caterhamnut
Hey guys - I want to try using oils for weathering washes.Any tips?Doesn't the oil take an age to dry?Do you just use 'standard' oil paint from the tubes?Thinners?
Jusjay
I'm certainly no expert but have been reading up recently with a view to doing it myself. Get some artist quality oil paint in tubes rather than student versions I believe the pigments are better in artist quality. You can thin with white spirit but it might be a better quality one that works best. The oils do take a while to dry but that's a good thing in a way, as it gives you loads of playing around time. I would say, remember to squeeze a small amount out onto a bit of card and let the oil seep out first before using though.
Andy Moore
As Jusjay mentioned, the better the quality of the paint, the better results you'll get. The Abt. 502 oils are very good, and come in modeller friendly colours. You can use white spirit or enamel thinner for thinning, and you can get quick dry thinners too. I generally use a piece of cardboard as a palette, which soaks up some of the linseed oil in the paint. Doing that will make the paints dry faster.
