1/72nd Airfix Beaufighter built as a USAAF NF.VIf of the 416th Night Fighter Squadron, USAAF

This Beaufighter, KV912, was one of many provided to the USAAF under `Reverse Lend Lease'  and was named `Fluff' with each of the engines named `Amby' and `Patsy'. Painted in the standard British night fighter scheme of Medium Sea Grey and Dark Green, the RAF markings were painted over and replaced by American stars and bars. The Brick Red painted areas represent the doped fabric seals often applied around here and the tail and on many Beau`s including the real subject aeroplane the red shrinking dope was applied quite scruffily without painting a camouflage colour over the top.;

Here is my second entry into this GB

Airfix 1/72 Douglas SBD 5 Dauntless painted in the colours of the French Fighter group (Groupe de Chasse)

This kit is old. 1965 to be exact. The parts had loads of flash, sometimes in difficult locations to remove. It also had mostly raised rivet detail - which to my surprise is very good. The fit also to my surprise is also very good. There is filler required between the fuselage and the front part (covering the engine) to make it all look like one piece. Painting was not too difficult as it was a simple two tone scheme with no camo. The decals on this kit are phenomenal, they really make an average kit turn out to be very nice in my opinion. The canopy was painted using acrylics and kept separate from the rest of the kit, it was not matte coated as I painted it in separate steps and not one go so didnt really want to mask it off correctly and matte coat it, so I left that. It does look a little shinier than the kit itself, but I am happy with it.

The kit was painted with Tamiya enamles and Humbrol enamels. All in all another fun and very satisfying build.

Curtis Kittyhawk Ia, 4 squadron SAAF

Here's my attempt at the Sword Kittyhawk (short-tail). Painted with a bush, using Humbrol and Sovereign Hobbies enamels with a Windsor & Newton matt coat.

I managed to lose on of the the rear canopy bits, only finding it as I was taking the finished kit to be photographed.

Ok, here's my contribution. A few errors during the build and not 100% happy with the paint job since the airbrush was a bit dirty and didn't come out smooth. It was definitely rushed but today was my last day of modelling this year and wanted to do one WW2 build as all the others were moderns. Where's the other 109s?!?! :)

EDIT: Forgot to mention, this is the AZ Models Bf 109G-6/Trop built entirely OOB

Btw, lost the pitot tube piece, but due to time constraints did not scratchbuild a new one

My fourth completion for this Group Build - and sadly the last as I could have built a few others given the time - an Airfix Beaufighter representing T4843 WRoX of 248 Squadron based on Malta and flown by Australian Sgt Ron Hammond to provide long-range air cover for the convoy Pedastal on 21 August 1942. Sgt Hammond claimed a Ju88 probable and a Fiat BR.20 destroyed which is depicted here. Ron Hammond claimed six victories in all and was killed flying a Beaufighter in combat with FW-190s off the French coast in December 1942. Beaufighter T4843 was shot down by flak near Trondheim on 28 April 1943 (information from the Osprey Aircraft of the Aces book).

As noted above this is the lovely Airfix kit with the excellent Alley Cat early Beaufighter conversion set used. Paints used were Phoenix Precision Paints and the transfers were from the DK Decals set - build thread is here.

Cheers,

Stew

Battalion HQ radio Command tank

Libya, Summer 1940

31633132201_5a1f6ab8f0_b.jpg

Approximately 324 of these tankettes were available to the Italian Army at the beginning of hostilities in North Africa.  Only HQ vehicles, though, would receive radio equipment.  The loop antenna was the initial type, but would eventually be replaced by the standard vertical antenna, along with improved radios.

31602399062_fc5474e114_b.jpg

This 1/35 scale kit is one of Bronco's initial releases in the Italian tankette series, and was converted/upgraded to a radio version with a Brach Models resin kit.  There were a few things scratch built, but most importantly the radio box inside the crew compartment.

WiP can be found here:

V - Viking no 12 squadron SAAF, based in Italy.

The kit is 1/72 airfix offering and transfers are the med twins set from Xtradecals, big thank you to Tony O'toole for helping with making these as stated on the sheet and for pointing them out when I asked for help. The kit is old with raised panel lines, however they are crisp and we'll detailed, the interior detail is staggering in comparison to just about every other airfix kit of this vintage! Really enjoyed the build and would recommend this kit.

Paints are tamiya, OD  was a number of shades mixed by ones self and the underside was royal grey.... I would in hindsight say the OD is a little to dark.

Weathering using micromesh to fade paint between coats and pastels....

Here she is! You can find her build thread with "med twins x3" just need to finish the other two!

Royal Hellenic Air Force Henschel Hs 126. The intent was to produce a tired-looking aircraft. The RHAF fought with ferocious bravery to the very bitter end and their aircraft reflected this.

This is the Italeri 1/72 scale kit, with a scratchbuilt cockpit and observer's machine gun. The decals are leftovers from my Azur PZL P.24, numbers from the spares file and sigmas produced using home-made masks. I lost a cabane strut and had to make up a new one from copper rod.

Spitfire Vc, 4 Squadron SAAF

Using the spare parts from the Sword Seafire III, I had a go at this aircraft:

Spit%20MkVC%20KJ-Z%205%20Sqn%20SAAF%2020

There's some discussion as to what colours it's painted but I went with Tony O'T's opinion.

As ever, it's brush-painted using Humbrol and Colourcoats Enamels.
