AMX Ghibli

Italian Airforce -

Kinetic 1/48

In an effort to do something again outside of this site's fantastic group builds, I started to dryfit Kinetics AMX effort. :)

The AMX is a relatively simple plane powerd by a  RR Spey engine. It was to supplement the complex strike Tornado in AMI service.

Lately it saw service in Afghanistan as recce and close air support aircraft, it is deployed again against ISIS at the moment. (at Trapani-Birgi in Sizily )

the kits plastic is surprisingly hard and brittle, at least the main fuselage parts, as some external stores sprues show a different, cheaper?,  molding  technology.

lots of parts!

IMG_7493_1_1_zpsdfk4woyf.jpg

seperate nose with very  different cannons for Italian and Brazilian AMX

the Italian one has the powerful, 6-barrel 20mm Vulcan gatling gun installed....(right nose parts, but on port side ;))

so far I am impressed with what I see :)

only few parts up until now, but many, many more to go !

hello everybody,

thanks for your interest,

yes Stephen, their strategy is not totally clear to me either... you get 2 front fuselages for Italian and Brazilian Airframes, and weapons you could use the AIM-9 and the recce pod without mods and maybe the GBU-12s.. (I actually think Italy uses Israeli made LGBs on their Ghiblis!)

and you get a lot of duplicated pars as well, like parts of the undercarriage, wheels, turbine, exhaust,........ you cant explain all that with ease of production and tooling imho...

whatever, we pay for that I guess ;)

back on topic:

I did some work on the wings, as i was most interested on how the flap and slats would look like!

a complicated build with lots of fiddly parts, 6 parts for the slat alone, the wing as shown here is made up of 12 in total!

looks quite o when compared to pictures of the actual plane.

slats and flaps not glued to the main wing yet:

cheers,

Werner

thanks for your comments!

lets start with the positiv:

cockpit:

main gear bay:

20161123_221048_1_zpsuuhzpbtq.jpg

but could somebody please explain me why Kinetic chose to have the ejector pin (marks) on the inside of all 4 parts of  the full length air intakes????

20161123_215452_1_zpsggwk6kqj.jpg

i would say this is visible and un-neccesary...

20161123_215735_1_zpsxum8o2z0.jpg

the not visible nicely hidden outside is flawless on the other hand ... :banghead: :

20161123_215605_1_zpswhnfa1te.jpg

after half an hour of sanding

I got a quite smooth surface, needs more attention though.

20161123_225617_1_zpsrwdakw3o.jpg

apart form that i have no idea on how to best build them....

the parts are molded in a way that they can only be glued after being inserted separately into the fuselage... :banghead: again

The instructions neglect to mention a rather important part for the Canon muzzle. They show part E41 inserted into the void with nothing to support it. Part F22 should go in from the inside to give E41 a place to sit.

Thanks!

I am mostly ignoring the instructions and build sequence for this build anyway... but,

I was wondering already which part to use for this or if I had to scratch something to fill the void ;)

@ Marco:

there is an engine face I will show next time, and there is some fait detail to be seen deep within the exhaust tube.... not sure if that is what you wanted to hear ....

Hi, after some time of leaving my AMX in resting, I am trying to move on....

Unfortunately spue numbers and desognation do not really fit with the actual sprue layout etc...

which part  would be F22? The most likely one unfortunately belongs behind the main canopy. Some exhaust ... cant find a part that would fit E41 within the part front fuselage....

Any picture anybody?

Would be great!

F22 looks like a lopsided funnel with a small hole in the bottom. Sprue F is the one which had the intake parts on it.

thanks Jessica!

found the part on my own sprue photos... go figure

IMG_7484_1_1_2_zpszmqdydxy.jpg

here it is, or better was....

I think I will scratch something .....

so many unnecessary duplicate parts, but of course I loose one from the single sprue ;)

a pre  Christmas update:

used a part from an Mi-24 targeting system to recreate my lost cannon recess ;)

IMG_4165_1_1_zpsfrnejnxv.jpg

IMG_4166_1_1_zpsvmhxoxod.jpg

he a bit crude inside, with nose weight and filed of landing gear bay....

IMG_4167_1_1_zpstptczvbd.jpg

I also mounted the  already painted,  a bit strange designed air intake parts, worked better than expected :)

IMG_4170_1_1_zpsqhvyu6qu.jpg

the alnding gear bay  white did not adhere well... another go ! - but the intakes look quite ok, (front not glued on yet !)

IMG_4171_1_1_zpsv9ji43qn.jpg

the large tanks and pylons:

quite innovative fin attachment which spares you any alignment issued! :):) well done Kinetic!!

IMG_4173_1_1_zpsxvgolwsg.jpg

not glued yet main components:

thanks for looking and comments!

happy Christmas,
