Hi guys.

 

Welcome me to the RFI of my Revell Stearman Kaydet 1/72 

 

It's been a while since this little bird was finished but I didn't have a spare moment in the sun to take the pics. I had to go to the docs today so I had a few hours to myself, I got some nice pictures taken in the garden with some nice autumn sun.

I scratched the office from plasticard.

re-built the prop

painted with Tamiy acrylics

and rigged with ez-line.

An excellent fun little build to bring the love back after the Mamoth prowler build.

And there we are.  I really enjoyed this build, the rigging seemed to go well giving me some confidence to do a bigger string bag I have in the stash.

I hope you all like the shots and thanks to everyone who helped along the way.

Hey. That yellow just looks superb in the sunlight doesn't it? Really vibrant. That's a cracking wee aircraft John. The shadows of the rigging in the eighth-shot from the bottom, just lovely the way they emphasise the detailing.

Yes your model is really beautiful!!!

I just had a little criticism about the panel lines; for me they are a bit overdone.

Two weeks ago, I went to an air meeting (Air show in Habsheim, Alsace, France).

They were two Boeing Stearman PT-17 (Kaydet).

I really can say that both aircraft were in a pristine state; you could not see any panel line or other structure details.

But your job is really great and I like it very much.

You're right. Every Stearman I see looks brand new. I wanted mine to look a bit used and a little bit dirty.

Great build of a favourite subject but I suspect that any line chief that allowed his charge to get as grubby as this would have received a rocket.

Not just restored ones. Check out the movie "Dive Bomber". Brilliant footage of pre-war contemporary aircraft including yellow trainers. All are absolutely pristine.

Nice build but I concur with others about the finish.

just looking at at some Kaydet pics. What the hell is with this plane? Does it have anti-dust paint or what? I can't find one pic without as much as a hair out of place.

im considering building a 1/72 man with a bucket and a sponge.

That would be because training establishments had lots of very cheap labour and were often run by disciplinarians who didn't like to see people idle. Of course one may have looked a little dirty at the end of an intensive flying period so your bucket man vignette is spot-on.

Hey thanks. 

what I have discovered is it's all in the preperation. You must drill holes where you want your trailing point to be. In most cases the wing and straight through. Then drill connecting points where you want the start point to be. (Just enough to get glue in) usually in the fuselage. When you're ready, "with the wings on" work from the closest to the fuselage out, dab some super glue in the first hole and with tweezers hold the ez line in place, it will hold fast in a few seconds. Leave it to dry, you can work on placing other lines while it dries. Once dry feed your line through the pre drilled hole and pull tight, not too much mind. I then dotted a little glue in the hole and held for about 30 seconds then let go. I was going to use weights to hold it in place but everything slipped off and it was held anyway.

then one at a time until your done. Use a brand fire new blade to trim the lines afterwards.

I really like what you've done with this Revell kit. It's a little beauty.

 

The Stearman Kaydet features in one of my favourite films, 'The English Patient'.

 

Here is a link to show the rather large model used in the crash scene. I had hoped, even post crash, it would look dirty.

A real aircraft also featured, but obviously they didn't want to crash that.

 

 

On the subject of dioramas, this all now has me pondering an AZ Tiger Moth and this Stearman from the stash, some sand (available nearby) and  1/72 figures of Fiennes and Scott-Thomas. Maybe a camel 🐫.

 

Would be fun

You would love building one. I can highly recommend it, although the Triplane I have looks like a better molding. Plus more wwiinnggss.

I happened to have just bought one of those. Couldn't resist a yellow biplane. Will definitely be using your rigging technique.

 I presume you've seen this well known picture of the original.

 

That has great diorama potential I think.

 

 

The kit itself is OK but I think the engine is a bit basic, particularly the lack of detail on the engine, the exhaust manifold particularly. But as it happens I found a picture on my phone which shows a close up of the engine on a Stearman which happens to be flown by a friend of mine. All the reference I need and on my own phone.
