1/48 AFV Club Tiger 1 Ausf.E Early Version - Tiger 131 in Tunisia

Recommended Posts

Panzerkampfwagen VI, Tiger I (E), SdKfz 181 No.131 in Tunisia

Possibly one of the most famous Tiger 1s, 131 saw service in Tunisia where it was eventually captured by the British 48th Royal Tank Regiment during World War II. It is now at The Tank Museum in Bovington and is currently the only operating Tiger tank in the world.

This tank is the second completed model of a scene I am building for the MTO GB. The first photos were just taken on my chipboard table top with a desert scene propped up behind. I will eventually make a proper base. The kit was 'modified' from the base version to be more like 131 with the addition of a few bits and pieces here and there and the removal of some others. I have depicted the tank sometime in the days before it was captured. More details of the build can be found in my WIP thread - see below for details.

Kit: 1/48 AFV Club Tiger 1 Ausf.E Early Version

Paints: Humbrol, Revell and Citadel all applied by brush

Extras: Skybow Tiger 1 tracks, plus wire and plastic strip for the grab handle and step that were a feature on the front of the hull

The diorama I made in the the MTO GB which this tank forms part of can be found Here

Fantastic Tiger. How does it compare to the Tamiya kit regarding build ability? The AM tracks really add to the finished model. More nice work Stix. Cheers Greg ;)

Hi Greg and thank you. I think I actually prefer the AFV Club kit so far. The Tamiya kit has some quirks including the metal lower hull which is harder to work with than plastic. Also the tracks for the Tamiya kit look more complex to fit than the ones I have done before. The detail, especially the surface texture, is definitely better on the AFV Club version. I think the Tamiya kit will build into a nice version but perhaps not quite as good. Hope that helps.

Hi Jack and thank you very much. A big thank you too for pointing me in the direction of the information to help me make the kit version more accurate to 131.

Great job as always Stix.  Can you tell me at which stockists your magic hairy sticks will be available to purchase?

Rearguards,

Badder

Thank you very much Badder. The brushes tend to be available at some mystical model shops but I think I got my current ones from...........abracadabra..........Amazon!

They are this set: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Humbrol-No-3-Flat-Brush-Pack/dp/B0089W1M26/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478113316&sr=8-1&keywords=humbrol+flat+brushes

I have found them to be really good.

Kind regards,

Stix

Great work, that's a really good. I like the dry brushing, thats something effective!

Thank you very much for your kind comments. I think the dry-brushing is good with these 1/48 kits because the detail is quite finely done and enhances well.

Both are very nice, guess the Bovington tank museum is an awesome place, not only because of the museums Tiger.

Hi Bernd and thank you too for your very kind comments. I haven't been to Bovington.....yet! I was down in the area a few years back but it was before I was into making tank kits so I wasn't even aware of the tank museum. At some point I will definitely go and probably take thousands of photos!

Kind regards,

I have now managed to get the whole diorama project finished and the photos can be found Here.

I will add a couple to the first post but here's one showing Tiger 131 on the base:
