1/144 ACADEMY MINICRAFT BOEING B-47 STRATOJETS

The following 1/144 scale Academy Minicraft Boeing B-47 Stratojets were built by a fellow model club member Kevin and are displayed on a diorama base which I made and which represents the Y-shaped bomber hardstandings built at USAF bomber bases in Britain in the 1950s at such airfields as Alconbury, Chelveston, Stansted and Bruntingthorpe.

More cracking dio's Adey! This thread is pure inspiration - I want to go & dig my Stratojet out of the stash now! (but must behave & finish some stuff first!)

Keith

Hi Keith,

I started a Hasegawa B-47 last year but spent so much time scratchbuilding the cockpit that I became bored with it and put it away for another day.................

well that day has arrived, it has been decided that three of us in the model club are to produce a 1/72 B-47 each for the North Shields show in June................

so that is my next project decided then........................and of course each Stratojet will require a hardstanding......looks like I am going to be busy.............................

cheers, Adrian

REWORKED 1/72 CORGI Liberator GR III

My CORGI Liberator GR III as it was from the box .........festooned with ASV aerials in the nose, rear fuselage and wings and with undercarriage legs that are too long.

Photograph of the real Liberator that CORGI based their model on. Note the pitot aerial on the side of the nose that CORGI mistook for a 0.50 gun.

Also note the Boulton and Paul four gun rear turret.

Here is the fuselage after I dismantled it. Mad Max character in the nose with a 0.50 calibre in each hand and the two pilots wearing strange hats.

Incorrect tail turret for RAF version.

My reworked Liberator on display at South Shields. I have shortened the undercarriage legs..........this was not easy as they are very strong and hard castings to support the very heavy model. I have replaced the troublesome and ugly aerials with a retractable radar. And the tail turret has been changed to the correct type by replacing with a tail turret from an Airfix Halifax III.

I have happy childhood memories of the Suffolk coast in the 1960s and early 1970s. It was an exciting place for an aeroplane mad youngster like me......we only lived 10 miles from the American Air Force bases at Woodbridge and Bentwaters ......the sky was busy with Phantoms, Hercules, Jolly Green Giants, Kaman Huskies and all other USAF and visiting NATO aircraft and of course the Lightnings from Wattisham....................oh and the aerial crop sprayers too which would still have their sprayers going as they flew over our house.............great times............and coming home with Airfix models from F.W. Woolworths in Woodbridge or Felixstowe

It seems so quiet down there now...........................

cheers,  The Doctor

1/72 Reworked

CORGI RAF COASTAL COMMAND Vickers Wellington Mk 1c

resized_05d1212f-ac8c-41bb-9c2b-9d65b344

This is how my Wellington started off..............as a Malta based Mk VIII with a faired over front turret, ASV aerials and painted black.

I dismantled the fuselage and redetailed and repainted the interior and I replaced the faired over nose turret with a front turret from an old Airfix Wellington.

I then reassembled the model and then repainted it as a Dale based Polish crewed MK 1c of 304 Squadron in Coastal Command white scheme.

resized_e30f5859-3c65-4255-bae4-108e1d0f

This is the only photo I have of the dismantled CORGI Wellington. It shows the reworked crew positions.

Thats a top job that Wimpey !!

Bomb doors Open or closed, special, spinning props I love . . .

(Where do you get the windsock from, would be a requirement for my own diorama ?)

Ian

Hi Ian

the windsock is home-made........I rolled a piece of paper to the right shape, a sort of cone, then glued it and used fuse wire for the supports.

the mast is a length of round plastic rod and the supports are plastic square rod. A brass pin drilled into the base fits into a hole drilled in the diorama base.

My 1/72 FROG Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V in the markings of 10 Squadron at RAF Leeming depicted on a snowy dispersal.

This model was a Christmas present from my father in 1973 and has been redetailed and repainted over the intervening years.

The tail turret has been altered into a self-contained unit that rotates. The nose turret is converted from an Airfix Anson turret.

The bomb aiming window was rebuilt out of clear acetate.

Now we're talking...10 Sqn ! Pity it isn't the right 'plane though!....I made this kit in 1973 when I was working on 10 Sqn VC10s. They didn't have anything else in the village Post Office shop combo that day. Yours looks much, much better than the thing I threw together and painted in a day ! It was horrible ! I don't have any love for the Whitley. That chin and nose down attitude when flying and  add the wide chord wing and not a thing of beauty ! The tail plane is another area.

Needless to say you've done a good job there Adey ! Black  suits it.
