Kahunaminor
Hello one and all, I started this build for the MTO GB which ended in December 2016 and failed to meet the deadline. So, it was suggested that I continue the WIP here. Not to bore you all with volumes of old pages, the original WIP can be found here and I will continue the build on this thread. To bring you up to speed, here is the last post: As I said, some slow progress. The aircraft has now had its Flory light dirt wash applied and removed. AK Interactive Ultra Matte Varnish for a protective top coat. I may have used a little too much thinner and defeated the dullness, so another light coat of less thinned is probably on the cards. The MLG oleos have had their BMF coverings, PE retraction struts and the wheels added. The BMF will be toned down a bit with some dust: The MLG angles look right from all directions so I am happy with the setup. Brake lines and MLG covers to go followed by some more lower area dirt. Kahunaminor
For those of you that have been following from the GB, you will know that I previously lost the port MG17 into the bowels of the closed fuselage during the build. The modelling Gods teased me with the sound of it dislodging a couple of days ago and rattling around before restoring silence. The additional sacrifice I offered (in the form of a additional purchase) must have paid off, as it dislodged last night and fell onto my desk. Photos to follow. Biggles87
Glad you retrieved the MG, it usually happens when you've fabricated/obtained a replacement.
Kahunaminor
With the modelling Gods appeased, the port MG 17 was affixed into position: The MLG have had their brake lines added and the covers added as well: Thanks for looking and regards,
Kahunaminor
Welcome back, Free of kids and SWMBO, I had a busy morning. Put on another coat of Ultra Matte Varnish, this time thinned about 30/70 instead of 50/50 and got a better flat finish. Then like a kid on Christmas morning the masks came off as I have pretty much finished the airframe. Gunsight and grab handle to go back in the cockpit, hinged canopy armour detail and antenna then onto the engine: Regards,
Biggles87
Looking really good, will it have a parasol to shade the cockpit? John

Kahunaminor
Welcome back, The antenna wire has been added from Ezi line, secured with CA. A loop was made through the thin copper "spring" and the PE piece doubled over through that loop and both sides secured to form the attachment at the tail. The insulators will be added from globs of white glue and painted light grey when dry: The fuselage insulator was a small piece of 0.05mm styrene rod with a small hole drilled into it. The Ezi line was attached at one end and the rod trimmed to size and affixed to the fuselage with CA. When set the vertical wire was positioned against the horizontal and secured with CA then trimmed: The cockpit has had the gun sight and port grab handle installed and some work done on the open canopy retention strap. I used thin copper wire to "beef up" the PE piece and as a spring for the antenna wire: As this build is destined to be a vignette, I have started blocking the scene as well: Regards,
Kahunaminor
A productive morning. Worked on the engine and canopy of the Bf 109E-7, adding PE and some decals to various places. The support brackets were installed once the engine numbers taken from the kit decals were in place: That warped resin will hopefully set correctly once it is installed. The decal is from the Aeroscale LW cockpit placards set. The canopy was next with the armour plating being installed. I had broken one of the tiny upper supports that came with the original, so luckily the PE set had a couple of spares: I have obtained a photo frame to use as a base for the vignette, but it may be a tad large. I may have to add another component.... Regards,
Kahunaminor
Welcome back, I was just fiddling around and before I knew it, I had an engine installed: I still have to do a wash, weather and add some wiring but its in! Regards,
One-Two
Man, that's a cool build! Very good job on this African Emil. Watching with interest.
Kahunaminor
Welcome back, Just to show I haven't totally forgotten this build, here a couple of updates. Here are the exhausts and tropical intake: New ground for me in that I plan to include at least two figures: I am working on a vignette concept, so it is still in its layout phase: The vehicle is is 1/48 Tamiya Type 82 Kubelwagen Afrika Korps boxing. The pilot figure is also from there and the mechanic is from the Eduard 1/48 Luftwaffe 1944 boxing. Regards,
stevehnz
That is a lovely job on this. Franzisket's aircraft is one of my favourite North African Luftwaffe schemes & I'm keen to do this in 1/72 with some Airfix decals I have. I'll be using this thread as a reference for how it should look. Steve.

I have been a tad distracted with my armour build but as that has hit a small impasse, it was time to get back to this build. I wanted to detail the engine a bit more as it is open for the world to see, so using this book to guide me: I set about adding some of the smaller bits of wiring that are obvious to the naked eye. This is by no means all encompassing but with some lead wire of various diameters, copper wire stripped from an old electrical cord, some swearing, some plastic rod, some BMF self adhesive foil, a lot more swearing and time, I came up with this: Still to be painted and weathered but a little closer to the photos than before. The steely eyed amongst you will have seen the engine appears out of alignment. It is but the addition of the spinner and its connection point will true it up enough and hopefully hide some errors!! stevehnz
That does look staggringly well done, ample reward for your hard work, which is why I build in 1/72, I'm allergic to that much hard work. Steve.
Kahunaminor
Welcome back, As I plan to have this completed for the NSW Scale Model Show early next month, I realised I had started wasting time on side issues such as the composition of the material for the base and came to a realisation: I can have an incomplete aircraft on a half finished base or if I don't finish the aircraft, I will have nothing to show at all! So, the engine has been completed as far as it will be. There is some more wiring I could do but this is it. Exhausts lined up and inserted through the openings and spark plug covers set in place. AK engine wash has covered a multitude of sins and tied the area together. Having said that, the MG gloves need a wash to tone them down. The tyres have been flattened slightly to show weight bearing and the drop tank has been added, plumbed and fuel spills added. Some minor engine oil leaks on the underside add a used look. A flat coat with AK ultra Matte Varnish is next up followed by final chipping effects then construction with prop and spinner assembly, canopy, mass balances and pitot. The ladder comes from the 1/48 Tamiya tank maintenance set, which has a lot of interesting pieces for any maintenance setting. Still three figures but one is shirtless so no easing into figures for me! Regards,
Kahunaminor
Slowly approaching the end. Canopy, prop and spinner assembly, pitot and mass balance (yes singular because one has gone astray) have been added. There is only the engine cowling latches and some minor metallic weathering to go: Regards
Kahunaminor
Okay calling the aircraft done: I wanted to create a small duckboard work area, so out came the paddle pop sticks, matches and white glue. An hour or so of measuring, cutting, scribing and gluing left me with this: Some tissue paper soaked in a white glue/paper mixture gives me a rag to cover a non existent hole in the sand filter housing. The match ends will be trimmed, some nail holes added with a pin as required and some ends squared before some paint and weathering. Calum
Love the whole project so far Kent. The Paddle pop sticks/matches idea is a great one for the floor/ bench.

Kahunaminor
Thanks guys, First effort at a base, so probably over engineered a bit. Photo frame with craft sticks around the border to build a flush interior edge. Craft stick supports in each corner. Monte Marte 24 hour air dry clay (terracotta because it's closer to desert colour) rolled to within an inch of its life (with talcum powder to negate sticking) to form a thin covering over the entire insert. Secured with white glue and trapped underneath the photo frame edges. Items placed and tyre marks gently added. The wooden walkway has been gloss coated, oil washed the Promodeller wash followed by Ultra Matte Varnish. I have some sand from the kids sandpit and some commercial stuff for rocks etc. now to leave it for 24 hours plus to dry: Regards,
