markjames68
Were EE Lightning overwing tanks just silver or grey? Does anyone have pics of them with camo on? Am including them in my build but would prefer camo on them as opposed to just one colour but obviously wont if that makes it wrong...
Darth Vader
When 904 went to bruntingthorpe it had green tanks, or was it grey. . or one of each.
Muzz
Can't find any images with camo tanks, they either seem to have been NMF, gloss light aircraft grey or dark sea grey. Murray
canberra kid
I've got photos of Dark Sea Grey, NMF and Medium Sea Grey? As yet I've not found one with dark green& dark sea grey but in the dark corners of my mind I thing I remember seeing one. John
markjames68
Thanks guys, keep digging, i would much rather have camo on the tanks!!
71chally
When the Lightning went into the Dark Sea Grey and Dark Green scheme the tanks were painted in Dark Sea Grey, this seems irrespective of the area on the wing it covered being in the grey or the green
Dave Fleming
Dark Sea Grey. They were rarely carried, as they were not combat capable. Only the Tornado F3 target aircraft carried them regularly.
tweeky
Dave that's not true. I worked on 5 Sqn (1980-1985) and we had overwings (overburgers as the were know) tanks fitted in 1984 for a few months.

Yes it would make it wrong if you camouflaged them. Overwing tanks were one colour overall. Which airframe are you doing?
canberra kid
It's looking very much like my memory of seeing camouflaged over wing tanks was a dream, I've searched through my photo's and I can't find any! The photo I have in mind is an F.6 over water taken from above but it may just be me miss remembering it. John
nickandrews7
Here's XR773 at Binbrook in early 1988 in what I think were either white or very light grey overburgers... and XR724 with the dark grey tanks... I have a copy of that same picture John, which I used for a college lecture on the type of all things! The tanks are DSG all over, but well faded and weathered
canberra kid
I've just found what I think is the one that fits the description, and you're right James DSG it is, still it's been nice looking through all the Lightning photos John
Jabba
I have found a picture of XS903 in Tim McLellands book on the Lightning on page 147, which shows the aircraft in early 1988 still in Green/Grey camo flying over the North Sea carrying overwing tanks which are Dk Grey in colour. Think you mean '904. If you look very carefully at the pic i posted above of XR724 you can just see '904 in the background as you describe it

The coding on the tail is BE and it carries the 11 Sqn tail markings but nothing on the nose.

'923 was definitely a grey/green camo bird and think she did have the tanks on at that time for a short period. Similarly pretty sure XR770 had tanks on after 5 folded for an equally short period, but she was definitely all over grey scheme.
