Plumbum
I am starting my C-130E Hercules using the Minicraft 1/144 C-130B kit. It has all the plastic for both versions. I am modeling a Hercules from the early '70s when my older brother was a maintainer of a "flock" of C-130Es at Forbes AFB from '70 to '74 So I will be going with the SEA camouflage and FB tail code. I don't know of any after market markings for that specific unit but I have lots of spare decals and it can't be too hard to cob up the basic markings. No interior detailing, just a couple of seats in the cockpit. I have the cargo bay painted up and will leave the cargo door and ramp open.---John C130 Forbes 8 by jvandeu53, on Flickr C130 Forbes 8 by jvandeu53, on Flickr Herk 1 by jvandeu53, on Flickr OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr Herk 9 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I just assembled the wings. Next is the engines and props. I still have to find a good picture of the dome on the upper forward fuselage so I can scratch build one.---John Herk 10 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I just added the SKE dome to the fuselage top. I made it from a piece of sprue, large sprue, almost 1/4" diameter from an Airfix F-86F kit.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
The wings, stabs and beaver tail are all assembled. I puttied the gap between the wings and fuselage.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr

Plumbum
The wing navigation lights are installed and I have the wing to fuselage seam all sanded up.I am going to work on painting the props then mask the air frame and start the SEA camouflage.---John Herk 16 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Romeo Alpha Yankee
Are the wing nav lights included in the kit? Would not have thought so fo one so small considering no 1/72 kits include them?

Plumbum
I am changing schemes, having a hard time with decals for Forbes SEA camo bird and am tired of holding up my progress on other projects so I am going with Draw Decals for Proud Gray C-130E of the Arkansas ANG. I will be using Tamiya AS-7 for the overall gray paint. You can see it below as I painted the rear door already, looks close to me.---John Herk 18 by jvandeu53, on Flickr

Plumbum
New subject, Arkansas ANG C-130E. I will be ordering Draw Decals, I believe this particular plane is included in the decals.---John Arkansas ANG C-130 37847 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I have painted the exhaust area behind the jet exhausts and glued the cargo door in the open position.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I have the wheels and cargo ramp on. It teetered a bit, guess I didn't put enough weight in the nose, so I added weight, modeling clay, to each of the engine nacelles. It's better but can't tail sit anyways, ramp will stop it.---John Herk 24 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Robin
Hi John. Very nice job on the Herk. In order to overcome the 'tail-sitting', if the cargo bay is open, would it be possible to scratch build a cargo pallet and load, and glue it at the front of the cargo bay. Robin. Plumbum
I am as far as I can go with construction, I am now waiting on the decals. After it's decaled I can add the antenna masts to the fuselage and string the antennas.---John Herk 25 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I have the Draw decals and have started using them. They are NOT easy to use and VERY easy to screw up, not for the faint at heart. The sheet is one big decal so you have to trim each decal closely. They also fold and tear easily and DON'T try applying long strips, it's a nightmare. The walkway decals are worthless, I am using the Minicraft kit ones, much easier and less stressful. They sorta look nice but to me seem to shiny and silver a bit. Oh well live and learn. Just a few more sessions and I am done and can add the antenna and antenna wires.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
