Realized recently that the Ideal kit is a Stranraer - a Matchbox kit of British flying boat with radial engines :)

A Matchbox kit of a British maritime patrol flying boat with radial engines - you could get it in four group builds!

Maybe you can enlighten me what's so special about Matchbox kits? Is it childhood memory, colourful plastic, Matchbox's famous panel lines... I am just a bit puzzled about the Matchbox cult.

Cheers, Peter

All of the above. It is difficult to understand, but as I started with them, the colours made them to not have to paint them and they fit very well. O, when I was ten I wasn't very interested in panellines. But the kits are in plans quite accurate.

Take a look here of what can be made of the old 70'matchbox kit.

And in the Gallery.

Cheers,

If my co-hosts @TonyTiger66 and @Rob G agree, I would propose the Flying Boats GB to start on July or later, so that the new toll Airfix Supermarine Walrus Mk.I in 1/48 gets a chance to be built.

Cheers

Jaime

Whatever, whenever. I'm easy (not cheap though.) Given that I live my own life and have no-one to answer to (except work and the taxman), I'll be available at any time. Although I do have one of them there Walrussies on pre-order at the Big H, so July or later would work for me.

How long has it been since you have built a Matchbox kit?

In these days of fancy kits made to satisfy those who check every detail it is nice to de-stress and go back to an earlier time when things were much less serious or obsessional.

Matchbox kits have certain qualities I enjoy.

1) They generally don't have any tiresome fit problems that take countless frustrating hours to sort out, so you can just get on with the fun bits

2) They have an interesting range of kits that include things like rarely seen German flying boats, the Wellesley, Heyford, Fairey Seafox and Helldiver biplane.

3) Box art and decal options.

4) Nostalgia. It is nice to revisit old kits, re-build the old childhood collection and build them to the standards you only dreamed of when aged about 12.

5) With a Matchbox kit it is left up to the builder how much trouble to put into a build. The kit builder could either choose to build straight out of the box or the skies the limit with mods, Matchbox kits are ideal to let you do either.

6) The challenge of seeing how good you can make your build look with just your own imagination and creativity. Without buying extra stuff the freedom is there to etch panel lines and carry out other odd jobs just with the help of scratch building and bits from the spares box.

7) Apart from the painting etc most modern kits look the same when built because the jobs I have mentioned have already been taken care of, robbing me of the enjoyment of doing them myself.

8) When you put trouble into a Matchbox build you get a one off, which you probably couldn't even repeat yourself.

And that is why a Matchbox group build is needed. People may not think they would enjoy building a Matchbox kit in this day and age but I bet they would thanks us for getting them to give it a go afterwards.

OK, thanks for trying. Of course nice models can be made from a Matchbox kit, but for many better kits are now available.

This is kind of my point. Why have a Matchbox GB if you can build a Matchbox kit in most GBs anyway.

I guess I missed the Matchbox magic as I grew up with Airfix kits :P

Ah, but the true question is why have other group builds when you can have a Matchbox group build?

Wow, thanks for taking the time to compile this listing.

I guess it depends how you look at things and what you want from a build. I had a go at several Matchbox kits in my youth and found them a rather frustrating experience as many (yes, there are exceptions and you listed some) have just a resemblance with the original.

I am building with Lego to relax as it is very creative - Have a look here Thinking about it, why not having a Lego GB - it is made of plastic and snaps together.

Because for all the hundreds of models Matchbox didn't make a kit

I think for myself mostly it would just be nice to see a big line up of Matchbox builds, also it would be nice for me to have my Matchbox builds compared and judged against other Matchbox builds rather than expensive new Tamiya and Hasegawa kits.

Fair enough, but it shows that time moved on - and not all new kits are expensive.

But hey, in case the Matchbox GB does make it for next year (and it looks positive right now). I will build my first Matchbox kit in 40 years. Have to buy one first as my stash is Matchbox free.

Just a quick reminder...

Tomorrow morning I will be accepting requests for STGBs for 2018.

If your STGB has reached the required threshold, send me a PM tomorrow.  The slots for 2018 will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.  However, if you have any specific dates in mind for your STGB, then let me know and we'll try and accommodate you.

There are eight STGBs for 2018, although the last one starts on 15 Dec 2018 and so runs until March 2019.   Once they're gone, they're gone!

I built one of those ages ago, from memory it was a lovely model to build!

Oh and I'll post the late chart tomorrow, from then on it'll be anyone's guess what will be the final standings..........well probably for the 9th position! I don't see any major changes occurring unless all those swapped out their WhatIf IV and Nightfigher GB votes suddenly get a bad case of the guilt's and correct the error of their ways! There's always plenty of room on the dark side!

cheers Pat

ps it's not too late to change your vote and rescue me :wicked:

Still puzzled by the very low interest in the SEA campaign GB. Considering the huge success of the MTO GB I was expecting this to excite a similar response. Guess that the men who fought in SEA really were the forgotten army...

It probably would have worked much better if it were to have been proposed as a general war against Japan group build.

I agree with you 100% on that! Gosh I know its really way too early to think about GB's for 2018, but as so often the case........

We have tried for a "Rising Sun/Japanese GB" (from memory) for 2016, that didn't make it, this year the SEA GB for 2017, again won't make it! So may be this time we have to think REALLY BIG!!!

I think once the voting is done and dusted for 2017 GB's I'll propose a "Pacific Conflict GB" to cover the main Pacific campaigns plus include the SEA campaigns as well. This would be a huge GB that would basically everyone to join in.

I won't go into the details here, but I have a few ideas how to make it work. So give me a couple of days to plot and plan it out and then look for the thread! If anyone else is REALLY interested then PM me and I'll discuss my ideas.

Ok with much ado we have come to the final** chart for this poll!!! :crying:............ and no more fighting Excel!!!!!  :yahoo:

......... and it is really interesting! We can see members have started abandoning a few of the bottom placed GB's to try a sure up those on the edge of the cutoff!! :fight:

The way members are chopping and changing their votes means none of the bottom half of the top 10 polling GB's are safe from elimination!!

Actually unless your favourite GB is one of the top 3 it may still miss out!! So who's it going to be???

Anyway here it is.......

2017%20GB%20Voting%2027-11_zps3mwbee7l.j

I'll save this chart ready for no doubt more fun and games that will be the 2018 GB Poll!! :wall: Seeya then! :waiting:

** I may have to sneak another one of these charts in if there are any significant changes...........which I bet there will be....

Thank you Rich!

Superb chart as always :thumbsup2: .

Around 45 minutes ago according to my clock.... :frantic:  :bounce: !!

It would be great to think that you could do the charts for 2018; they are a great help and make it lots of fun :) .

I'm with you on that sense of disappointment - I've got at least two builds that would have fitted into that GB.

Me three.

I was surprised and disappointed when it failed to make the cut last year. I'd made the mistake of buying three possible entries for it as well. I didn't make that mistake this year with any of the GBs (which is good as only one that I voted for is in the top 9).

Apropos of nothing: I'm not sure why the specialist subject section has disappeared (though I'm sure there's a solid reason for it) but it's properly nobbled the Sci-Fi builders this year (though I'll stop harping on about it now I think).

Toodles,

Paul

That works fine for me Rob and Jaime. I'm indoors most of the time these days and spend most of my time enjoying reading things on BM.

July is also winter for me so a great time for the GB to commence.

Looks like I might have to sneak a record breaking float plane in unless that GB can grab one more vote :o  :D !

All the best

Actually, it'd be quite spiffing if you could do the 2018 charts NOW. That would 1. Save us the effort of voting, 2. Let us know what kits to buy and 3. Allow us to plan our builds around all those other things that we are expected to do.

Think about it. It would be a Really Good Thing (tm).
