My after Spit relaxing, Hurricanes Mk I Classic Airfitaleri

Recommended Posts

Oh CC I do love your threads. every time I feel like my models are a little overwhelming I pop on to BM to ease myself in again, skip joyfully through everyone’s lovely model work. then I come across one, two, three of your fabulous threads each with lots of kits inside. Like a totally bonkers Russian doll. Then my models seem slightly less daunting. Thank you for that. 🙌 excellent new gift too.

The hurries are looking splendid. All of them. 🤣😇😀

Thank you Tony !

That's one of the reason I shoose this one !! Thanks to @rob Lyttle for the pic !!

And I also found my target for the RNDFF !!

May be a pic of mine and the one of @Grey Beema side by side

I did'nt have the computer skill to do it, but there will be a BM'er to give it a try !!

Sincerely.

CC

I have 5 Hurricanes in the collection at the moment with one in the stash.  They represent 242 Sqn Hurricanes (Gardner & Cork) BoB, RNDFF Hurricane I Trop.(Charlton), 880 NAS Sea Hurricane (Cork), 800 NAS Sea Hurricane, both Op Pedestal (and lastly in the stash 213 Sqn Hurricane (Jeram).  I am on the hunt for a 1/48 Hurricane IIb to convert to a Sea Hurricane IIb for an Operation Torch cab.

If we can find someone with Photoshop skills I’m sure they can all be mustered together..

The Rhodesian Air Training Group got some fairly tired Hurricanes that were retired from the front line.

I found some good information on line somewhere, and info from someone who's Dad flew with them.

I'll see what I can find

I think that the spinner and nose cone zare painted red on this cab...

as other have said, I'd go with gloss red, this was the  bosses plane, prop spinner and first short nose panel.

handy having both sides.

For my operation Torch Sea Hurricane, I have a Revell (Hasegawa reboxing Hurricane Mk II) and the MDC conversion kit.

But now as Airfix is giving us all the specific parts in each Hurri boxing....

I'll see what's the best deal when I'll start my Torch serie...

Revell boxing is generally cheaper than the original Hasegawa one...

Now, I can't wait to see your collection...

Sincerely.

the Revell Rebox is a IIc 4 cannon wing,  the famous Torch Sea Hurricane are navalised mk.IIb (or the Canadian equivalent) 12 MG wing.

Not impossible to convert, but a lot easier to start with a B wing kit....

The Airfix kit is a Mk.I

Converting a Mk.I to a Mk.II is more work than redoing the Mk.IIc wing IMO

(I recently got some specific Evergreen styrene strip, 1mm x 2mm,  to do the conversion and will do at some point)

Note, 'with some modelling skill'  the spare Airfix underfuselage can be used on the Hase kit.  As every Airfix kit has 2, there are now plenty of Sea Hurricane conversions available ;)

This also has the advantage of using a part that is the right shape, and does have have seam line that to eradicate you need to eradicate all the fabric detail to do.

I need to document and post up my research on these subjects,  as the photos will explain so much more, if I can get the photos right!

What would be the best starting point in 1/48?

(There's a ML-KNIL opportunity on the table here...)

for ML-KNIL,  your best starting point is the Hasegawa IIB trop, which seems to be the 'commonest' Hase IIB,

though any boxing of their Hurricane with Mk.II nose and B wing will do.

see https://modelingmadness.com/splfeat/kr/has48b.htm

the other are Eagle Squadron and Croix De Lorriane boxings, though IIRC the ML-KNIL plane have the trop filter.  The Eagle Squadron boxing doesn't. (I hate Hase for this,  given their sub optimal decals,  lack of the trop filter is a major pain)

Anything else will require converting a C cannon wing to a A/B wing,  or converting a Mk.I to a Mk.II.

If you are not that obsessed,  you could just build a Mk.I as a Mk.II, and add the longer spinner,  who'll notice, it's only a Hurricane....

(I'm being cynical here, though there is a build online where a an Airfix mk.I was "converted" to a Mk.IV like this...https://imodeler.com/2018/01/hurricane-mk-iv/

"The MkIV had the later Merlin so was longer in the nose, however this is almost impossible to fix as an entire now nose is required, there was no simple ‘plug’ to lengthen it."  ....which is wrong...)

Hello Dears !!

Buzy day today, garden activities are marred by the storms... the second one is on right now !

The replacement of the cooker has been halted because I needed a special reinforced electric wire...

The one used until tomorrow is 30 years or so old..... I know now why we have had some electric shoks sometimes...

Well, yesterday, I started the 5th Hurricane !!

This one will be the RNDFF one !!

Is that pronounced "Haw-caw-ree-tayy", or is it more "Hawker-I-tees" ??

Should I be thinking more along the lines of a Flemish style of pronouncing?

Nah !! I've been first taught english with 'Murcan from Florida....

And to make things even worst, they were Ex- soldiers and most of them did one or two TDY in Nam...

Then I spent a lot of time with Irish peoples.... And peoples from down under... You know the land of Oz....

So let's go for Hawker-I-tees....

Nonetheless, you're right since my grand mother was from Ruyslede...

As a kid, I listen to her, speaking a meltpot of flemish, german and Charleroi Walonian...

When I was in Ireland, I've been frequently asked "Are you looking for your ancestors ???"

And I remember a pretty funny (for me) argument in Cosford museum years ago...:rofl2::rofl2:

At the time, I was speaking with South Africans !!

May be my anthem....

I'll show some pics of the Rhodesian Hurricane soon !!

Sincerely.

Thank you Rob,

So, strawberries are called fraises in french

Raspberries are Framboises,

Mulberries are mûres,

What I have are called Groseilles à maquereaux, it's tasty

French names are so weird sometimes...

It translate as berries for herings ????

Did'nt now that Herings and Mackerels get out of water and go pick up berries...

Thanks for the tips and the pic...

Sincerely.

After a quick research on the interweb,

It look like it is called Gooseberries....

So in french there are berries for herings and in english, these are for geese....

These botanist are even weirder than modellers...:christmas::dunce:

To stay in that same way...

Do you know a Twin Hurricane ??

IMG_20200627_001018

A bit more seriously, Yes, I can... sometimes...

Did you have had such a nightmare ???

IMG_20200626_215855

As the shaded canopies are not invented yet in 1940...

Is there a tip for get it transparent again ??

It was that way when I receive the box, I think that the sun took its toll...

I still have some other canopies, so I did'nt worry too much

But if one of you BMers has a tip...

Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

And Special hobby IP with Italeri decal...

It look good to me, after all, most of it will no longer be visible...

Tomorrow it's another evening work week.... :dunce:

So no more incantations to the Styrene goddess....😭😭

Have a great modelling time...

The yellowing of vacforrm canopies is due to age not the sun, and there is no known cure.  Snake-oil salesmen are missing an opportunity.

Thank you Graham !

Yep, a missed opportunity here, I will try something after all, I did'nt fear to be blocked on my kit...

I really hate this box art.   And they, again, fail to spot the that VY-R  had a red spinner with white stripes......

I suspect the Real Colors of WW2 book is to blame for that though.... and the only Bf110 unit doing this was Erprosbungs gruppe 210

I did wonder that Troy, the shark mouth of Zg76 struck a discordant note, though, accuracy aside, I reckon its a neat bit of boxart. Is this representative of an actual event involving 85 sqn & Eprb 210, or some other Luftwaffe unit?

Steve.

My mum used to make us Gooseberry pie when were holidayed at an old farmers cottage where they had grown wild, it was our job as kids to pick them, she would turn them into simply delicious pies baked in the old wood fired range. This would have been 55-60 years ago now & there would have been a mix of red & white (actually pale greenish) gooseberries. Try it sometime, let google be your cookbook.

The Hurricanes are coming along nicely. :)

Steve.

PS Does anyone know how I can get quotes from two pages into the one post?
