Airfix Dambuster - 1/72 Avro Lancaster B.III

Recommended Posts

I just caught up with this Tom.

My apologies for being so very late for the show.

It has made a very pleasant read; Your Foil work is superb! I love the map pockets and riveted flooring. The turret detail is outstanding and the home made 1/72 ammunition belts just mind boggling :o!

Some really great banter too, I liked Benedikt's photos and insights into the dams, then and now.

I am very sorry to hear about your mum; my sincere condolences to you and your family.

I'm glad I got here before the fuselage is buttoned up, and before engines and undercarriage.

I feel there's a great deal of modelling goodness yet to look forward to here in your thread Tom :).

Great stuff :thumbsup2:

Best regards

Second that.  Call me old fashioned but I just think that oil over a Klear coat works so well; and I pray in evidence the fine work of Mr Tomoshenko........and wth Sansodor you seem to be able to play about with it almost endlessly without it lifting or reacting with the Klear.  I have invested in some of the Mig Oilbrushers as a neat and convenient (albeit not cheap) alternative to tube's of oil paint tho'

Agreed again :) I tend to sue Tamiya Nato black - which is said to be a lighter black; but I've found that I like the look better in 1/72 if I add a few drops of white to lighten it even more - and I'm hopeful (well guessing really) that a pure black wash might show up against it.....or it might not.....

I got one too.  It's Tony's fault.  Mine makes a nice whirring noise too.  Can't think what I need it for so I'm relying on you to think of something to justify it Tom.........

Hmmm.  But I've got some of the quicker curing RTV (cures in a couple of hours allegedly) so I don't need it.  Do I?  Has 'need' actually got anything to do with it?

I actually got the idea for the Sansodor off yourself and some other modellers. As you say it's good stuff, none smelly and quite forgiving.

Nato black with added white followed up with a black wash :hmmm:Good tip, I likes that. Reckon that would look better.

Ah yes Mr Tony AKA The Baron. A lot to answer for that chap, making me buy stuff and giving me bad ideas!

The silicon stuff .. yes you need it Steve...just a few clicks away on Amazon or Evilbay, or a quick stroll to your local art shop. Go on you know you want to...

Thanks for the kind words Tony. I finished off the other window tonight. A few piccies to follow tomorrow, but I've got some nice lamb chops, Jersey Royal spuds and Evesham asparagus to cook. Oh yeh, as you've all gathered by now I'm quite bonkers and started up another WIP in the Made in Britain GB:

Great internals Tomo, very impressive. I must have a go at some of those techniques...

You've bought a bead lathe too? Must resist, must resist.

Egad I'm agog Tomo!

Just caught up with the last couple of pages here and totally  - I mean totally -  blown away by the quality and depth of detail you've achieved around the interior regions.

Magnificent workmanship.

I say. A lathe? And now Steve has one too? Practically an owner's club forming.:D I wish you many happy rotations with it!

Salutations,

Tony

That lathe looks interesting. What make is it please? What can it do?

It's a mini bead lathe designed for arts and crafts, and quite literally as the name suggests, small wooden beads. Obviously it has much potential for us fiddlers of plastic, although I have yet to bust its cherry. Type "mini bead lathe" into evilbay or Amazon and you'll get plenty of hits.

Resistance is futile Ced. Give in. We know it, you know it, it is your destiny....while you're at it check out a load of other "must have essential" accessories too...

A little post script, I forgot to mention the method for highlighting the floor rivets in the black area. This involved scraping the silver bits from one of those silver pencils on to a piece of paper, then brushing them into the rivets. Not rocket science, but is the only way to bring them out.

Next up was to get the final internal bits and bobs in place. Several eons ago on this thread I made up the camera housing and camera, bombing computer and frame, and the bomb sighting mechanism. The latter – after painstakingly scratch-building – I have consigned to the spares box because it was not used, being substituted by the famous wooden wishbone aiming sight (although according to one poster on here even this may not have been used, and a perfectly plausible proposition it is too).

As for the camera, well this is in the spares too because this area was used to house one of the Aldis spotlights used to calculate the aircraft’s height. However, I have decided to take some artistic licence and left the frame in. Partly cos I like it and went through the trouble of making it; but also cos I assume they would have been built to a similar spec as to not arouse suspicion, then the camera would simply have been left out. OK that’s my cop out and I’m sticking to it. Ditto the bomb computer. Most likely this would have been left out too to save weight and avoid it falling into enemy hands, but I’m leaving it in for this one.

IMG_1940.jpg

I also added a parachute housing and a little parachute from Milliput. Again most of this stuff won’t be seen but at least we know it’s there, and I will continue to annoyingly remind you. I do need to connect up a little cable to the bomb computer, but will do that later as I am oh so tired of Lancaster interiors for the moment.

Here it is glued in place. Not as straightforward as it ought to be but more on that later. In the meantime I understand that it is unlikely that maps and other mission material would have been left lying around for such a sensitive mission, or any mission for that matter. Again I am blagging it a little and opting for some artistic license , and assuming the crew had prepped the aircraft, then popped outside for one last photo or briefing. OK unlikely but remotely plausible so another cop out for me I reckon.

And a closer piccie of the other side. A word of note on the transparencies for the windows. They are a good fit. Very well in fact but quite tight. Dry-fitting is recommended, as is a little judicious sanding of the apertures to account for paint.

Now at last I can get the halves glued together.

I hope that wasn't a freudian slip of mine.........I noticed it when Tom quoted my post - but kept my head down and hoped I'd got away with it..............should have known......

Brief update. It is now zipped up. I must say it is a bit of a mixed bag though. I meant to say earlier about the fuselage fit being not as straightforward as one would expect. It is good in parts and iffy in others. Overall good, but some warping was evident. I mentioned Ced’s build earlier, and he like some other folk have experienced similar troubles. Nothing insurmountable, but you have to clamp and glue in stages: Ced’s build for reference (and lovingly spiced with double entendres fnaar fnarr)

Mine below. The front end is good fortunately.

The rear spine is okay.

IMG_1950.jpg

But the underside not so good. Quite menacing step. Seriously it was hell of a lot worse before clamping and holding in place while the glue set.

Okay out with the gloop. More later.

Having watched much excellence on the 1/72 Hawker Fury thread, I found the Lancaster thread, and was getting all excited catching up, then it all stopped back in July last year ........... then you two popped up!

Do we know what's occurring with the Lancaster?

Cheers

He’s not here yet boys. Someone pop and get some beers. :christmas:

Ok, then for me;  well:  "Ein kühles Blondes" of course. So a Warsteiner, Krombacher or Veltins would be nice from, where I grew up. On the other hand a Pinkus Müller, Heiniken, Grolsch would do also great as a Budweiser or Pilsener Urquell. But please no dark one anyway for me.  Chips,  if not german "Pommes", then please:

Really great!

Hope  Mr. Tomoshenko arrives back soon for further progress. Otherwise only this:

(By the way one sentence or two: This a dutch band with a song of the early eightees. I grew up with it as a party song and it still remains today as this one here. Neither a Nazi one nor a socialist one!  It's based on the " Song of cider" dealing with the harvesting people. So my apologies for some videos I saw of the Bots song with Wehrmacht  stuff. It really has nothing to do with Hitler as like as the Stalin stuff!!)

Another celtic one with english subtitels:

Cheers (Prost)

Ps: This song is predestinded to be misused by anyone with bad intentions, I think;  so take care.
