What CAR/BIKE kits have you recently bought 2?

OK, so I'm very excited by this.  A bit of background, I love Impreza's.  I had one about 8 years ago, it was 2000 plate facelift mk1, non turbo (I couldn't afford to run a turbo version back then) but it had the full turbo body kit (bonnet, front and rear bumpers, massive wing on the boot), full stainless exhaust and racing air filter.  It was loud AF but everyone loved it, even the wife.  It was amazing to drive, especially in the wet.  It gave me no mechanical trouble for the 3 years I had it, not bad for 100k on the clock.  But eventually I had to get rid as the family grew a second time.

I've always favoured the 2005 Hawkeye model as the best one, and dream of owning a turbo version.  With the right budget I had a plan in mind what colour I'd spray it (I like to be different), and what things I'd do to it to make it mine.

Decided I'd buy a model kit instead, and do it as I would my real life one.  Turns out, of all the version of the Impreza, the Hawkeye has been rare.  All model shops online that listed it never had stock.  One or two would pop up on Ebay every so often from Japan, usualy £70+, with the risk of import duty etc.

Finally a few weeks ago I stumbled across one on Ebay at £36 including shipping from Japan.  Took a chance on it, and it arrived, costing me only an extra £3.50 in duty.

I'm bouncing of the walls with excitement, and I have several detail up bit either here or in transit.  Racing style rear wing, detail up kit, 6 spoke 18" wheels, and these.

Air valves for the alloys, 5p coin for scale.  There's only 5, so I can only lose 1 😬.  I'm going all out to make this a close to what I imagined when I day dream about buying a real one.

Also, if anyone can help I have this in the wanted section, I need a scan of the decal sheet from an Impreza rally car.  I need to be able to print it out multiple times to use as a stencil for painting, hence why I need the scan rather than buy an actual decal sheet set.

Hope you haven't fallen as sleep at my waffling, but I'm ready for this.  Just need all the parts to arrive, and to source or mix up the relevant colour I have in mind :)

The Bel Air is one of my favorite cars and I have wanted the 1:12 version for a long time. Doesn't look to be much more detailed than a 1:25 version though but I can always add more myself.

I am also a big Mustang fan and have had my eyes on this one for a while. I believe it is an old Renwal kit so the accuracy is probably not the best but not many big scale Mustangs out there.

This one I bought because it was very cheap, I already have one in the stash.

Nice selection, though I'm not a massive fan of the new Beetle.  That Chevy would look great either stock, or as a custom hot rod, beautiful car.

I have another Mustang in mind for the GB, need something that I have a reasonable chance of finishing in time. I am the slowest builder in the world.

I was browsing eBay and found this at a reasonable (I thought) buy it now price, so I snapped it up.

I was a bit nervous because the box art is not a GTB/4 but an earlier, "short nose" two-cam car.  I could also see that some parts were off the sprues, but the pictures suggested that everything was still there (confirmed when I checked the box).  This one will probably be silver with black leather, it certainly won't be red.

I think that's a rebox of the old Italeri kit.  Not a bad kit, but let down a bit by the wheels and tyres.  I felt the stance was a bit off too, but hadn't got far enough to think about correcting it.  Mine is languishing in the loft, alongside the Maserati...

I didn't think the wheels looked too bad, although they'll need to be stripped and repainted, I'd have preferred the simple alloys that were standard on these cars but the kit doesn't give you that option and I doubt there's an aftermarket alternative.  Not sure about the stance, I guess I'll find out when I come to build it.

I was relieved to see that the lower part of the nose and the tail panel, which are moulded separately, can be attached to the main body before the body goes on the chassis; so no worries about visible join lines at least.

From my experience with both this one and the cabriolet, you’ll want to reinforce that tail panel joint. I used micro beads and superglue from the inside, but Milliput or two part epoxy would probably work, too. The joining area of the seam as is is pretty limited, and it has a tendency to pop when you manipulate the body without some additional strength...

best,

M.

I had a Fujimi Enthusiast Daytona at the same time.   The Fujimi wheels and tyres were much better and probably soured me on the Italeri parts, which IIRC looked a bit clunky in comparison.

Thanks for the tip.

I'm just watching a Fujimi Enthusiast Daytona at the moment, so that may join my collection and it'll be interesting to see how the kits compare.

Hi. There is a set of the Campagnolo alu wheels for the 275 GTB here:

I didn't win the Daytona but...

I stuck a modest bid on this kit in the last few seconds, expecting to do nothing more than push up the price for the winning bidder.  Imagine my surprise when my bid was the highest, but still less than the maximum bid I placed (I think I put £25 and won it for £22).  I wanted the "full-fat" version of the Dino kit after seeing one built up on here earlier this year; I wasn't sure if this was that kit or the more basic one, which I'd have been happy with for the price.  You can probably tell that I'm delighted.  I'm thinking maybe metallic blue or green for this one with tan seats.

I've been hankering for one of those for a while, but when I was looking they were going for silly money.    Fujimi kits confuse me as well, so that makes me wary - I know Enthusiast kits have engines, but I'm not au fait with all the other variants and reissues.

I’ve gone a bit overboard on adding to the stash recently.  These were all reasonably priced.

I’m pleased to get hold of the Morgan.  I know that the two Loti are due for rerelease but these ones were good prices and the extra parts added for the new kits are a bit underwhelming.

I look forward to starting one of these once I finish the Rothmans Escort that’s on my workbench at the moment.

Cheers

Will

I have this kit but a different reissue, looks like a very nice kit. Mine has all the body pieces molded red. I got it pretty cheap the body was painted by the previous owner but it was easy to strip the paint.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally got my hands on a kit I've been after for a while.

y4mVMYEtlEjkHE8AdRh1LxmNVH_fpyWi4pPHdTzO

The Tamiya Jaguar Mk.II for a fairly reasonable price, although there's a catch (of which I was aware).

y4mEGWIJKte8TeB2nVhaQt5uir1GI7nFRaOdv8vw

Part started, the body has been painted and rubbed down, hopefully a bath in bleach will fix that, and the engine has been assembled and partially painted; I'm sure that's not insurmountable.

Still a good one to get your hands on - that's one I hope Tamiya will rerelease now that the Loti are on the way.

As for me, a bit of a stars aligning for this one which was sitting around #5 in the want list. But the Mustang Group Build came along just after starting the XJ220 freed up a space in the stash, then Amazon had this one reduced in their warehouse:

It'll be done in the black-and-gold livery on the box to go with the 2006 version I did which was the first car I did on returning to the hobby.

Ahh, you beat me to it.  Did you win the same vendors racing version which went for the same price 4 minutes later?  It seemed an immaculate kit and had far less interest, which I didn't understand as it's the same kit plus racing bits and decals!

In actual fact , the racing version has some differences - it's not just the standard kit with some extra parts.  The main difference is the bumpers , since the racing one has no over-riders and has locating holes on the drivers side for the number plate . It has the triple Webers , but I can't recall if you still get the twin Sun's.  It also has the Coombs style rear arch flares rather than the standard spats . I'm sure there are other differences too , but can't remember off the top of my head
