chalked on aircraft code letters

Found this,

it mentions chalked on aircraft code letters used by 1435 flt malta,

curiousity getting me presumably this would mean the code letters were white ?

or maybe 'whiteish'

I know some aircraft had chalked on presentation markings ( defiants,whirwind, etc)

the practice might explain some of the odd code letters we see in photos
