Second AFV 1/48 Tamiya Russian Armored Car BA-64B

Recommended Posts

Having just completed my first AFV :  the Komatsu G40 Buldozer I decided that I liked the slightly odd, almost futuristic shapes of some of the armoured cars such as this one, it wasn't until I'd read up on them that I realised that the design was based/influenced on another AFV that's in my little stash the 1/72 Dragon  Sd.Kfz.260 Kleine Panzerfunkwagen (love the name!)

The following comes from the instructions:

"The BA-64B was the later development of the original BA64, based on the 1943's GAZ-67, it's widened front and rear track improved stability... It was produced between 1943 and 1946 and served as a transport vehicle in armoured divisions, whose soldiers gave it the nickname "Bobik" . After the War some BA-64Bs were supplied to Eastern European countries and used into the 1950s."

I've made a start on it this morning and am looking forward to getting stuck in!

This is the photo of the chassis of the armoured car showing the first parts assembled:

I deliberately left some sprue attached so that I've got something safe to hold whilst painting, etc. (advice from Mr P)

Progress will depend on all the other things I've got to do atm...

nice start... looking forward to more of the build

Thanks rob. As a total non mechanical person just doing that bit confused the heck out of me...  hopefully by the time I've built a few I might just understand vehicles...:)

A little more progress today: I got on and painted the chassis Humbrol Army Green and give it a wash of Revell's Gunship Grey

I managed to cut out the upper and lower sections of the shell without incident and then glued them together adding the doors and front flap:

I was instructed in the gentle 'art of the thumbnail' to smooth over the joins and reduce the need for filling (my worst nightmare)

A little more progress this morning - chassis dry-brushed with a mix of Humbrol Army Green, white and a small amount of yellow, will paint engine block black later:

I also managed to glue the mud guards in place, realising just after that I should have fitted the lamps first (Ooops!) :(

love the work on the chassis... I have just bought another wheeled vehicle. When I build that one I think I will do it more modular (the Quad I am doing had the interior painted but all the exterior was built together before I painted (or rather before I will paint it as I am on the limber & gun at the moment)...

PS can I marry Mr Stix when you are done with him? need an "in-house" modelling expert....

Cheers Rob, I've been attempting to devise a 'time-share' so I can hire him out...  but I'd miss him too much:inlove:  and he'd be too expensive!

Not much progress this weekend, loads of  house tasks to do.

As I said not much progress, just a spot of painting, following Stix's instructions concerning thin layers and extreme dry brushing, plus washes and targeted washes it all takes time...

I painted the engine parts anthracite with a dry brush of gun metal:

Wheel centres in green with dry brush of light green (white, green and a touch of yellow) with a targeted Anthracite wash. The tyres still not finished more layers of Anthracite needed:

Hopefully I'll be able to get more done next weekend :)

Not as much progress as I'd hoped this weekend, just managed to put the lights in place on the front fender:

....and light on the rear fender

Plus another coat of Anthracite on the tires:

All the parts done so far, hopefully next week will be more productive!

Many thanks, Richard - annoyed that I haven't had enough spare time to get on with it!

This weekend I got around to putting  some washes on and I  then dry-brushed the shell and turret: - I'd painted the body first with Army Green 102 Humbrol The washes were an overall Grey, then a targeted Anthracite wash around the folds/seams. The dry brushing was with a mixture of Army Green, White and Yellow.

I then added some dirt wash on the tyres and tools painted with Revell's Anthracite:

I tried doing a bit of work on the figure - seams removed and glued together - I've added filler since as he's not cooperated as much as I'd hoped!

The details are beginning to pop out now and come to life. I always think that the figures are the worst part of 1/48th Tamiya kits. They're often under scale.

John.

Thanks John. It didn't help that I couldn't quite work out how his arms fitted, very strange position... I gave him a coat of anthracite and had to add more filler, but he's still being a bit annoying! - reassuring to know that information!

Lovely job there Mrs Stix, just started doing weathering myself, regarding measurements of your 1:48 guy, you could measure Mr Stix, head, arms, legs, body, then head to bottom of feet,  divide each part by 48 and you could see what your guys dimensions are ;)

Not a good idea she might end up sending him back

Might be safer to Google "Human proportions for artists" - images, loads out there

Like where you're going with your car

I raised this on another thread and someone replied that we were all different heights, but the fact is that some of the Tamiya figures are under scale, nearer to 1/50th. They're not just short in height but proportionately all round.

Sorry for hijacking you thread Mrs.P.

I hope Mrs. Stix doesn't treat Stix to some filler and filed seams, sounds rather drastic

Thanks Gremlin, I think Stix has quite enough filler and his seams need more than filing...:lol:

No problem John, Stix will hopefully not notice this and get upset (hum! ) by the comments... I was just meaning the way the figure seems to be designed.
