dadgaddad
Here's one side after a bit of touching up And here's the other. This side still needs a bit more work although as usual the camera makes everything look much worse than it really is. I might end up masking the stripes and respraying the fuselage.
The Spadgent
Looks heaps better after a bit of fetteling. a touch of weathering and you'll never notice any imperfections. excellent work. Learning as you go is the best way. Bravo sir. John.
dadgaddad
No photos to show at present but I have continued to work on the stripes to improve their appearance and I think I'm happy with them now. The white stripes on the fuselage and lower wing were all repainted with a brush to even out the colour. The leading edges on the wing also had the white filled in which made them look much better. The fuselage stripes were remasked and the tail repainted to cover the overspray while the fuselage and upper wings got another coat just to fill the colour out a bit. I'll get the masking off later and get some pictures up.
JosephLalor
This is on the way to looking very good. Given the very nice extra work that's been done, I surmise that it qualifies as Out of the box by dint of it being built on a cutting mat rather than in the box!

dadgaddad
The last time I used Xtradecals on a build I had endless trouble with them but either these ones are much better or I was ready for their nonsense because they went on without any trouble at all. I used Clear on the first one but the others were done with just water. There is still some stencilling to apply but the main markings are on and it only took a few minutes which is good because this is a quick, OOB build. The prop isn't fixed on yet. dadgaddad
That's all the stencils on the underneath done. The decals are from the kit and again they went on quickly and easily with no setting solution required.
dadgaddad
I gave the underside decals a coat of clear to protect them and left them to dry. Then I started the upper stencils. All went on quickly which is good because, well you know by now, I'm sure. The walkway stencils are supplied in one piece for each side. I briefly considered cutting them into two for ease of application but they went on really easily. You may notice a slight gap in one side. The decals are printed very closely and I accidently nicked it as I was removing another decal from the sheet. Oh well, look out for a paint chip or mud spot or some other fix. The view from above. Starboard fuselage and tail. Edited October 22, 2016 by dadgaddad
dadgaddad
Now to leave this to dry for a while before applying more Clear. Edited October 22, 2016 by dadgaddad

dadgaddad
I haven't been able to get to the bench much over the last few days but while looking at some pictures of this Mk IX I did notice something I need to make. Fortunately it should be fairly quick and easy to do. It starts with this. Any ideas as to what it might be?

dadgaddad
Trimmed to length and given first coat of white it's, yes, you guessed correctly, a “Rebecca” Beam-approach aerial! Edited October 24, 2016 by dadgaddad

dadgaddad
It has been a busy last few days so I haven't been able to post any pictures but I have managed to sneak a minute or two here and there to spend on this build. Firstly, a heavily thinned Burnt Umber oil wash was applied to dirty things up a bit. Once dry (ish) it was cleaned up with cotton buds and little bits of paper towel. Then a darker oil wash was applied around the engine panels using Burnt Umber mixed with a touch of Black. When this was mostly dry I cleaned it up and then used a wide soft brush to spread the colour lightly and evenly around to give a slightly grubby, oily effect. The underneath was treated to a heavier wash which was again spread around with the brush and finally some oil streaks were added using a small brush. dadgaddad
Work commitments have contributed to the lack of progress recently but the main culprit has been the gunsight. The original plan was simply to use the piece from the kit and modify it to fit but on inspection the kit gunsight glass was broken so I had a look in the spares box but there was nothing suitable. Plan B was to cut down the kit part and glue on a piece of clear plastic sheet cut to size. That didn't work either. The main problem was that each time I made a new glass it would disappear, often in front of my eyes. I must have made a dozen of the little blighters! Anyway, in the end I took a piece of sprue and cut it it down to the right size and shape. This was glued in place and left to dry. Once this was done I made yet another glass and with much swearing and fiddling about I managed to get it to stay in place. With this done all that is left is to give it a couple of coats of Mattcote, attach the fuel tank, canopy and propellor and call it done. TonyTiger66
Unfortunately I'm out of 'likes', but I like very much! It's amazing how, in the right hands a quick, OOB build can look like a really carefully approached, extremely detailed advanced build. Fancy the manufacturers showing you how to make the Rebecca beam approach aerial like that ! I have a quick question. I'm no Spitfire expert; what is the history/are the events that led to the faded main lower wing 'D-day stripes'? I haven't seen them like this before and I'm very interested. The Spadgent
Lovely work on that gunsight. I know exactly what you mean about the clear bit, my bullet proof glass vanished about 3 times. looking forward to seeing those little bits n bobs on. john.
Beard
That's looking lovely, some nice oil-staining on the underside... Merlins leaked a lot and not many modellers (myself included) represent the sheer amount of oil that got on the airframe. I know exactly what you mean about making gunsights, having once spent ages shaping some clear plastic for one of the early round gunsight glasses only for it to disappear before my very eyes.

All the best TonyT there was nothing about this build that was carefully approached. It was definately made up as I went along. As far as I'm aware, the invasion stripes weren't kept for long after D-Day and were soon washed off or painted over. Here she is, everyone. A quick teaser while I look for anything else that needs doing before I put on the propellor and call her finished. Thank you all for coming on this little adventure with me and thanks for all of your comments. Edited November 7, 2016 by dadgaddad
