I've been digging about something similar and THIS may help. Colour photos of the plane with a decent shot of the logo.

It certainly looks a lot like this as @Hub Plott suggests

th?id=OIP.inG9un2SfWESdP5N9zwFlQHaEF&pid

Looking at images on the other pages in that article the image seems to be two triangles point to point with a curved 'tail' dropping from the centre. Any ideas??

I have reached out to the gentleman that wrote the article linked above and have asked him if he knows what the logo is.

Are we talking about the Pennzoil logo or the tiny thing below? I do not think the tiny thing it is a sponsor logo as it is tiny and it  appears only on the starbord side if you look at these port side pictures here:

Maybe this can help: ".. the National Air and Space Museum Archives does have photos in the National Air Races Negatives Collection (Acc. No. XXXX-0555)! ":

The yellow oval below the Kendall red circle, I also believe it is a pennzoil logo

Starting to think we will never see the "A". This was quite different as the "A" did not have the ventral stake beneath the rear fuselage. Other small differences as well. Shame as it will require some work to backdate to an "A"
