SteveV8
Hi forum, This is my first post on this forum hope you like it. This is model of the car Australian driver Frank Gardner raced in the ETCC at Zolder Belgium 5/5/68. The model is a combination on the ESCI 'Clear view' rally car kit and a resin transkit from 'Passion for Racers' in Belgium. There was a bit of trimming, filing and sanding required to make all the parts fit properly but all in all it worked out well. I did however need to build the rear suspension from scratch to be more accurate and the front suspension needed modifications also and i also made the exhaust system from solder and aluminium tubing. The resin castings are really good and the Lotus engine looks fantastic with the Weber carburetors. The paint is decanted Tamiya spray paint used in an airbrush, i went through 4 different types of gold paint before i was happy with the results. Anyway i hope you like it, Cheers.

keefr22
That is just gorgeous! I've got two of the PfR transkits in stock, but they'll have to wait for scratchbuilt floorpans as I'm too tight to sacrifice Mk2 kits for them! Superb Mk1. really lovely finish! I wasn't sure about using the Mk2 either but am happy with the result and I have another Mk2 kit that I will build.

Yes the kit has a transparent body shell. Not sure if I would leave the body clear if I built the kit though.
stevehnz
Nice that, really takes me back some. The Alan Mann Escorts were pretty exciting, even when all one could do was read about it weeks later. I do like what you've done with the rear end, a bit non standard like, front looks dodgy too. PatW
Fantastic representation of the Alan Mann Mk1 Escort, very well done. I remember them with great regard, seeing them racing at the Silverstone Circuit just 5 miles where I'm sitting now. I also saw the great Frank Gardner when he visited the circuit on a few occasions, driving one of these, showing his great skill and talent. I had just started my marshalling 'career' in the early 70's. The Escorts, Mini Cooper 'S' and of course the Ford Falcons and Chevy Camaro's. Great times and even greater memories of outstanding real saloon car racing. Thanks for sharing. Edited March 5, 2017 by PatW

Thanks for the comments Pat, I really like that era of racing, not that i was around to see it in person but we have a great historic racing scene here in Australia and i was lucky enough to go to the Goodwood Revival last year which really blew me away. I see that 1 of these cars is up for auction soon, expecting 200,000 GBP! Just finishing some aircraft projects at the moment then back to the cars soon. Cheers. stevehnz
What I've enjoyed most about this build is seeing what these cars had underneath them. I was of an age to follow them, albeit with delayed race reports via Motoring News (?) but never knew what their setup was, very different to the Escorts I played with as a young man. They certainly were purpose built race cars even then, the suspension is as close as I could work out after doing quite a bit of research, there wasn't as much info available on the web as I thought, there is an Alan Mann racing book which I have and this was a good resource mostly text but some photos. The biggest thing with race cars is that they can be changed quite a lot between races so being too much of a rivet counter isn't really worth the frustration, if it looks right it is right. I have a Mk2 escort in my garage but more of a road car than a race car. Cheers Steve.
