Procopius
I'm looking to make a model of my great-uncle's B-24H, which he flew on D-Day: There are no decals for any 734th BS/453rd BG aircraft, so I'm gonna have to improvise. Does anyone make squadron code or serial number decals in 1/72 for USAAF 8th Air Force bombers? How about for the Q on the tailplane? Am I going to have to get custom decals, which frighten and confuse me? (Beyond for the aircraft name, I mean.)
Stew Dapple
I can't find any after a brief search mate, Kits-World do a set of code letters but they are in grey for camouflaged Libs... the thought occurs; have you considered checking with one of the custom mask set makers to see how much a set would be? It could be a way forward... Edit - Techmod do some serial numbers Cheers, Stew
Procopius
Ugh, Techmod. I never fail to have problems with their decals. Custom masks, you say? Sounds scary!
Greenshirt
I had a set of custom masks made for a 1/72 Blackburn Shark, including the serials. It worked a treat and the cost was about that of a decal sheet. I could have gotten better value if I'd put more markings on the order, but just didn't have anything. Most difficult was ensuring the artwork was right. I had a photo, and knew the vertical dimension so the maker was able to do the artwork for me. We emailed back and forth until I said "yes" and used PayPal. That was in 2011, and unfortunately my notes don't have the contact info. In Canada if memory serves me. I found him here. Edit: Ad Astra Masks. Found it in my build thread of the Shark. Tim Edited December 12, 2016 by Greenshirt
John Laidlaw
Sadly, Ad Astra appear to have gone by the wayside - which is a shame, as the masks were great, and Ian's a good guy. If you wanted custom decals, you could try Fireball Modelworks (http://www.fireballmodelworks.com/) who can produce decals using artwork you supply. If you run out of options, I have a Silhouette Portrait cutter and a supply of low-tack vinyl masking material, and could cut masks for you.
72modeler
You could contact Kenny at his website- he makes excellent precut vinyl masks for codes, serials, and national insignia for all the major scales; if you don't see what you need, if you contact him, he can make masks for your application- very personable fellow and his products are very reasonable in price. (No, I don't get a commission or am affiliated with him- I have just used his masks and he has made some for my modeling projects.) Mike you can contact him at gatorsmask dot com

Thanks -- doesn't seem like they do lettering for NMF B-24s yet, though, which is what I believe Sky Chief was, based on the photo.
mungo1974
Vinyl masks or kits-world decals maybe just good old fashioned masking tape..or just piece them together from thin decal stripes, a E,8 & Q aren't hard to do once you've worked out the height and width of each letter... Edit : Or maybe Fantasy Printshop didn't they do some generic alphabet sheets in different colours/sizes?? Stew Dapple
Good call Mungo; Fantasy Printshop do make US Code Letters and numbers - Edward, if you click on the thumbnails it gives an indication of scale - e.g. 24" in 1/72... presumably it would be possible to work out from the picture the approximate size of the letters? Of course, that doesn't get you off the hook with the "Sky Chief" lettering... Cheers, Stew
