Bandai 1/6 Stormtrooper

Recommended Posts

Earlier I asked if anyone had any thoughts about the scale of this Stormtroopers head.

I will attach some photos of the chap as he gets built up but I must say he looks like a bit of a bobble head from some angles.

I'm tempted to try and find a bare head as once you notice it it's a bit annoying

Oh cool paintjob!! B) Yeah that head looks massive! you sure that isnt the 1/6 helmet on a 1/12 figure :D

From what ive seen of helmets, costumes on real people & Bandai's 1/6 box art.. If you get the height of the helmet, using that measure down from under the helmet, then you arrive at the top of the stomach control box, measure down again and your somewhere near the top of the leg thigh armour. On your 1/6 model your arrive half way down the thigh.

So if it has a bigger head, and the figures the right height, then the body must be slightly too small too, right? how odd. Then again stormies came in different heights but this one looks like a 5ft one, scaled to 6ft. Doesnt make me want to buy one tbh.

Anyone know a good source of 1/6 heads ?

thinking of a bareheaded trooper , then I'll use the helmet on its own

I was thinking of getting a 1/6 head off Ebay for exampe for a Luke & Han version of these, but they were a bit expensive last time i looked.

Received Bob,

I'm more of a Clone fan really so this was a bit of a spontaneous purchase. I'm a bit  disappointed but a head change will sort it. I'll find a suitable bald head and report back

Back to Bandai's 1/12 clones . Next one will be a Wolfpack 104 Battalion grey and white version

I found a head in my spares box - sadly it has an uncanny likeness for Bruce Willis but does have the required shaved head and looks suitably tired

will need a neck made up to blend in to the torso and a paint .  Going for a post battle look

When you put the whole kit together I don't think the head is as oversized as it first seems.

Love the colour scheme Bubblearch.

You're right your plain white one looks OK. Weird

I'll post a picture when I have the new head . definitely going down the off duty/ post combat type thing .

his helmet looks OK as a standalone item - maybe on a tiny stand.

I'd been interested to see how it compares to the helmets Bandai sell - I've seen them advertised as 1/5 not 1/6

He looks good with a head on B) Take a look at these vids:

This one looks fine to me

Heres a Bandai 1/6 in a video next to Hot Toys Vader

If measured down again, the helmets height comes down to just below the top of the control box on the stomach in those vids above. Whereas on yours in this pic the helmet height goes right to the bottom. https://www.flickr.com/photos/147621094@N05/32861396645/

My guess is the early ones had a bigger head for some reason and then a new mold was made and it got changed to a smaller head.

located a suitable head . A Walking Dead character I think. Has a older look about him which I think would be appropriate for a Stromtrooper Commander.

plan is to use milliput to make his collar and then do the same on the shoulders to lose the ball joints and make him  look less cyborgish

That looks a hell of a lot better. I'm liking how this is coming along.

Fixed his head and started working on the collar and shoulders. Highly likely to fall at the last hurdle as I haven't painted a face recently but airbrushed some tones on to boost morale.

Only thing now bothering me is the relationship between his head and the armour in that it could look like he has a very short neck. I think it could be the shoulder armour distorting the proportion .  Too late now though as it's well stuck on. I think once the black under suit is painted it'll look OK.

  • 2 weeks later...

I managed a bit of progress today .

started on his eyes and added some hair colour to get me started.

I've also continued on with weathering the armour more. I find it very helpful to add  a bit and revisit again and again .

I originally just splattered various. Mig pastels and left then to dry.

Now I have applied completely dry mig industrial rubble with a brush working it in quite firmly.

then I went over  it with an old slightly and horrible stiff flat brush which gives the random scratching effect. I will continue layering it up.

In my view the more random the more realistic, particularly at this scale.

The pictures will assist
