What CAR/BIKE kits have you recently bought 2?

@galaxyg I'm very interested in that Ferrari 612 Scagletti, I didn't know the 612 had been produced in kit form, but now I do and it's another one for my wish list.

They're not expensive either. Mine was higher because of the PE parts but I saw a blue one go on Ebay the other week for £15. Around £22 seems to be about normal.

I gather the fit of some parts is not great, from what I've read elsewhere. One thread titled something like "great car, lousy kit" for one.  However, I am sure I have built worse.

At first glance all bagged up but taken out of the box, it looks very well detailed.  Although typically Revell, the wheels look crap and will have to be changed. I'll do a WIP at some point during 2021.

Ooof, I want a Delta kit at some point.  One of the greats in both looks and performance.  Also on the classic rally list of mine are Escort Cosworth, 6R4, 99 Impreza, Celica etc :)  Some day when funds and stash space allow :(

I'll get one sooner or later too. But which? The slassic Sega Rally white and Martini livery... but then the green and orange Totip Repsol one looks great too. As does the 1993 1000 Lakes Giesse version due out from Hasegawa in May.  And that gold and black Esso one looks pretty smart.   Decisions Decisions.

Try direct from Japan: UK stockists seem to think they are not available but the above disproves that theory!

Have you ever used Plaza Japan and if so are they good to deal with?I just did what you mentioned and found some rarer kits at very good prices. No rush for delivery so those costs are good.

I have recently used plaza japan. Just be aware that you will need to pay parcelforce when they get into the country, 20% vat of the value plus £12 fees.

i ordered a bulk load so it worked out cheaper than shopping uk, plus they have a wide variety.

I use Boost Gear Model Shop (via a well-known auction site; they trade as "freestyle" - something or other): I think I was waiting for MFH to release the Porsche. but I added the Alfa to my order probably ten days ago and it was included with this lot! No customs, no extra charges, just very quick, efficient service. Meanwhile I'm waiting for decals I ordered from France nearly three weeks ago!

Thanks for that. They have some Hasegawa kits at half the price of over here so it may work out if I buy a few. Even with the add ons it shouldn't cost much as much. (Touch wood.)Snail mail will suffice as well. 👍

PLazaJapan sounds good and he prices certainly look good.  Has anyone here used 1999.co.jp to order kits? - with respect to how long/extra changes when arrive in UK?

I have. but quite a few years ago now. Service was very good, seem to recall airmail delivery was under 2 weeks and I didn't get hit for any extra charges back then. But even then it seems it was as it is now - some parcels get caught, others don't - I was working with another modeller at the time, and every one of his parcels from abroad got hit by customs!

Allow for 20% VAT on the order total (goods + shipping cost), plus customs clearance fees (£11 DHL, £12 Parcelforce).   DHL also have a sneaky "multi line" charge - if you have more than three different HS tariffs in your shipment, they charge extra for each additional one.  Fine if you only order one type of product e.g. multiple model kits, but if you were to add tools or parts, you might come a cropper.  I got clobbered with an extra £18 by DHL on a mixed parcel i.e. £29 handling charges, separate from the VAT.

If you only order one kit and it comes in the post, you might be lucky and not get charged; otherwise, best to allow for the above 20% + clearance fees, then you won't be unpleasantly surprised.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind. And the mixed content thing.   Even with all that, it may still be cheaper than the UK prices, not to mention earlier availability.

I ordered this earlier in the year and had almost given up hope. But wow was it worth the wait!

P1150182

It's an absolute gem and I'd say even better than the best; in terms of finesse and delicate moulding - dare I say it - I think it might even exceed the likes of MFH, Studio 27 and Alpha. The best comparison I'd make is that it's akin to an HPH aircraft kit but in car form. Can't wait to get into it but I shall in the meantime just spend a good amount of time admiring its jewel-like perfection.

Very, very highly recommended!

I'm glad you you've got yours and even more so that you like it.  However I assume we ordered them on the same day (the day I put up the post about it?) and I've still not got mine 😒

Yes I think so. However the post is mad at the minute so I guess that patience is the only solution. I'll post some in-box pics later.

OK here goes; lovely instruction booklet for a start:

P1150183

And some gorgeous resin bits, with detail you'd struggle to see!

P1150187

P1150189

PE for everything that needs it:

P1150193

P1150194

The body is quite a plain surface, but the underside is another awesome bit of detailing:

P1150197

And the tyres (spare wheel/tyre included, to go under the engine cover/grille area) are also exquisite:

Just an update of what arrived in the post the last month or so :)

I'm nearly finishing my first kit of the year, so the ratio is a bit one sided at the minute ;)

Hello model builders,

These two didn't exactly arrive today - they've been gradually arriving over the course of the last few months, buying parts here and there, so I can pretend the cost is a bit less! 😁  When I eventually get to a point that I can say my F1 projects are at a reasonable break point (and if I still like building models!), I'll start one of them.

The first is a 1/25 scale resin kit (AITM American Industrial Truck Models) of a Mack B75 tractor.  These trucks were built from the mid to late 50's into the mid 60's.  The shop set me up with the correct cab, and the appropriate chassis and so on, and service was prompt:

As you can see, this aught to be quite an interesting and challenging build!  Just for fun I've already done some rescribing of seam lines.  As I haven't built too many (any larger than 1/35) resin model truck kits, I can't say if the quality is particularly good or bad (comparatively).  You can see though, there will be more carving and clean up!  This is a curb side kit, so I'll only show the bottom of the engine.  I am glad to report I haven't seen any bubbles or irregular surfaces yet.  But I can see some fit issues - take a look at the tires and wheels, which I think will be easy enough to fix with thin styrene sheet - as for the tread pattern, looks like the need for some patience while carving.   All of that said, I am basing this build on a specific truck, which is not something that looks showroom fresh, so maybe some latitude in the build for a few rough fits and so on.  One last thing, no instructions - the good news is I've built a few kits, so I'm hoping I can figure out how this all works!

Next up, something of a hybrid (of kits, not mode of power!)  I will build either a Peterbilt 365 or 357 6x6, starting with a 378 cab.  To do this, I'll modify an Italeri 378 cab and engine (1/25/1/24), and use suspension and chassis parts from KFS (Kit Form Services), including the front drive axle, rear dual drives, and other bits and pieces etc:

I've used KFS parts before and can say they are excellent - which is good, because as you can see from above, I'm not starting with much of a traditional "kit"!  You can also gather, this will involve plenty of cutting and scratch work.

So, hopefully before too long, one of these will make their way to the workbench!

Cheers

Nick
