of that would be handy. You really have done well in such a crowded hanger there and it is great that you should share them with us. Thank you. Keith.
andrewfl290
Oh my word! What a superb collection and fantastic pictures. Thank you for sharing your passion so we can all enjoy. I'm going to be spending some time browsing your website too.
Beardie
Yup thanks for drawing my attention to your own site Nuuumannn. I will be having a bit of a browse around it very shortly. I don't have any specific requirements at the moment but I do rather enjoy just perusing images of these amazing old birds.

nuuumannn
Thanks guys. Difficult to photograph in there since the lower areas are quite dark and contrasting that with natural light at high level played havoc with my camera, but flash helped. No so easy to do walkarounds, but I got some good stuff. I did notice that my camera had focussing issues, though. As far as the collection goes, that's only a portion of the size of it; in a workshop hangar is a Bristol Fighter, an R.E.8, a Pup, another F.E.2b, a couple of S.E.5as, the Hanriot that used to be at Hendon; lots of stuff. Britman, sadly, the photo I took of the wires going through the Tripe's centre wing leading edge, see the second photo, came out blurry, as did a few others (disappointed - an incomplete walkaround), but as you can see from the top photo, the two wires going from the lower fuse are the one's in question and they go through the middle wing like the single wire next to the clear inspection panel in the lower wing. The rest of the Tripe walkaround came out reasonably well, but contrast was a big issue in there.
kiwitrogg
Lovely photos, thanks. It's a great place to visit aye ! They must have has a bit of a shuffle round. I was there a couple of weeks ago; I would have liked to have seen the Albatroses but they were in another hanger being prepared for the WoW (that was unfortunately cancelled because of the weather). The staff were brilliant. The size of the FE2b surprised me !

The machines do have their concessions to modern life; the Tripe is the only aeroplane in the hangar on the day I visited that doesn't have a representative of its original engine; a rotary radial in this case. The Pup, Snipe, Avro 504K and Fokker E V all have rotary radials. I've just noticed, again, you can see where the two wires go through the mid wing in this shot. The turnbuckle is mounted in the leading edge. Edited March 4, 2017 by nuuumannn
Paul Alan Bardell
Great Photos - it must have been a grand day out. Looks like they need a bigger Hanger - NO wait, ship some of these over to the UK for us to have a closer look!
Mancunian airman
You are very fortunate to catch them all in there. I visited from Blighty and only got to photograph the SE5. There may of been a few others but me and my other half we were rather keen on the SE5 because a relative of hers was killed May 7th 1917 flying that type. The other reason I called at the airfield was to see the 'Dambuster' Lancaster(s) aircraft in one of the other hangars but they politely refused me Ian
nuuumannn
Thanks everyone. Paul, they already have, the RAF Museum has a Snipe, Albatros D Va and R.E.8 and Stow Maries airfield has a couple of things from TVAL as well! Mancunian, you'd be lucky to see the Lanc mock ups! If you look hard, there are pics of it doing the rounds on the net I'm sure. As for the S.E.5a, I did do a walkaround of it and hopefully will put it on my site soon. IrishKiwi
Hi all. I have the pleasure of living in Masterton and as TVAL has open weekends over summer I get to view the aircraft regularly, as well as occasionally seeing them flying over head. Last Sunday while walking the dog's near the airport I saw two S.E.5a's flying in formation with a Tiger moth. I never get tried of seeing them. Rumour has it that Sir Peter Jackson is building a Handley-Page 400. If so it will be based at Masterton when finished.
Bear Paw
Hello Nuumannn, great photos and how good to be on the same side of the world as that 1/1 collection. If you do not mind I would like to ask a favour. I would like to see the rear flap control piviot that is on the fuselage side by the pilots cockpit on the RAF Be2c please. Andrew. nuuumannn
Hi Bear Paw, I'm not exactly sure what it is that you mean by 'rear flap control piviot'? Is this what you mean? It's located on the left hand side of the pilot's cockpit. This is from the B.E.2f, as I didn't do the B.E.2c. https://www.flickr.com/gp/147661871@N04/pSqgC4 Edited May 10, 2017 by nuuumannn
Beardie
Nuuuumannn I believe what is meant is the wooden piece on the outside of the fuselage below the pilots' cockpit with cables top and bottom that go back to the tail and operate the elevator. You can see it in the picture with the BE.2a in the centre further up the thread (dark wood pivoted in the centre with cables to the elevators.

Yes the elevator activator arms with the cables attached to the top and bottom on the outside of the cockpit. From what I can see the cables are attached to horns on the elevator on the tailplane.
