What CAR/BIKE kits have you recently bought 2?

I saw someone had built an old Beetle all beaten up in a book I'm about to review, and thought it looked like a rather nice kit, and when I found I could get it for less than £20 delivered, it was a done deal

Good Deal for a real nice kit.

I have 2 of this one in my stash,  bought both for also a nice price. There are so many styles to build a Beetle...🤫🤔...haven't decided which route to choose yet

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed a trader was selling over 20 made up 1/12 scale kits (mainly Tamiya) and I brought the Tamiya Porsche 910, 934, Lola T70, Ferrari 641 and a Protar Ferrari 312B2. I also picked up the Lotus 72 for someone else on this site. They were not glue bombs, but they will need a fair bit of restoration.

Back to Monte tyres, the Tamiya '93 winning Celica is on slicks too I think. Now really even if slicks were still technically legal at that time, it surely wasn't the most representative tyre for a winter event in Europe? It would be nice if kit manufacturers gave us the option. Yes, it would mean tooling up for another set of tyres but if the forthcoming Sierra is already £60, I'm guessing the market isn't critically price sensitive. Gives something for the aftermarket boys to go at I suppose.

No point asking me though, I'd be suggesting part worn secondhand Colways were a common rally tyre...

Slick tyres were used in Group A. There was a famous test when Lancia went back on the Monte stages to identify why they kept having punctures on a couple of stages and it turned out they were pulling the tyres off the rims on some corners!

Sometimes slicks were used on snow free stages, but they may have had studs fitted if the stages included ice, but those would not last long.

Lancia also performed mid stage tyre changes on the Monte  !

There are two different sets of tyres in my Belkits Mk1 Escort so it’s not beyond imagination for a manufacturer to give a choice!

I thought Coleways were remolds anyway?

If first part of stage was snow there was even option to add spikes in slicks. This was also legal option in one point. Idea was that spikes were helping on ice/snow and when dry tarmac started spikes were lost in some hundred meters and you had slicks for rest of stage.

...and 100 metres later you hit a patch of ice hiding in the shade under a tree...!! 🤣

@malpaso Colways were indeed remoulds. The first set that I bought (very cheaply) were very secondhand; plenty of M&S tread left but they'd been sat in someone's garden for at least 10 years old. There were only going on a completely standard Skoda Estelle but they were marginal even then...

Fresh Colways were quite good in deep mud but pretty rubbish everywhere else. Colway went under ages ago but around 15 years ago an outfit in Leicestershire started marketing Sportway tyres, which were much the same thing. Unless you were hugely poverty stricken you wouldn't have chosen those either, but there was a particular 1400cc championship where they were the nominated control tyre so for a while they had guaranteed sales.

Always remember, tyres are cheaper than bodywork. Saying that, not all remoulds are created equal; Maxsport RB3 Ultras are way better than they should be, at least in a 15.

This arrived today:

I plan to put the tires and wheels on the Cobra kit below. But at the rate I am building kits it probably won't happen before I retire in about 30 years. I hope this place is still around so you can see the result. ;)

Found the Ebbro kits at a very nice price compared to what they usually sell for look like real nice kits.

The Heller Mini was 50% off, I was always curious of the size of a 1:43 kit and it sure is small. I made a comparison to other Minis I have in the stash.

The guy I got the ligier off a couple of weeks ago sent me a list of some more kits he wanted to get rid of as he was reducing his stash (mainly aircraft)

But trolling through, I have managed to fill 4 more gaps in my F1 stash for under £40 per kit from him, they were delivered today and all still in as new condition with the bags still sealed

Well chuffed with the result :)

Really nice set. I have been looking FW-07 some time. I will convert it to Rosberg championship car.

Thanks

Ive been after the FW07 and the M23 for a while, they don't come up at the right price that often and although I want to get all the F1 collection eventually, I'm not going to pay what some people think they're worth. These 4 were £155 plus postage, but some people are putting single kits up for round that price (some higher as well)

Nice F1 1/20 kit acquisitions there Redstaff  and a good price at < 40£\ ea. I just completed the M23 and posted it in RFI - a total joy to paint & assemble. I’m working on the Ligier JS11 these days and hope to post it in the next few weeks. I would love to find a reasonably priced FW07 kit (eBay prices are nuts). I have found the best prices here in U.S. at model kit swap meets. Despite inflation, used scale model prices appear to be stabilizing here likely due to post-pandemic interests?

Thank you Redstaff! Your post may have brought me good luck I think! I found these two treasures at a kit collectors swap meet yesterday near Los Angeles:

The Williams was a steal at $20 USD, looks complete despite a few parts being separated from the runners. I’ve already built this Ebbro Lotus 72c (Jochen’s car) but this second one was too good to pass up at $40 USD. All the runners/ items are still in completely sealed bags and also included TWO sets of TABU design Gold Leaf cigarette sponsor decal sets. I’m thinking I might build this second 72C in my collection as Emo’s first F1 car.

Good find, well done

I like the Lotus, will get one at some point I'm sure

Cheers
