PlaStix
Well I am very late to the party but, having eventually finished my MTO GB diorama project, I'm hoping to get this kit started tomorrow morning - I gave the sprues a wash with warm soapy water this afternoon. It is going to have to be a quick OOB build so I get chance to finish it in time. The kit is the starter set version but I have cut away the section from the box with the paints, glue and brush because I'm not going to use them. Box art: This will be my first ever Mustang build and I'm really looking forward to it. Kind regards, Stix

PlaStix
Hi Giemme, Cookie and Ced. Thank you very much for your interest. I know most people here on Britmodeller will already be familiar with this kit but I wasn't until I opened the box yesterday that I was. So in case anyone else is like me here's what's included: The detail on the parts looks very nice: Clear parts: Decals - including shark mouth: Instructions: I have made a start this morning - basically getting the cockpit and wheel wells painted with a base coat - Humbrol 117 and 81 respectively: As I mentioned before I wasn't planning on making anything extra for this build but circumstances (the top half of the control column flying off into I don't know where when I tried to remove it from the sprues gate!) meant I had to fabricate a new column. The base is the same into which I drilled a 0.4mm hole and then the same into some round styrene rod. Through these I fitted some 0.4mm wire and this is the result: It's not an exact match but in the cockpit it won't be seen very much. More later I hope. Comments and suggestions welcome. GREG DESTEC
Hi Stix, the Airfix Mustang is a great little kit and mine went together very smoothly. One thing to watch though is the main undercarriage legs, which are a bit bendy once you get them off the sprue. The plastic on my example was a bit rubbery and I have read various similar comments on other builds of this kit. Nowt serious mind just a heads up. Enjoy the build! Cheers Greg

Cheers Greg Hi Greg and thank you for the advice - I will watch out for that. The plastic is a bit on the soft side on these new tool kits. Are there any photos of your Airfix Mustang? I had a quick search but I always find the search engine doesn't find everything. I've got your lovely shark mouth Revell Mustang III bookmarked but cannot spot your Airfix version. This morning I managed to get some more done - mostly painting interior detail and the wheels: I also got the IP decal fixed in place: As usual Airfix haven't attempted to make it look anywhere near realistic. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix
rob85
Dam it how is your work so neat!! "As usual airfix haven't attempted to make it look anywhere near realistic" a shame really as the rest of the kit is.... apart from the panel lines Rob
sean
It's a nice kit mate, although as Greg has mentioned, some have found that the undercarriage legs are a bit bandy, as indeed mine were on both the ones I built. Plus, the canopy being two separate parts, makes it a bit fiddly, but mine stuck nicely just by using lots of coats of Klear. Tidy work so far..... Carry on...... What with poor morning light, having to peer over the top of me specs and it being very early in the morning it's a miracle it's on the kit at all! 17 hours ago, sean said: It's a nice kit mate, although as Greg has mentioned, some have found that the undercarriage legs are a bit bandy, as indeed mine were on both the ones I built. Thank you for the comments and advice. Having now cut the legs off the sprues and assembled the undercarriage I can definitely see what you both mean. I'm currently trying to think of an unobtrusive way to strengthen them. And thank you too for the heads up about the canopy. 16 hours ago, GREG DESTEC said: Great work Stix. I had another search for your Airfix Mustang but without any luck. I got more done yesterday and this morning. Tamiya tape seatbelts added: Cockpit parts fitted to the base: ......and then test fitted on the side walls: Wheels parts assembled: You probably won't be able to see but I have drilled out the ends of the exhausts: A test fit of the wing parts - they seem pretty good: Then it was only a short while before the fuselage sides and wings were all assembled: When everything was together and I was cleaning the seams I realised that there was a bit missing just forward of the rear wheel well. Judging by the fact that I had painted over the area on the inside I either broke it off very early on or it wasn't moulded properly. Anyway the small white styrene piece seen in the photo below is where I have repaired the fault: I'm hoping to get some pre-shading on later. Comments and suggestions welcome. Rob Yeah, apart from the sprue gates being a bit big in places and me snapping and loosing the top half of the control column, it's been a fun build so far. Thank you. 12 hours ago, wimbledon99 said: Hi Nigel - yeah, yeah, yeah - I know I haven't got much time left to get this done!! Yesterday afternoon I managed to get most of the pre-shading done and I finished it this morning: I used Revell's Anthracite applied by a fine pointed brush. While waiting for the above to dry I got some painting done on some of the other parts: ......before applying a couple of coats of Revell's Light Grey to the undersides with a flat brush: Next I'm going to get some Humbrol 106, matt Ocean Grey, on the upper surfaces. GREG DESTEC
Coming along nicely Stix. I notice you use Revell and Humbrol paints. Is this because you have a preference for different shades by each manufacturer. I find Revell's paint to be very thick. However, their anthracite is a great scale black for 1/72 and 1/48. Great progress btw. Cheers Greg
Plasto
Looking good this far... I think everyone who's built this kit has snapped the control stick the sprue gate is plain nasty on that part. If your a 'purist' not that it matters either way really then I think the prop should be an aero products not a cuffed HS and I think it also had louveres fitted on the lower cowl. I think you can get the 'correct' prop out of the F-51 boxing. have fun.. Plasto
