HMS Upholder 1/350

Recommended Posts

Inspired by Claudius' excellent build and finish - I have sent off for one - should be here soon.

Then I got to thinking - it would look nice next to a model of the modern(ish) diesel HMS Upholder SSK - just for comparison.

I did it in 1/700 scale - scratchbuilding both models.........

.... so I'd like to do it in 1/350th

Then I thought - the Russian Kilo class looks a bit similar in outline - I wonder if it could be modified????

What's the opinion of the collective????

That is interesting indeed!!! New Upholder wasn't so big as well, after all.... You know, guys, if there is something I like it is the RN submarines names, given according to their class' letter... Those guys had to make a fantasy effort to find so many cool names with initials such as U, V, S, etc. But the result was amazing. It demonstrares how the English language is rich of unusual terms.

BTW, Venturer is my favorite!!! I decided to name my next sailboat so.

Fantastic job of a superb sub,......so sad that the crew perished during their last patrol before a well earned rest.

Cheers

PS- Well done with the blue finish too!

Claudius - may I ask a question??

What paint did you use for the topside colour on you magnificent model ???

I have Humbrol's Hu-48 'Mediterranean Blue' - but it looks too dark.

Yours has a distinct purple hue - which I think is correct.

If you have a match to Humrol paints it would be useful - I'm just on the finishing stages of my model.

Anyone else care to chip in regarding the top colour??

Thanks

Ken

I am just happy to help. Unfortunately right now I am away, as soon as I get back home I will be more precise. I used a Gunze or Tamiya acrylic paint because I thought it matched better. I need to check.. stay tuned!

Only the second time that I've ventured out from the AFV pages for a look around and this caught my eye. Nice job.

Incidentally, if you can lay you hands on a book called "Unbroken", it's a damned good read about one of this class operating in the Med written by the skipper. I read it about 60 years ago as a kid and was fascinated.

I have a copy of "Unbroken" and there's one comment in there that always makes me chuckle. It's when Unbroken is in dry dock after an argument with the Axis forces, one of her officers says " They should change her name from Unbroken to Badly Bent"
