1/72 Academy P-51B Mustang

Since my P-40 is at the "wait-for-liquids-that-take-long-to-dry" stage, I got a good start on the Mustang.

Firstly though, here are the sprue shots.

Crap photo of clear parts, sorry.

The sprues look and feel good. Reminds me of Tamiya sprue.

I also got this little PE that came with my SMER P-51A kit - which I plan to be doing in this STGB too - and stole it for this kit which I will put extra effort into. I won't be using all of it, mainly interested in the seatbelts.

And a few hours later, the cockpit inside is finished.

I dry-brushed the IP. academy made it easy with a great IP.

Here you can see a bit of weathering

That's all for today, and happy with the start of this one.

Hi all,

I worked on the Mustang a little bit today, and closed the forward part of the fuselage.

Here are the sidewalls painted and weathered.

And with the cockpit base glued to the sidewall

Glued and taped to dry correctly.

This brings me to my first confusion, namely the gear bay paint color. I automatically assumed it would be interior green, but then I read this

" Similarly to other aircraft types, the camouflaged P-51 most probably had wheel wells painted in Neutral Grey. On later-production natural metal aircraft, the wheel wells were Interior Green."

Quoted form here

I'll post in the reference section too.

Cheers

Thanks everyone!

I only got a little bit done, with the P-40 getting most of my time this week.

Glued the tail halves together.

Left to dry, then glued it to the forward fuselage.

It too was left to dry, and in a moment of weakness I decided to remove the flaps... :blink2: I didn't realize how much work it entailed...

Update4_0171_zpsbdhz4ejn.jpg

I spent some time making some spare flaps from the Airfix P-51D kit to fit, then filled the wing panel lines,

This is going to take a while to dry, so I will do something other than modeling for a few hours.

Nice work so far Jimmy. I was also wondering about that separate tail I'm sure there must be a reason for it.

Thanks everyone!

I worked on the wings a little bit over the last few days.

Here it is after sanding smooth where I filled the panel lines

Then I sprayed it silver to show any imperfections. Probably overkill since the aircraft will be painted OD, but I had to touch up with surface primer 3 times before getting this result. Relevant panel lines all filled.

Then I glued the bottom wing half to the fuselage, and will leave it to dry.

That's all progress for now.

I have a small update tonight.

I've glued the canopy parts. I usually do it after the painting stage, but thought I'd to it before on this build.

Then I the bottom a few coats of white for the invasion stripes

And on top, as well as a first coat on the fuselage.

That's it for now.
