Eligibility or the GB rules themselves? The eligibility rules are quite basic and to the point at the start of the idea but do evolve a wee bit as it goes and as questions are asked and answered. If it's something major then there will be a change in the first post. Rules posted in the main thread tend to get lost as the thread grows. The final eligibility rules are listed when the build starts, by that time generally everyone knows if there builds are ok or not. The best advice for those arriving late is to do what most hosts would say and that is just ask. We're always happy answer any question and can give a definitive answer there and then seeing as we are generally the one who came up with the GB idea in the first place. bianfuxia
OK cool, thanks. I did ask but wanted to avoid looking dopey if there is some obvious place where they are. I couldn't quite understand the eligibility criteria for this one. Anyway it seems that the Hammann destroyer, which escorted and helped the sinking Yorktown in the battle listed in the criteria and then was sunk too, is eligible. If so I look forward to joining in. thanks
Chewbacca
Forgive my ignorance of the general GB rules but are scratch builds allowed? My father served under Lord Louis Mountbatten in the HQ ship HMS BULOLO in 1945 in the Far East and was on board in September 1945 when Lord Louis accepted the Japanese surrender in Singapore. I've always promised myself that one day I should make a model of her in his memory, even though my "whole-ship" scratchbuilding skills are as yet untested. The hull might be interesting without any lines to work from! I wondered if perhaps this GB might be the catalyst. Details are pretty sketchy but I've managed to cobble together a range of photos. One example is this one: http://www.navyphotos.co.uk/Combined ops assault and landing ships/images/bulolo2b.jpg which shows her festooned with comms aerials and which I think was her SEA configuration. I won't be offended if someone says it has to start from a kit.

For GB's I host I'm pretty much happy to see any type of model built short of a SnapTight one. From the photo she looks like a challenging build but I'm sure their will be plenty on members who will be able to help you and provide some advice. So welcome aboard as the say. Chewbacca
Okay thanks. So I guess my challenge over the next 3 months is to start drawing up some plans. If I can create them in CAD, I might have a look at 3D printing the hull.

Rabbit Leader
Rich, Just checking - would a Qantas ‘Double Sunrise’ Catalina qualify within these GB rules? It’ll have roundels and wartime colours but British Civil registrations. Still a long way from even considering this build, but just thought I’d ask to see where this particular subject stood. Cheers.. Dave.
trickyrich
That's an interesting one, I really don't see why not. From what I have read it was crewed by RAAF personnel and carried mail and 3 passengers, which included some important VIP's. Flying in wartime colours it would have been considered a military aircraft by the Japanese and shot down if see. That alone I feel would make it qualify, plus who wouldn't want to see a Catalina in the build! So as far as I'm concerned its ok.
Rabbit Leader
Thanks Rich. I’ve got the 1/72 Academy kit as well as the 1/48th Monogram monster... with Qantas decals in both scales. I agree that they most certainly would have been shot at, however (thankfully) seemed to escape the enemies eyes. Qantas’ C Class Empire Flying Boats did not fair so well being attacked by the Japanese at the outbreak and early stages of the Pacific war. Cheers.. Dave you could always go the mother of all Catalina's, the HPH 1/32nd monster! I think the wing span is only 39".

trickyrich
no worries welcome aboard, we don't need an offical list now, so just pop up a thread when she starts and start having some fun.
Enzo the Magnificent
I have three choices for this GB, but reading back on the first post I think two of them would be ineligible. I don't have any second world war Japanese aircraft in my collection, so I was planning to build a Nakajima B5N2, Mitsubishi J2M2 and Kawasaki Ki-61. However the last two were land based aircraft. Eligible or not? The B5N2 would be using the Airfix kit OOB with the second marking option of a 553 Kokutai torpedo bomber.
trickyrich
if the aircraft were based west of PNG then they would fall into the SEA section, other wise they'd need to be career based and used at Midway or Coral Sea.
Enzo the Magnificent
The Jack and Tony were land based in Japan, so they are not eligible. The Kate I had in mind was carrier based but was later in the war than Coral Sea or Midway. However, I have decals for a Midway Kate, so that's a Ooh! How about an Australian Vengeance based in New Guinea? That sounds like fun...
trickyrich
An Aussie Vengeance, now you're talking!! You could alway do a Zero or two? Doesn't Airfix do a nice one of those now?

Enzo the Magnificent
I can't find any suitable marking schemes for a Zero that reach out and grab me. But I have found a nice looking Aichi D3A1 "Val". I always wanted to build the Airfix kit back in the day 'cos it looked so wonderfully retro. I think I'll have a go at building the Fujimi kit though, if I can find one. My GB builds are rapidly getting out of hand...
