Very little progress to report, just some detail bits; 24" searchlight from North Star for the foremast; 36" searchlight again from North Star compared to the kit one. I'm not sure they're completely right for the era but they're better than the kit offerings which look too shallow; 8 of 12 down; Cheers Nick

Finishing off the small repetitive bits so I can finally get some paint on; Resin guns from North star with kit version for comparison, fiddly but worth it I think; And on to the boats. I always tell myself to do the do the boats first cos I hate doing them, and always end up doing them last!! The kit instructions show a different arrangement from the paint guide and anatomy of the ship, but I followed the book and worked out where they all go, but there are 2 32 foot cutters missing. They're the ones hanging on the lifeboat davits either side of the bridge/funnel and are very apparent on pics of the ship. Luckily, Shapeways do a set of RN ships boats including 2 cutters; And with the kit cutter, which goes midships with a whaler stacked on top, for comparison. Oars and rudders from WEM; Steam pinnaces and admirals barge with Eduard 'cabins' and roofs with grabrails attached; And the focastle attached to the main hull ready for painting ; Cheers Nick

Ray Thanks Ray, the boats are great although the undersides look a bit rough due to the layering process of the material creating little steps in what should be a smooth curve I think. They should be ok painted. Detail on the upper surface is great and better than the moulded cutter in the kit. Cheers Nick

I find it takes ages to get to this point but then comes together relatively quickly. Which means I need to start thinking about the base. Given that it's full hull I thought I'd go for a dockyard diorama but I've never done any real scratch building before. Worst case and it looks naff I can always just display the ship on a stand so no harm done. Working away a lot of late so little modelling time but plenty of free evening time, so inspired by this; I 'google earthed' Portsmouth dry dock 15 to get this; and using a type 45's length to scale everything came up with a CAD drawing of the dock; Now I've just got to work out how to build the thing!! Few weeks ago I have bought the same model and I will keep my eye on your as this gonna be my first ship I ever build. Enjoy Kris, it's a great kit. Put the Artworx decks on and started adding detail; WEM Focstle skylight hatches; WEM aft deck hatch covers; Midship turret access ladders; Upper deck engine ventilation hatch covers, winches and a start on the guns. These need filing down to accommodate the thickness of the wooden deck; General bow shot; Bridge with WEM wheelhouse. The WEM set is designed for the Zvesda kit and it seems a big big, hence the gap on the right. It needs some attention! And the turrets with centre sighting hoods & 12pdr's mounted; Thanks for looking Cheers Nick Edited July 22, 2017 by Nick Charnock Flickr pics

Michael M
Looks nice, but you have to add the con-rods between 12 pdr's and the main guns, they were linked. Kris get on with the Sherman and do some proper modelling here in the shipyard

Kris get on with the Sherman and do some proper modelling here in the shipyard Thanks Michael - I'd briefly thought about adding them a while ago but filed them in the 'too tricky' department and forgot about them. I may have to revisit that decision. There's couple of con rods between the engine telegraphs on the angled foremast legs and the foremast itself which I might add at the same time. Thanks again Cheers Nick
Michael M
That's good way of thinking, there's no such thing as impossible they're just more difficult. It's just like with all animals being equal and some of them being just more equal than the others Just can't wait to get my dock free of that nazi scrap, to put something closer to your project in it
