In an attempt to meet the Macchi scourge over the desert skies of this Group Build, I will attempt to add to Basilisk's Kittyhawk contingent.

The plan is to build a couple of James "Eddie" Edwards' Kittyhawks:

Kittyhawk IA, FZ-R, of 94 Sqn using the AZ/Legato kit

Kittyhawk II (short-tail P-40F), HS-O, of 260 Sqn using the Hasegawa kit and a DB Production resin Merlin nose.

The title of the thread is borrowed (stolen) from Procopius' epic Desert Anvils thread.

Thanks vppelt68 and thepureness for hosting this one, and thanks Enzo for your oversight of the general BM Group Build goodness.

I will look forward seeing them getting build - can't have too many P-40s

You can't possibly do a worse job at these than I did, so I think I'll follow along.

Talking about your epic build in the P-40 GB from last year, what happened to all the pictures - they are all gone :weep:

Any possibility to get them back as I would love to have a look at your builds.

Cheers, Peter

Ah, well. I was very lazy and used Facebook to host my photos, because Photobucket is hot garbage. Facebook image URLs aren't static, so can "decay" over time, meaning the link will break. Here they are again, for a limited time only:

I still can't believe you did that PC, epic for sure.

Mistakes were made. I only attempted it because you made building the kits look easy. Little did I know...

I would like to take a seat at the back Cookie. I tried the AZ kit but failed miserably with the exhaust stacks. It seems they should be put in before the fuselage is closed up :dunce:.

They ended up looking like a wonky moustache .

I love P 40's. Especially interested in those at the improvised beach airstrip at Cutella during the MTO. It's not an Italian name ;)

Fascinating link Tony, thanks for that. Makes me want to start a 3 Sqn collection - maybe for the ANZAC GB. I'm also partial to 75 Sqn after reading about their defense of New Guinea in 1942.

The AZ/Legato P-40 kit is kind of a pain, so no loss of honour there, but I think it looks like a P-40 when complete - see PC's above (it's one of the eight!).

I still have it in the Drawer of Doom Cookie. It's actually a really nice model kit once cleaned up (thoroughly - though that leading edge/gun join...difficult ). It really captures the look of a P-40 and has a nice interior OOB. I just really messed up on the exhausts, then ripped them out damaging it a bit. :(

I'm still considering trying to rescue it with some resin ones, but only seem able to find resin P40 M/N ones, do you know if any are available for E's?

PC's build is just unreal :o! A mini Curtiss factory!

Really looking forward to your models.

Best regards

Tony

  • 1 month later...

I apologize for the lack of progress on these folks, but they're finally started.

First things first, the mighty Procopius traveled to New Mexico last month for PhanCon and brought me this gift:

IMG_3912_zpsbvwahm8z.jpg

But wait, it gets better:

IMG_3913_zpsae5aitak.jpg

Signed by the man himself! I still can't believe it, thank you, PC.

With fear and trepidation, I began:

IMG_3914_zps8szwoegx.jpg

The nose had to come off the Hasegawa kit in order to fit the resin Merlin to convert it to a Kittyhawk II.

I superglued some plasticard guides onto the resin nose to help align the final fit.

IMG_3916_zpstbneamae.jpg

All together, with a nasty quadruple seam.

IMG_3918_zpsm2kwt6rk.jpg

A first pass at cleanup.

IMG_3920_zpsmlxzzh0m.jpg

The resin nose isn't on exactly straight, but it's the best I could do, besides, it wouldn't be a Cookie build if everything were square. After some crude tests, I think the Cg is still far enough back so that it will be a tail sitter - the solid resin nose is heavy.

Thanks to Basilisk's (Peter) AZ/Legato build, I was able to get the radiator housing together with a spacer.

IMG_3923_zpsxwuzq8wr.jpg

The wing roots will require a lot of putty and sanding, but the fit is better than my previous attempt at the Legato kit, and it turned out OK after a little work.

What an inspiring book, amazing gift :thumbsup2: .

The models are coming along very well. Brave rhinoplasty on the Hasegawa :o !

I just wanted to say :thanks:  for the link to the CMK P-40E exhausts.

Three sets will be purchased next week and two models rescued from the Drawer of Doom.

The clean up on the Legato is very neat.

:goodjob:

The resin nose looks good to me, Cookie! I'm almost more impressed by the radiator for the AZ kit, you managed to make it look good, which I thought was impossible.
