Hi all, I'm new to this website, as a fan of vulcans I have decided to build a avro Vulcan from airfix, but here's the catch, this is my first airfix kit, I have no model filler or sand paper, and we're I live it's extremely hard to get all things model related

wish me luck!

im a bit confused, how is it that the Vulcan has a blue roundle instead of a slightly pink one?

I can't tell from the photo if she's a B. 1, quite a few, if not all, of these were delivered with "normal" national markings rather than pale anti-flash colours.

Darth Vader, I can't do that were I live, I can only get it shipped which would cost soooo much money, but thanks for the advise

Can you get to Bedford?  If so Goldngs  on the High Street can supply your modelling needs.

I can try, I'm not sure if I can make it to Bedford, but thanks for the advise I'm getting in my flight soon, back to England

thanks again for the help

Sorry, I thnk your reply to Crossofiron came in while I was typing my last, so I didn't realize that you're not in the UK.

If you have friends or family going out from the UK at any time can they carry sundries out as merchandise in baggage?  Paints and solvents might be a problem but abrasives, accessories and (some) fillers ought not to be a problem, but check with the relevant Customs authorities.

Milliput, the filler most likely to be of use to you, is widely used in industry. It may be worthwhile e-mailing the company to see if there are any outlets in Dubai. Failing that they may be willing to supply you direct and at a sensible postage rate if you explain your situation. Sand paper and/or wet and dry should be easy enough to source when you are over here, Motor part shops, hardware stores, B&Q etc.

That's for your reply stever, I'm in the uk at the moment so I'll be taking a lot back home with me, I've just bought another Vulcan, it seems that space in the suite case might be a problem!

Sorry Harry, I missed your reply yesterday: "festive" chaos reigns here at present.

Please check your Vulcan before you leave the UK: a friend had a kit that suffered badly from warpage (looking at it the sprues had been removed roughly from the mould far too soon) and a check with the shop from whence it came found a further two (of four on the shelf) that suffered from similar, but less severe, damage.  Sounds like Hornby still haven't solved their quality control issues.

I've already checked, the vulcans fine but has a lot of grease on it, is this the molding machine? Anyway it came of easily so everything is ok, thanks for warning me, I should probably start on it when I get home, I'll make sure to keep you updated!

Good: I'd have been very unhappy for you being stuck in Dubai with a kit as unbuildable as my friend's was..

Yes, it'll be mould release agent.  Some warm soapy water will normally see that off, give the parts a quick rinse in clean water afterwards and let them air-dry.

i'll look forward to your progress reports: Gazza1's Work In Progress is a good source of information and inspiration, as is Vulcanicity's.  Gazza has even provided drawings for if you feel brave enough to model the bomb bay open (an option that Airfix seem to have started considering, then the bean counters said "No!!!").

I have a Vulcan lurking in the loft and a set of Olympus 200-series tailpipes (courtesy of Freightdog Models) just waiting for an opportunity.

As a retired customs officer, it just occurred to me that if you are taking Miliput back to Dubai with you, it might be as well to declare the stuff before getting on the plane. It will look highly suspicious to an x-ray machine!

It could be even worse if you were carrying it on your person. The follow up body search could be most unpleasant ("Bend over Blackadder")! :yikes:

Seriously though Harry, If you have a problem getting hold of the stuff PM me and I will send you a pack.

Thanks Martian, that's a good point, I'll make sure to do this, I've done it before but I must have been lucky! I recently bought back some poly cement in my suitcase and it was confiscated :( I don't want to make the same mistake with the poly cement as I'll sure be needing it for the Vulcan

Stever, why don't you make the Vulcan? You would have  a excellent time filling gaps with milliput :) I'm thinking of making a detailed bomb bay but I'm not sure, I'll think about it when the time comes :)

An excellent plan except for one tiny detail. Doubtless Stever is aware just how much filler and Airfix Vulcan that hasn't got any warpage problems can consume let alone the kit he has described to us!

My only excuse for not building the Vulcan is that I am presently uncertain as to its precise location in the loft.  In places the piles of boxes within which the kit boxes lurk are six feet tall.  In the new year I shall mount an expedition (kinky, I know) and seek it out.

Martian, you and I appear to have worked for the same firm at some point.  I was at Dover, then various offices in London, Luton & Bedford.  Thankfully (from my point of view) they and I have now parted company.

Yes I do know how much of any filler even a "good", or at least less-worse Airfix Vulcan can consume but funnily enough I don't see this is a deterrent, unlike the thousand screaming horrors of rescribing all the panel lines on the wretched thing!

I did the thousand screaming hours and then lost the will to live. The Vulcan has resided in my loft since then although with the advent of the new Victor, I may need to resurrect it.

I'm now doubting rescribing my Vulcan, it's the first time I've ever rescribed anything as well!

Stever, I don't blame you, my dads airfix kits are in the attic and we can't get to them, (or at least I don't want to) due to the amount of spiders calling it home 😬
