Airfix 1/72 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate"

Recommended Posts

G'day people,

This kit was begun over at ARC for the "Far out, far east" GB. It was not finished in time for that GB but I managed to complete during the KUTA IX GB here:

This model represents an aircraft from the the carrier "Shokaku" as part of the 2nd wave of bombers that attacked Hickam Army base during the attack on Pearl Harbour. The kit went together very easily and includes a very comprehensive cockpit OOB, although some additional PE embellishments were added. The kit decals were used and behaved flawlessly, although if I were to build it again, I would prefer to paint the fuselage band as positioning the decal resulted in wrinkles that required copious amounts of setting solution to eliminate.

The pics,

I wanted a more dynamic in-flight display so the main gear was posed mid-retraction, as if the aircraft had just launched from Skokaku

The eagle eyed among you would have noticed that the prop governor is missing. I had it three days ago but I cannot find it now :raincloud:  if anyone out there who has this kit and is building the second option (with the spinner), if you can spare part D18, I can give it a good home!

Edit, I found the guvernor

Thanks for looking,

cheers,

Pappy

Looks good.  Have this one to do, probably next but one.  Haven't decided on the scheme yet so I will look at it over the weekend and see if I will have the part spare.  I'll probably follow your idea of painting the fuselage band, good tip.

G'day Simon,

The fuselage band decal was opaque, so no issues with the underlying paint being visible, but eh issue was that the fuselage tapers. the decal is curved but when it is wrapped around, there were a  couple of folds that created wrinkles as they settled. Masking and painting will also be tricky due to the compound curves of the fuselage, but at least you will have the option to adjust the masking tape until it looks right.

G'day Simon,

I managed to find the prop governor so I do not need to find a replacement, but thank you for the offer,

Lovely build, in flight and crewed up, just the way I like them.

These newer Airfix kits are great, and you’ve done it the justice it deserves.

G'day Mart,

Thanks very much! I really like doing in-flight models, the subject just looks better that way (IMO) and Airfix keeps getting the value vs cost balance right with their new generation kits

Really nicely finished and displayed in flight.  The base is the cherry on the cake ! :goodjob:

Cheers BillyD,

It was a last minute thing. I basically found a graphic on the internets and printed that. It was cut out and placed onto a simple round base (bought from a hardware chain) and sandwiched under a piece of acrylic. The whole lot is held together by the machine screws. The simple brass rod was bent to suit being malleable enough to bend by hand but strong to retain its shape,
