I found these photos in a file whilst looking for something else . . . . 518/40 -- With full glazing and I purposely didnt paint the roof over the Watch Room so as to throw light into the place. You must have been visiting airfields for quite some time like myself as both Elsham and Goxhill towers have gone now............. On Freeview 61 on the TV at the moment they are rerunning the Avengers series from the 1960s. The block is slowly spinning and in one peice. I couldn't believe what was happening. We hit it, shot off at 90 degrees towards the pavement and fence and drop behind that for the subway. We hit the kerb, the steering wheel whipped left and Willie's hands were thrown off the steering wheel and just missed the fence and back on the road again and back to speedboat mode. 2 seconds of mayhem and we couldn't stop laughing. That block was still in one piece , the pig lived and would have another go at to trying and kill us. Not my "car" BTW, not safe if moving at any speed. adey m Posted February 2, 2017 Author Share Posted February 2, 2017 (edited) Here you are barside, one of your favourite aircraft at RAF Binbrook in the summer of 1983 and what a lot of shades of green. I remember being allowed to wear Shirt-Sleeve Order but I don't remember No-Shirt Order ....................... I remember the summer of 1983 as being quite warm and there was a lot of air activity over Hull and East Yorkshire with Lightnings from Binbrook intercepting NATO fighters and RAF Germany aircraft coming in from the North Sea. A Lightning T.5 trainer of the Lightning Training Flight taxies onto the Aircraft Servicing Apron in front of the control tower at RAF Binbrook in 1983. The Lightnings in the background are parked on a disused runway. Winter time at RAF Binbrook on the Aircraft Servicing Platform as a Lightning F.6 is about to set off for a sortie and definately not No-Shirt Order weather. Binbrook was built on a plateau up on the Lincolnshire Wolds and was very exposed to icy cold winds coming off the North Sea. I took this photo of the control tower from the lighting mast visible behind the man with no shirt in the photo above. The extension built onto the tower at this side was the crash and fire trucks garage and rest room. The other side of Binbrook control tower showing the weather office and the airfield identification letters. The Aircraft Servicing Apron empty. The rear of Binbrook tower with the crash section on the left and the weather section ( I can't spell meteorological ) on the right. RAF Binbrook in its heyday during the 1960s. Firestreak missile armed Lightnings in the foreground and Meteors of 85 Squadron in the background. Yellow painted ground support equipment. Control tower painted white. Vehicles include two 1950s Bedford buses, crash trucks and various 1960s private cars including a Reliant three wheeler in front of the control tower................my favourite era........... 85 Squadron Meteor F.8 from RAF Binbrook taxies onto the apron at Scarborough. adey m Posted February 7, 2017 Author Share Posted February 7, 2017 A couple of lovely 1/72 EE Lightnings which I saw on display at one of the model shows. They were probably AIRFIX kits and were displayed on a commercially printed base which you may remember from earlier in this topic with a Lancaster II displayed on it. The top Lightning is an F.2 of 92 Squadron with the later checkerboard markings and the bottom one is an F.3 of 56 Squadron. The trolleys are B.W. MODELS white metal kits. One outfit bought one range another bought some other bits. They've ended up all over the place and some models don't seem to on the market at all. Ground equipment scratchbuilt from plastic card. Figures are N Gauge model railway figures which I have altered into air and ground crew. They have a small brass pin inserted into one foot which fits into predrillied holes in the base...............I just have to try and find them again when I get to a Show.................. And now for the real thing, one of four Vulcan B.2s on the Operational Readiness Platforms which were angled onto one end of the main runway at V-bomber bases. My CORGI Vulcan and my reworked 1/144 CORGI Nimrod MR1. Reworked 1/144 CORGI diecast Avro Vulcan B.2 with overflying reworked 1/144 CORGI Vickers Valiant B.1. Reworked 1/144 CORGI Handley Page Victor BS 2 with Blue Steel missile and 1/144 WELSH MODELS vacform Vickers Valiant B.1 in background. 1/144 CORGI V-bombers, Victor BS 2, Vulcan B2 and Valiant B1. 1/144 CORGI white Valiant B1, Vulcan B2, Victor BS 2 and WELSH MODELS silver Valiant B1. Note the Simon IG40 mobile elevating platform above the aircraft which supports the bomb winching gear which is raising bombs up into the bomb bay. Another view of the Simon IG40 elevating platform being used to raise bombs into the bomb bay of a Victor B1. The IG40 Simon hydraulic platform which was also used for aircraft maintenance..
