Heinkel He111Z-1

Built HERE in 1/72 scale from Italeri's kit, here is WW2's best-known glider tug!

At some point during the development of Nazi Germany's heavy-lift gliders, the Messerschmitt Me321 Gigant and Junkers Ju322 Mammut, someone at the RLM must have said "What will we tow them with?"

After early experiments using multiple Messerschmitt Bf110s proved that idea to be suicidally dangerous, legend has it that Ernst Udet himself suggested the "Siamese Twin" arrangement which resulted in

the He111Z. It's hard to pin downproduction numbers for the Zwilling: different sources quote different figures of 10, 12 or 15. What is known is that 2 converted prototype aircraft flew, and were followed by

at least 3 "production" conversions, then folowed by at least 5 "new-build" He111Zs. The Zwilling flew better than expected (!) and could remain aloft on 2 engines, as long as the power delivery was symmetrical!

Operationally, the Zwilling's history includes a list of failures- the invasion of Malta, airborne assaults on Astrakhan and Baku, the relief by airlft of Stalingrad, but its moment of glory came in the Crimea at the Kuban

bridgehead, flying supply and casevac missions.

And that's it for my participation in the Great Patriotic War Group Build! Some superb models have been built, but this wasn't one of them! To all those who've already finished, well done and thanks for sharing with us all!

To those who haven't finished "Get a move on, you've only got till the weekend!"

Right, got to get on that FROG Westland Wyvern for the Best of British GB on that forum that's Mainly about Military modelling . . .

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6

Just flown from Insterburg to Utti, to be taken in service by the Finnish Air Force, but still wearing German markings

Pic taken 5/7/1944 can be found at the build thread

Academy Bf 109 G-14 kit, radiators cut open, AZ Model G-4...14 (how to say that?) wheels

Academy kit decals (****!), Kuivalainen/Eduard swastikas (great!)

Brush painted using Humbrol non-RLM code enamels (great!)

Thanks for the GB guys, it´s finally time to move on to hotter climate - The Mediterranean!

To me, the most important and joy bringing fact is that this Messerscmitt is definitely GREY, not GREEN! Regards, V-P

Finally, after several previous failed attempts, I have a satisfactory model of this aircraft - my thanks to those responsible for scheduling this GB, and also to those who've offered encouragement to keep me going!

Finnish Army BAB B armoured car

(captured Soviet BA-20)

Continuation War, Summer 1941

kit: HobbyBoss Soviet BA-20 Armoured Car Mod.1937

Decals: Star Decals 35-895 Finnish Tanks in WW2

figure: converted Alpine WSS crewman (35145) plus Hornet head

extras: DEF Models resin tires (for Tamiya GAZ car)

Some dimensional/shape corrections done to kit, explained in the WiP.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A variety of these lightly armoured cars were in use by the Finnish Army, exact number is not known, but at least 18 were on hand at the start of the Continuation War.  They appear to have been used mainly as liaison/dispatch and command vehicles.
