Pappy
G'day people, My other F-16 is getting close to painting so I though I may have enough time for another F-16. This one was already started, so I submitted the already built work to the mods to make sure I would be okay to participate with this one. Approval granted so on with the show. I have already completed the cockpit and some assembly of the upper fuselage. The cockpit is the one from the kit with the addition of some hoses The cockpit sidewalls painted up and some detail work added to the rear instrument coaming cheers, Pappy

I mostly used acrylics, I don't have any loyalty to any particular brand, I have used most of them and they are all much of a muchness. I usually find that the best paint is the one that looks right. I used to get really hung up about getting the correct FS nuber etc, then I realised that after a wash, drybrush, filter etc the end hue had changed so much that the original colour was no longer the same.I tend to start darker as most weathering seems to lighten the original hue. 54 minutes ago, trickyrich said: welcome with your second build Pappy, really nice work on the cockpit! Pappy
G'day people, I have given the rear cockpit bulkhead some attention as well as it was looking a little 'plane' (sorry couldn't help it), so some plastic strip was used in anger, Then some wire Then painted Just about ready to close up the fuselage now, cheers, Pappy
Erik Leijdens
Looking great Pappy. Great scratching, I must buy me some styrene too. I was wondering, the "lines"(don't know how to name it) one each side of the cockpit on the fuselage on which the canopy closes, is a distinct detail on F-16's. Has Kinetic molded this or is it scratch work too? Going to save your pictures to my hard drive, have a Hasegawa D model in the pipeline too.. I think that the line features you are talking about are meant to represent the inflatable cockpit pressurization seal that runs arpound the canopy sill. The seal is included there on the horizontal part of the kit cockpit sill. The issue is that the seal should extend up and around the edge of the aft bulkhead. The kit moulded seal just stops at the base of the aft bulkhead, and I would probably have obliterated it fixing up the seam on the aft bulkhead in any case. Instead of saving my pictures to your HD (which is flattering of course) why don't you do a 'net search for some aft bulkhead pictures of the real thing, there are plenty around. This way you are working from an accurate reference, rather than my version of it. I have not added every nut and bolt, so there may be details I have omitted or overlooked, cheers, Pappy
trickyrich
I'm really impressed with your work Pappy, the details you've done look awesome. Whether there 100% correct or not really isn't the point, the fact they look "right" is really what you're after, well done. If I was building a two seater I'd definitely be stealing your ideas! modelling minion
Excellent work Pappy, an extremely convincing cockpit and very nicely weathered. Still not revealing your choice of subject? Craig.

Still not revealing your choice of subject? Craig. Nup! G'day people, I have the fuselage together now. Dry fitting the intake and undercarriage bay assembly shows the fit to be quite good with some careful test fitting and sanding here and there The gear bays were looking a tad empty. They have more detail than Hasegawa's but the gear bays are quite busy on the Viper. I intended to use an Aires resin gear bay set but the main gear bay was too short and a little too narrow to fit. I reckon they just used the part designed for Hasegawa and labelled it suitable for Kinetic/Tamiya - it isn't. The nose gear bay fits well though. I will add some more detail to the main gear bays the old fashioned way. cheers, Pappy Edited January 17, 2017 by Pappy
trickyrich
really nice detailing of the wheel well, the nose bay from being quite bare is now nice and busy, well done!
Erik Leijdens
Great looking wheelbays! The Hasegawa bays are indeed even sparser in detail. Erik
Pappy
G'day people, I have finished with the wheel bays for now, although I may add a few more lines once all the undercarriage is installed. The exhaust innards have also been painted up and installed cheers, Pappy

Pappy
G'day people, I manged to get a little more done today. I spent some time painting the kit wheels, I am in two minds about using them. Kinetic's approach to wheels is to mould the hub as a single piece and the tyre sections are supplied as two halves which close around the hub. I am not a fan as although this means the hub can be painted separately to ensure a clean demarcation line (in theory) the fit is not always great and can be a little gappy, which means some filler will be required, so the advantage is now moot. Worse, Kientic do not supply any tread detail at all, and even if they did, the chances are that this would be lost due while eliminating the seam. I don't want to buy more resin so i will probably just use the kit wheels. The hub detail on the other hand is very well executed. Following the wheels, I spent the remainder of the day painting up some resin seats. The ejection seats have changed their appearance slightly on the later blocks (and as block upgrades were carried out) and many seats now sport black upper sections for NVG compatibility. Further, the fixed pitot probes on top of the head box of the earlier configuration have now been replaced with stowed pitot probes that extend in the event of an ejection. The kit seats represent an earlier configuration and I find that the Kinetic seats have brilliant detail but are very tricky to fit together. This is partially due to the assembly design, and also partly due to the location of the sprue attachment points. In any case, I opted for resin, as all I had to do was cut off a casting block and I was at the painting stage. Well nearly, test fitting revealed that the lower seat sides were a very tight fit into the Kinetic cockpit. As this detail would not be visible, I gave the sides some quick sanding with a coarse sanding stick which seemed to do the trick. I had a blast doing this, this was a fun job! The seat backs are not visible when installed as there is a sheet of metal that is part of the frame that the seat is installed into. I think I will try and modify the kit part to work with the resin seats The seats dry fitted to make sure the paint will not interfere with the fit and just because cheers, Pappy Edited February 11, 2017 by Pappy
