CC,

In 1/72 the only  accurate Corsairs are the ones by Tamiya, with the old Hasegawa kits also being very accurate for the versions they released- birdcage, -2, -1A, and -1D. Tamiya also did the same variants, and I have been hoping that they would keep going and do them all up to the AU-1, but so far, no cigar! If they did, it would be like a license to print money!  Italeri tried to get too many variants out of one set of molds for their later Corsairs, with the net result being none of them were accurate for the variant they were boxed as. I have been toying with how to do an F4U-1C, along with @Corsairfoxfouruncle, using in my case, a Tamiya kit and  scratchbuilding the 20mm cannon and putting in the correct case/link slots,,, a pretty easy conversion, actually, and I found an old Microscale decal sheet that has markings for -1C's!

Mike

FWIW, the old Hasegawa 1/72 Corsairs are actually very accurate, but have simplified cockpits and incorrect cockpit floors, which didn't appear until the F2G and F4U-4, and no belly bombing observation window on the birdcage and F4U-2; the wheel bays are too shallow, but are easy to fix.  and the prop hubs are undersized on all variants and lack the bolts. All boxings have the open flap step, which is only correct for the F4U-1D, I believe, but all can be made into nice models and  the Hasegawa kits are very cheap at vendors tables, except for the F4U-2 boxing, which had a radome, cooling air intake for the generator, and suppressed exhausts, which seems to in the same category as rocking horse poo!

Well the 1/48 offering is a bit better...

But not whithout issues... The belly of the HB -4 :frantic:, the wings of the HB -5 :deadhorse:

Now, when you look at the modifications I did .... A Corsair a year is a good rythm...

I tried to put the PW in the cowling With the the flap ring installed, and it get through easily...

So I glued the flap ring on the cowling and then, I'll thin the flaps and detail it, because the ring is really fragile...

IMG_20201022_205718

Now, Look at that beast of a Corsair !!

IMG_20201022_205945

I think that I'll finish a Corsair this year...

Then turn my attention on this old project of a XF4U... Almost done in fact...

Old Hobbycraft Corsairs are good enough for such a job...

A F4U-3 May be....

Why Maybe ???

I already planned it ....:banghead::banghead:

More to come soon...

Sincerely.

Yowzah! Your F4U-5 is coming along nicely, CC! The later Corsairs are much better represented in 1/48, for some reason. I think I recall somebody did a very nice XF4U-1 a while back, but I don't recall the scale; I have always wanted to do one in 1/72 as well as the XF4U-3, which looks pretty nasty with that big scoop and supercharger- surprised there  wasn't an aftermarket conversion for that one, to the best of my knowledge. What markings will your F4U-5 have?

Mike

Just in case you don't already have it...

Coooool !!!

Great Thanks Mike !!

My work is based mainly on 3 different books...

And a lot of pics !!

I will now see what I missed with these 2 threads...

So far, I only used an Hobbycraft Corsair and some parts not used in other builds...

2 Tamiya Corsairs for the conversion... Hum Quite expensive...

And No, I never found any conversion for these 2 rare birds in any scale...

The paint scheme will be a VC-3 bird but not the one of Bordelon

Sincerely.

Hello Gents !!

As I already told it in my Mustang's thread...It has been an evening for repairing my own goofs...

And I'm able to do some... Ahem...

See, taking notes that start by... Don't forget to.... And forgetting to read it....

:banghead::banghead:

Well, now, It's just a bit more difficult...

The trim tab actuator is not the same on the -5...

But I glued the rudder...

IMG_20201024_001942

Other than that, I did one of the switch panel...

IMG_20201023_221419

And it's now glued in due place..

IMG_20201024_001951

And the huuuuge radar pod is on its place...

Wing is engraved too...

IMG_20201024_002106

If you wonder about what will be the Hasegawa -5... Here's a teaser...

82777560_220675212267605_4001159320698880000_n

That's not obvious but it will also be a conversion... :evil_laugh::evil_laugh:

Of course, the Corsair club know what I mean...

Why so simple ???

Hey I also have had to do another job for my missus...

IMG_20201023_164054

Having your own tree implies such a :bangin: job....

And tomorrow, I'll paint the kitchen... Hey, that's a rest...

Have a great modelling week end... I will !!

Sincerely.

Definitely, completely, helplessly mad CC

Hello Dears !!

It's sad to have new tooled kits, with lots of details but searched by half blinded moles....

So, Saint Putty is here to help !!

There are no access panels on the -5 elevators...

IMG_20201025_232746

And no cut out in the flaps either...:mg:

Now, the Hasegawa radar pod is integrated on the HB wing !!

IMG_20201025_233047

The formation light has moved from the top to the bottom of the wing on the -5

It's done too !!

And the big beastie received one wing !!

IMG_20201025_235412

But once again...

In French, I use to say that in the word Ingénieur there's the word Génie.....

You CAN fold the wings, but if you elected not to fold it....

Enter Puttyman...

Well !!

Take care Gents and happy modelling !!

Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

Not a lot done today on my Corsair -5...

Just sanding a bit...

IMG_20201027_001617

For my defense my Lord, I prepared this !!

IMG_20201026_175127

Stuffed green pumpkins, with a load of pepperonis and meat and cheese and onions...

Everybody has licked their fingers !!

More to come soon...

Look Gents, I gave the kitchen a coat of fresh paint... Now I have the dining room to do...

You surely both know that sentence... " How, now that's the tools are here...."

Hello Dears,

I always tend to prefer a Corsair with 2 wings !!

It's far better that way !!

IMG_20201027_221616

Even with that enormous radar pod on the wing !!

More to come soon !!

Take care Gents !!

Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

Well, I'm now buzy with the flappery !!

IMG_20201101_012806

Meanwhile, I also drastically reduced the hump on the Minicraft -5 NL

IMG_20201101_013029

Far more realistic that way !!

Let's work on this awfull rudder now !!

More to come soon and thanks for the support Gents !!

Happy modelling sunday to all

IMG_20201101_210001

And glued it on the bottom of the elevator...

Another missing point from HB...

Take care Gents !!

See you later !!

Hey Hey !!

None of my distinguished Corsairologist colleagues seem to have fired up on my post of 10/24 !! :evil_laugh::evil_laugh:

Oh Sorry, I must explain this private joke...

When I was an Airshow rat... I was known as the Corsairologist, I think that the reason for this is self evident...

And my friend at the time being was nicknamed the Spitophiliac !!

Not necessary to mention that he was and still is found of Spifire !!

But that did'nt tell us what type of conversion it will be...

I think that the HB -5N will be finished in December !!

Nothing of what I've done is worth a Pic and I spent most of my time on my 2 future RFI !!

Take care Gents,

And Happy modelling !!

Sincerely.

Hello Dears,

Mumble mumble mumble...

Scond HB Corsair and same mistake !!

Next one I'll try to let the flaps raised and see what's going on...

Not very funny since parked Corsairs are usually flaps downed....

IMG_20201104_235227 IMG_20201104_235231

More to come soon !!

since you know I must fin.... Ok, I take my coat !!

Take care Gents !!

The F4U-5P, obviously. Look forward to seeing that.

Making great progress with the other Corsairs. Can't wait to see the finished - 5N. I'm building the Hasegawa - 5N, or was because it now sits in storage because I'm in the middle of a house move.

I'm building the Bordelon version without a matt black anti glare panel on the nose. How on Earth did that idea get started with such clear colour photos of it?

Anyway keep it up. I'm definitely a Corsairphiliac too.

Aaaand the winner is @noelh

Yep Sir, I'll turn the Hasegawa -5 reserve Sqdn in a F4U-5P !! Opened hatch and camera with its bracket seem a "De rigueur feature !!

House move, I wish you the best of courage... I moved far too much for my taste, and I hope that I'll move no more !!

Except if I win at the lottery...

And buy a house in Somersetshire...

Or Dorsetshire...

One more Corsairophiliac is great !!

Thanks for the kind words Noel !!

My last move too I hope short of a lottery win in which case I'll buy a large house overlooking Galway Bay with an annexe where I can build lots of Corsairs. 🤗

That sound great !! In a great and scenic place !!

I would like it too !!

@corsaircorp

CC,

Don't know if this will be useful, but I have attached a link to the F4U-5N restored by the Collings Foundation that shows many useful details, including the wheel bays. I think the struts, wheel bays, and interior surface of the gear doors were finished the same as the surrounding exterior color. Note that the inboard wall of each main gear bay had a zippered canvas access cover, you  might want to simulate with foil or tape. From the sources I have, the cover is either a greenish canvas color or O.D. You  or others might want to confirm this, as I have read some sources that state that the bays were sea blue and the inner surfaces of the doors were interior green. Collings is usually pretty accurate in their interior colors, but being a restored aircraft, you know how that goes! Looking good so far- just wish we had a decent F4U-5/5N in 1/72 scale!

Thanks a lot Mike !!

You're right at the time being, everything was Dark Sea blue, not only for the Corsairs, this painting was done in units, so when they fix something with a brand new part...

The AD-4N and the F3D-2 received the same painting.

I'll respray the wheel wells !

Today, I worked on flaps and ailerons and started detailling the cowling...

IMG_20201106_215000

And I also started the 2nd switchbox , the engine received some wiring too...

It start looking seriously like a Corsair !!

Bits by bits !!

Hello Dears,

Once again, the Hasegawa Corsair has been put on contribution !!

I cannot let it happen whithout a serious intervention !!

So, To hell the promises !!

There's now one more Corsair in the game !!:penguin:

IMG_20201108_213208 IMG_20201108_213228 IMG_20201108_213318

Hello Mr G,

No worries, the -5 have just a kind of armoured bucket, do not try to sit on (in) that whithout wearing a parachute...

And an armoured plate on the back, but the 2 parts are not linked.

In fact, the -5 is almost an entirely new plane with the shape of a Corsair.

There are lots of improvements in it...

You're too kind !!

When I saw the -5 with the tape to keep his nose in place...

It sparked in my distorted mind.... How did we call that ?? "Brain fart ??"

5 years and counting... of Corsairization....

Start a Corsair please, it will be fun !!:bandit:

Which one do you have, I think that you showed it but I don't remember...
