'Kampfgruppe Tunesien' German Armour Diorama with an Fw190 A4 with working propeller - PS images added 04/01/17

Recommended Posts

When I was planning what I wanted to build for the MTO GB I was initially thinking of just making a couple of German tanks based in Tunisia. Then Jack G mentioned that the units did tend to fight in battlegroups and, in fact, that In early 1943 the eleven surviving tigers of 501 were allocated to 504.

From there the project grew and now includes two Tiger 1s, a Pz.III Ausf.L and an Fw.190 A4 in a small diorama which includes some figures.

The kits:

Kit 1: 1/48 Tamiya Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf.L as Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.L No.1 - 10th Panzer Division 1943

Paints: Humbrol, Revell and Citadel all applied by brush

Extras: Stretched sprue aerial and Tamiya stowage items from the Jerry Can Set.

RFI: Here

Kit 2: 1/48 AFV Club Tiger 1 as Panzerkampfwagen VI, Tiger I (E), SdKfz 181 No.131

Paints: Humbrol, Revell and Citadel all applied by brush

Extras: Skybow individual track links

RFI: Here

Kit 3: 1/48 Tamiya  Tiger 1 Initial production as Tiger 1, No.731, 'Norbert'

Paints: Humbrol, Revell and Citadel all applied by brush

Extras: Stretched sprue aerial and some Hauler PE

RFI: Here

Kit 4: 1/48 Tamiya Fw190 A3 (converted to an A4 ) as Fw 190 A-4 of II./JG 2 Flown by Hauptmann Dickfeld

Paints: Humbrol, Revell and Citadel all applied by brush

Extras: Aerial cable from EZ-line plus an Airfix propeller motor.

RFI: Here

Figures are all from the Tamiya Africa Corps and Tank Maintenance sets. The palm trees (such as they are) are from Woodlands Scenics and the tufts are by Army Painter.

As I have said in my other posts I thoroughly enjoyed building this diorama and a lot of that is down to the support and advice offered by Britmodeller members - so a big thank you to all those who contributed to my build thread, especially JackG and Sgt.Squarehead for the initial advice and ideas for the project.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hey Stix, that's great stuff. I do have a question about some of the pieces. The table and wooden ladder ... did you totally fabricate them from what you thought they should like or did you see something that looked like them in some photos somewhere ? Just curious. I have been around a lot of industrial settings and I could "create" a lot of my own stuff but I would prefer to copy pieces that actually existed whenever the time comes for me to try dioramas. Once again, GREAT WORK.                               Bob H.

31036515033_737732404b_c.jpgAs always, brilliant work with the hairy sticks Stix.

The composition is great as well.... crowded as it is, this near full frontal shot reminds me of a war movie poster and that's not a bad thing at all!

ps. Unfortunately, I didn't get your signature paintbrushes for Christmas, so I'm going to have to stick with the airbrush and make do.

Rearguards,

Badder

What an amazing finale, and a maintenance scene must surely be the best way to get three tanks

on such a small base, and an overflight as well, brilliantly done as always,

BillyD

Hi Billy and thank you very much! I must admit I did wonder whether it was wise to be trying to do so many so late on! Luckily I found bits of time here and there to get them finished. I hope you and yours are having a happy and restful holiday season.

Thank you very much Bob. I'm afraid I didn't make them - they are all included in the Tamiya German Tank Maintenance Crew set - as are all the other crates, tool boxes and shells. It really is a very good set and, I think, the Tamiya 1/48 sets often have more in than the 1/35 sets.

Exceptional stix, actually love this.... your best yet I would go as far to say. Nice pictures as well.

the base is a fine size so I rescind my comment in your WIP :)

Rob

Hi Rob and thank you for your kind comments. With regards the base size I have to say that, before I started to get everything onto the base, I did agree with your observations - it did look a title on the tight side.

I will reply to the next set of comments in the next post.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hi Badder. You are very knd as always. Your mention of a movie poster got me thinking about some ideas for Photoshopping some of these pictures - I will post a few soon.

With regards the brushes - I wouldn't worry too much - you already do excellent work with your airbrush!

Thanks for the info on the Tamiya tank crew extras. At some point I would love to see some photos that were taken around the air fields that actually show the extra equipment that was in use during maintenance operations. It would be really interesting for sure.                                         Bob H.

Hi Bob. No problem. Yes some photos of airfield equipment would be most useful.
